PULLMAN, Oct. 29 (UP) Members of the Washington State College football team today took full blame for the Cougars' mediocre record on the gridiron this season and struck back at critics "unjustly blaming our losses on Coach Phil Sorboe." In a letter to the editor of the student newspaper, The Evergreen, the gridders declared: "Although we have made plenty TROJANS TOO MUCH FOR BEARS SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 26 (Via Airmail) By the time you rral this Southern California's annihilation of California's Golden Bears yesterday in Berkeley is old stuff.

Along with some 81,000 other jumping fans we witnessed tlii "Roe Bowl" battle in California's Memorial Stadium. The greatest Trojan team since the days of the late Howard Jones packed too much of everything for California's "new deal" Bears and with but three conference games against Washington, Stanford and UCLA remaining, nothing save an epidemic of the worst possible nature can keep the men of Jeff Cravath from representing the Pacific Coast Conference against Michigan, the Big Nine standard bearer, in the Rose Bowl at Pasadena on New Year's Day. Saturday's titanic struggle was publicized as the Coast's greatest game since Pearl Harbor, the first colossal contest of football's new golden age. For thirty minutes and 15 seconds it was one of the greatest games we have ever seen. We had hardly found our seat in the sardine-packed press box next to the A.P.'s Iiuss New land and the L.

A. Times' Braven Dyer, both old friends, before Cal's Billy Main returned the opening kickoff 33 yards and on the very next play, Jack Swaner circled his left end behind beautiful interference and raced 64 yards to the land you love to touch without anyone laying a hand on him. Twas a beautiful start for Cal but three plays later came what could well have been the turning point of the game. Unable to gain following the kickoff, Troy quick-kicked. Murphy's boot catching the entire Cal secondary napping.

Billy Main raced after the bounding ball, retrieved it but fumbled as he was tackled. We thought the ball should have been dead as Main was in full possession of the porker as he hit the ground but the field judge failed to flash the signal. So Clark, who recovered for Troy, was given the ball on the Cal. 19. The Trojans didn't experience much difficulty putting it over.

El Trojan then marched 54 yards in eight plays to make it 13-7. Shortly later, Cal came back to move ahead 14-13, after which Troy passed almost at will to establish a 20-14 lead at the half. There was enough scoring in that first half to satisfy even those who had paid as high as fifty bricks for a $3 ticket. Cal supporters still had hopes that they might come back in the second half but the opening play of the third quarter broke the Bears' back. Don Doll took Cal's kickoff on his own five-yard stripe, struck straight up the field and appeared to be in the grasp of a tackier, but shook himself loose, veered to the left sideline and raced like a thief 95 yards to touchdown.

That was the ball game as Cal fell apart at the seams thereafter. In the final analysis, Southern California packed far too much power and speed for the Bears. And Cal's pass defense was nothing short of pitiful. They never rushed the passer, permitting the Trojan bombers to lay back and wait until they had several receivers in the clear. Cal's tackling was also very loose and their vaunted forward wall permitted itself to be outcharged by the Trojan line all afternoon.

El Trojan used an even dozen backs and all of them seemed to be effective. We'd hate to think what they would have done with our Johnny Naumu also available for duty. Incidentally, now that Troy is a virtual cinch for the Rose Bowl, Naumu will get to play again as his broken arm is almost sure to be completely mended by then. Troy wasn't conceded much of a chance against Notre Dame after their 7-7 tie with Rice but their last three triumphs 32-0 over Ohio State, 43-6 over Oregon State and now 39-14 over California makes it an altogether different game. We'll still string with the Irish but it should be a battle, one that will pack Los Angeles' spacious Coliseum on Dec.

6. One of the highlights of Saturday's game was the performance Southern California's All-American place-kicker, Tommy Walker. Tommy is a former drum major in the Trojan band. His position is officially listed on the program as "P.K." place kicker. He wears i complete uniform like the rest of the players except that he can't oe bothered with shoulder pads.

His number is (1) and whenever Troy scores a touchdown he immediately races on the field, goes trough every kick as though the very game depended on it and mptly races back to the bench. He is a show in himself. Saturday had a bad day, kicking only three out of six Making it to the spacious Cal stadium in Strawberry Canyon from San Francisco was something in itself, as Ralph Beck of the Mutual Telephone company will tell you. We had Ennie Smith the famed San Francisco to Hawaii flier's special parking pass but still wound up a mile or so from the stadium. Getting home was even worse than going over with the Berkeley police, naturally, none too happy over Cal's fate. The touchdown plays follow: First quarter Dang recovered Buster fumble en the Kaialum 28 and the Rainbows scored in four plays, Hirota going around right end for the final 12 yards. We ask you to blame us for our past performances instead of jumping on the coaches." The Cougars have one win and five losses on their record, including a 13-12 defeat last Saturday by lowly Montana. First quarter Kawaguchi in CYO Bouts Slated For Michigan Picked tercepted Al Kaikaka's pass and returned 31 to the Kaialum 19. Local Pros Face Nuggets At Stadium Line Remains Same For First Encounter With Pass-Crazy Foes Melvin (Buddy) Abreu, 1946 University of Hawaii football captain, will be in the starting lineup forhe Hawaiian Warriors tonight when they face the pass-crazy Sacramento Nuggets at the Stadium, starting at 7:45.

Abreu replaces Ray (Scooter) Scussell at left halfback for Coach Keith Molesworth's men, who will attempt to take out on the Nuggets the chagrin they felt after losing to the San Francisco Clippers, 26-14, last week. Scussell received aminor leg injury in that bruising engagement, and although he'll be able to play tonight, Molesworth decided to give him as much rest as possible. "The Scooter will be in there," Moley declared, "but it's a good chance to see what Abreu can do in a starting assignment." Another lineup change finds Keith Spaith at quarterback in Oscar Givens, who also suffered a. leg wound against the Clippers. "Givens will play only if we're in dire need of his services," the Warrior coach reported.

This means that Alvin Chang, product of Kauai High and the University of Redlands, probably will get a taste of the signal-calling chores.
