THE GUARDIAN Thursday May 26 1988 Soccer League play-off ss Middlesbrough 2, Chelsea 0 DueDseai odd agjotrones 16 SPORTS NEWS Cynthia Batsman reply in kind but could only muster a mere zephyr to the gale of support from the Hol-gateend. Middlesbrough fielded the team that pulled the rug from under Bradford in the semi-finals, while Chelsea were also better off than recently, when their squad was down to 13 players, and had Wicks and the England Under-21 skipper, Dor-igo, back in their defence. Chelsea had found Blackburn Rovers easy meat in the play-off semi-final, but soon realised Middlesbrough were tougher nuts. The Londoners were in trouble within seconds, with a fully-stretched Hitchcock only just getting his left hand to a Senior shot. The pressure was maintained on Hitchcock, until Nevin slipped through the red picket to give Dixon a chance, but his shot went over the bar.

Chelsea's individual class was instantly apparent, as it had been against Blackburn, but with a home side fired up to cup-tie pitch it was glitz versus guts in a knuckle-whitening contest. Not much goes above Pallis-ter's head, but when a ball bounced over him as the half-hour approached, Durie pounced only to find Pears equal to the shot. The visitors were to rue that shortly afterwards, when Senior give Middlesbrough the lead with a sea defenders from Slaven's cross. A Ripley cross whistling across the Chelsea goal after the interval caused a sharp intake of breath among the crowd, but the box was full of blue shirts and Ripley had no support. Within seconds Dorigo was running through the Middlesbrough defence.

Neither team was giving an inch in a game played with lung-searing pace and gusto: while Chelsea always had the edge in skill, at times they looked in danger of being overwhelmed by the ferocity of the home attacks. Hitchcock pushed out a Middlesbrough corner and Pallister looked certain to score from the rebound, but he drove the ball straight into the goalkeeper's hands. As the action switched ends, Pears could not handle a powerful shot from Durie but Pates miskicked the rebound. After 82 minutes Senior produced a superb pass to put Sla-ven through. Hitchcock blocked, but could do nothing as Slaven slotted home the rebound.

Middlesbrough revel in this sort of contest witness their FA Cup saga with Everton and Chelsea cannot relish having to take a two-goal deficit into the second leg. Ayresome Park. Awesome Park more likely, as Chelsea ran out to be met by a thunderous roar from the crowd of 25,531. The Teessiders' wall of sound was as impenetrable as Middlesbrough's big, beefy defence soon proved for Chelsea. It would be nice to think that English clubs will return to the arena before long, but not if this means a souring of the sort of atmosphere we had in Stuttgart. The match had to wait 35 minutes for its first serious shot, a low one from Vanen-burg that caused Silvino little trouble. Benfica did not achieve even this much in the first half, although the ease with which Pacheco began to turn Gerets on the left offered them a glimmer of hope. But glimmer is about all that the game did as the players struggled to free themselves from defensive nets which reduced positive movement to a few feeble gestures.

Benfica took some credit for their discipline in holding the prolific PSV attack, but it still made tedious watching. The Portuguese confined themselves to the occasional counter-attack which had even less effect on the middle of the David Foot DAVID KELLY, the most discussed young striker in the Third Division, produced one touch of dazzling brilliance to make the journey from Anfield of Kenny Dalglish utterly worthwhile. The Republic of Ireland player wanted by Liverpool shook off Humphries for the first time ten minutes from time, rounded him with perfect co-ordination and fired in the goal to make Walsall hot favourites for the return meeting with City on Saturday and for a place in the Second Division next season. A minute from the end he added a second to cut the odds even further. The importance of the fixture to both sides was quickly evident from the tightness of the marking and early elements of caution.

Play was too tense to be consistently attractive but it maintained a pace and vigour to hold a packed crowd. David Lacey in Stuttgart FTER last year's brief jfy release from cautious aVcaptivity, the European Cup final returned to normal in Stuttgart last night as PSV Eindhoven and Benfica remained locked in a defensive embrace for more than an hour before tiring legs led to errors and allowed the game to breath a little. Then PSV had chances to win which they scorned; Benfica began to use their speed on the break to great effect but still found it difficult to produce a worthwhile shot; and there was an air of inevitability about the proceedings as the game went into extra-time, followed by a penalty shoot-out won by PSV. With the Neckar Stadium packed on a warm evening and bedecked with the red and white common to both clubs, and the rival supporters noisy but disciplined, it was pleasasnt to lit reminded of what Euro Sansom passes Latin test Swansea 2, Torquay 1 McNichol has answer to threat David Lacey reflects on Bobby Robson's gains from his Colombian education header through a ruck of Chel-1 Walsall looked more efficient at the start. Trevor Christie almost had the unlikely bonus of a first-minute goal.

