"I hav never photographed a perfect face." said Rlchee, when interviewed at his photographic gallery in the Paramount studios.

"And frankly." ha said, "if one cam along, I would be out of a Jbb. "Beauty, or perfection of feature, If you please, Is a peculiar. Intangible thing. What It really is, or what constitutes beauty, I'm sure no one knows. "In Judging beauty, one 1 swayed by personality.

And that la what counts. "It Is Impossible for me truthfully to select the most perfect face among the girl whom I have photographed. "If I were asked to nam the actress with the most perfect face, my selection would be a combination of several. II They are getting ready for the annual spring housecleaning In the studios, one of the truly hopeless, tasks or Hollywood. Spring house-cleaning puts the prop man In the role of grand-mother cleaning out her attic. Like grandma, who finds a sentimental reason for saving almost everything, the property man finishes by rearranging everything and throwing away nothing. It is this kindred spirit, shared by grandmothers and prop men, that makes the house-cleaning task hopelefcs. They have to keep adding storage space.

So the net result of the spring siege is simply that various articles, broken or worn, are transferred from the "new props" attic to the "old props" department Values are relative in both places, intrinsic worth of an article having nothing to do with its usefulness in the making of a picture. Many of the "old props" rooms had their start about 15 years ago when New York skyscrapers moved in upon fashionable homes and replaced them on the landscape. Hollywood sent its buyers to the auctions of furniture, and many fine pieces came back to be stored away. All of them came into use time and time again in Hollywood's "Gay Nineties" cycle of films, begun by Mae West and currently persisting in "Sweet Adeline." Wherever there was a building boom, or an epidemic of home modernization in wealthy colonies, Hollywood's scouts flocked to pick up what they could. So the "attics" increased, and so they will Increase until some Inventor finds a cheaper, easier way to furnish movie sets, or until movies give way entirely to new forms ot entertainment.

Hard usage on sets soon relegates furniture from the "new props" to the "old props" attlo. Another factor rapid changes in furniture tyle-s-hasten the process. Furniture styles havs changed more in the last three years, one property head comments, than in any like period since aims began unreeling. Studio mills turn out new furniture constantly, and many new pieces are bought. But items that were "ultra-modern a lew years ago have become dated already, and hence are on their way to the "period" classification If not definitely to the- "old props" sections, where they would go anyway as toon as they become scuffed or scarred In use.
