Sunday, October 19, 1986 Press Sun-Bulletin 3D 5 Cornell dominates Brown. i i. 'l! 3 stays perfect in Ivy League Cornell held a 7-3 lead after the first period on Mitchell's TD reception. The 6-2 tight end, who alternates with Tom Malone, set up Cornell's second touchdown in the second quarter with a 33-yard catch and run that put the Big Red at the 1-yard-line. Johnson scored two plays later for a 14-3 lead.

In the fourth period, Mitchell's reception converted a fake field-goal attempt from the 13 on fourth-and-2 into a. first-and-goal at the 3. Two plays later Johnson boosted the Big Red lead to 27-3 with his second TD, but kicker Tom Aug missed the conversion. Mitchell played primarily on special teams until recent weeks, contributing the heads-up fair-catch signal on an onside kick at Colgate that was a key play in that game. Cornell opened the game with a fumble on its fifth play from scrimmage but Brown, which was limited to just 99 yards total offense in the first half, was unable to take Brown was very much in the game in the third quarter, when it began asserting itself on offense on its second series.

Quarterback Mark Donovan moved the Bruins from their own 19 to the Cornell 22. But on a second-and-6 from the 22, Donovan dropped back to pass and was hit by tackle Gary Rinkus. Donovan tried to throw the ball away but instead tossed it to Frontero, who ran 74 yards unimpeded for a touchdown that put the Big Red up, 21-3. "The interception was the turning point," Cornell coach Maxie Baugnan said. Stallone completed 12 of 18 passes for 153 yards.

Mitchell accounted for 91 of those yards on five receptions as for a second straight week Stallone has concentrated on his tight ends, with defenses sagging back on Cornell wide receivers. Brown outgained the Big Red in total offense, 315 to 282, running 75 plays to Cornell's 57. From staff and wi re reports ITHACA For the first time in 15 years, Cornell is 3-0 in the Ivy League football standings. The Big Red's convincing 27-9 victory over Brown yesterday moved Cornell into a tie for the Ivy lead with Penn, which posted a 30-26 non-league victory at Navy. Cornell tight end Stuart Mitchell caught a 22-yard touchdown pass and set up two other scores by fullback Jeff Johnson.

Cornerback Jim Frontero added a 74-yard interception return for a touchdown as Cornell beat the Bruins for only the second time in the last 14 meetings. The last time Cornell was 3-0 in the league was in 1971, Ail-American Ed Marinaro's record-breaking senior season. The only other time a Big Red team has reached 3-0 since the round-robin schedule began in 1956 was in 1958. Cornell, 4-1 with a non-league loss at Lafayette, visits Dartmouth Saturday with league games against Yale Nov; 8 in Ithaca, at Columbia on Nov. 15 and against Penn in the Nov.

22 home finale. That game could be for the undisputed Ivy crown that has always eluded Cornell. The Big Red shared the crown just once, in 1971, with Dartmouth, which had derailed the Marinaro express. Brown, pre-season Ivy co-favorite with defending champion Penn, dropped to 2-2 in the League and 3-2 overall. A 'AWL' .......1.: ..,,1 'n Bombers win by one point From staff and wire reports BUFFALO Ithaca safety Jim Garrity broke up a 2-point conversion pass attempt with 1:04 to play yesterday to preserve the Bombers' 22-21 victory over the the state University Center at Buffalo in a battle of nationally ranked Division III football teams.

Ithaca, 5-0 and ranked No. 4, snapped a 15-15 tie with 6:47 remaining in the game on a 3-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback Mike Middaugh. Freshman Joe Johnston kicked the extra point. Buffalo, 5-2 and ranked 15th, then drove 75 yards for a touchdown. Workhorse junior tailback O.D.

Underwood capped the drive with a 1-yard run, his third touchdown of the game, with the big play a fourth-and-10 pass play for a first down at the 15. But on the key conversion attempt, Ken Crosta's rushed play-action pass intended for split end Mark Schmidt ran into double coverage and was deflected by Garrity. Underwood, who carried a school-record 41 times for 182 yards, and Crosta both are juniors who transferred to their native Erie County after limited use at Kent State and Ithaca, respectively. Ithaca hasn't lost by a one-point margin in 10 years, but yesterday's finish was almost as scary as last November's 13-12 Div. Ill playoff victory over Union.

Buffalo, which had won five straight since an opening-day loss to Towson State, a highly-ranked Div. II team, also was stopped on a fourth-and-inches play at the Ithaca 9 just before halftime. Ithaca (5-0) scored on its first two possessions on a 6-yard TD pass from Middaugh to split end Charley Pope and a 55-yard scoring run by Mike Scott one play after an Underwood fumble. Johnston's 42-yard field goal, the first tried by Ithaca this season, made it 15-0, but Buffalo tied the game in the third quarter. Though leading IC receiver George Mack, a senior from Bing-hamton, was held without a touchdown, he caught six passes for 87 yards.

That made him No. 2 on the Bombers' career-reception list, and puts him within 10 yards of the career receiving-yardage record. if OCTOBER SALE AP PHOTO mm. The wheels continued to spin for winless Colgate's defense yesterday, as Bucknell overcame a 19-point halftime deficit for a 40-39 Colonial League football victory. Bucknell quarterback Jim Givens' 62nd pass of the day was a 5-yard touchdown completion to wide receiver Mike Morrow with 52 seconds remaining. Steve Bari-mo then kicked the winning extra point. Colgate's last gasp was a 44-yard field goal attempt, but a fumbled snap forced holder Mark Hulbert to instead pass and receiver Jeff Crowell was tackled on the Bucknell 9-yard line as time ran out.

Colgate's six losses include a 41-39 setback at Lehigh and wasted 14-0 leads at William Mary and Yale, which ended in 42-21 and 28-23 defeats, respectively. Givens' 62 passes and 36 completions, both Bucknell records, accounted for 350 yards. He drove the Bisons (3-3) 74 yards in 10 plays for the winning score. Given also tied a school record with four touchdown passes. Colgate, which led, 39-25, with less than four minutes to play, was paced by junior tailback Kenny Gamble, who ran 26 times for 178 yards and consecutive first-half touchdowns of 9, 47 and 1 yards.

Gamble's three scores set a Colgate career record of 33 touchdowns, breaking the record set by Tom Parr in 1971-73. Gamble, No. 2 in NCAA Div. I-AA rushing, has 991 yards despite missing three quarters of one game with an injury. The 0-6 start is Colgate's worst since 1966.

This week's game against winless Columbia offers possible escape from the ignominy of the first 0-7 start in Colgate history. Albany failed to score on its first possession, but punched in rushing touchdowns on its second, third and fifth possessions in taking a 21-0 lead.

Todd Hobin's 2-yard scoring run 21 seconds before halftime pulled Cortland State within 28-14 at intermission. Cortland mounted a drive early in the third period, but a bad pitch from quarterback Rich Keefer to running back Steve Pisciotta resulted in a lost fumble.
