THE Mapping Hydraulic Pumping Station is an enormous structure standing-abandoned, heavy machinery rotting inside.

It resembles a cross between a deconsecrated Cathedral and the Saat-chi Collection. As the property of the LDDC, its decay symbolises the death of one kmd of industry (one kind of worth) and the difficult birth of another. The Wise Taylor Partnership's enterprising project, Next Phas, makes this space available to 12 artists, including Gu De Xin, Wanda Mihuleac, Jim Whiting and Ron Haselden. Their work, made in and around and out of the fabric of the building, and reflecting each artist's response to the environment, is on show until October 13. THOMAS LAWSON Lawson's work operates on broadly Brechtian lines at once seducing viewers and setting us at a distance which invites analysis of our response.

RECENTLY an underground cult albeit an expansive one, dance music now dominates the charts and has its own legal radio station in London's Kiss FM.

Launched last week, the station takes a public bow at Highbury Fields (tomorrow, 1.00, free) when the cream of club-based music gives thanks to the kind of station that in its illicit form helped them to break through, despite Radio One's stonewalling. Among those billed are reggae's Aswad and Maxi Priest, Beats International and The Chimes, rappers Rebel MC and Double Trouble and ex-Soul II Soul siren Caron Wheeler. America's LL Cool and Ten City also guest, but significantly, all the above are UK-based, showing that the dance music baton has truly been passed across the Atlantic since rap's early days. JESUS AND MARY CHAIN What do you do when your constituency has moved on? Like Morrissey, the Jesus And Mary Chain were the perfect band for the mid-SOs but have been less graciously treated in the light of the dance explosion. Sensibly avoiding hip hop remixes, their latest records are the usual cross-fertilisation of coruscating rock and surf sounds.