Then Graeme Forbes put them in trouble with a needlessly attempted back pass from near the touchline, but Milne was not sharp enough to take full advantage. Steve McClaren won a vital midfield tussle when up from defence and eased his pass to Alan Walsh. The tall winger, always at his best when he blasts his shots, this time tried with some delicacy to place the ball and Fred Barber saved. By the 38th minute however Walsh was shedding such refinements. Steve Neville, won a free kick at the expense of Forbes.

The defensive line, strung out across the field, seemed impregnable. Walsh clearly spied a gap and fired in a ferocious salvo which no one touched on its way into the net. Twice before the interval City might have built on that lead, quay's promotion dream alive. A spell of early Swansea pressure led to a free kick by James which was almost headed home by Melville, yet Torquay always threatened to score on the break. Dawkins had two chances in five minutes, his header from Kelly's cross being easily held by Guthrie, who then brilliantly turned away a 12-yard shot after a defensive mix-up.

It was always going to be difficult for Swansea to break down Torquay's muscular five-man defence, the best in the Fourth Division, but just when they seemed to be running out of ideas, they went ahead through a beautifully conceived pini (Ur 7-5, 6-3, 6-1; Perez-Roklsn (Arg) bt Meinecke (WO) 6-2, 6-2, 6-0; Bates (GB) bt Cancellottl (It) 6-3, 4-6, 7-6, 3-6, 7-5; Hlasek (Swl) bt Witsken (US) 7-6, 6-1, 6-3; A Vysand (USSR) bt Lozano (Mex) 6-0, 6-3, 6-3; Kuhnsn (WG) bt Masso (Arg) 7-6. 6-3. 6-4; Noah (Fr) bt Matter (Braz) 6-2. 6-4. 4-6, 7-6; Sanchaz (Sp) bt Pugh (US) 6-1 6-4, 6-2; Ounnars-son (Swe) bt Saceanu (WG) 7-6, 6-3, 7-6; Rensbsrg (US) bt Engel (Swe) 6-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3: A Agassi (US) bt Narduccl (It) 6-1, 6-2.

With 20 minutes to go, Vanen-burg- and Heintze created a chance for Kieft which was lost when the striker slipped before he could shoot and ended up sitting on the ball. Five minutes later Lerby nodded back Kieft's centre from the far post and found Nielsen unmarked only for the big Dane to shoot wildly wide.

Switzerland to prepare for Saturday's game in Lausanne with the side that will face the Republic of Ireland in Stuttgart on June 12 more or less decided. Barnes and Waddle will almost certainly be on the flanks, Adams and Wright will probably be the centre-backs, and after another indifferent display by Anderson, Stevens will be right-back. Wright's tendency to lunge in at the wrong moment and Adams's distribution still give cause for concern, but apart from the Colombian goal, a free header for Escobar, Bobby Robson was reasonably happy with his central defenders on Tuesday.

If Wright wins the vote over Watson it will be because he is a better passer of the ball. If Adams stays it will be because Robson believes his potential is too good to ignore. Whatever the surrounding combinations a lot is going to depend on the form and fitness of Shilton, Bryan Robson, Beardsley and Lineker, and to these four it would be reasonable to add the name of Sansom. England are banking on experience, which on Tuesday prevented a diverting exercise becoming a masterclass. By now Walsall were beginning to push forward assertively in search of an equaliser. And it came after 62 minutes following a corner taken by Mark Goodwin. Forbes's fierce header was cleared off the line and in the frantic goalmouth melee that followed it appeared that Christie got the vital final touch as the rebound went in. It goaded Joe Jordan to tear off his track suit and take over from Neville, and within five minutes he was shooting on the turn only a foot wide. Then came Kelly's double blow to ruin his evening.

Whatever happens in the European Championship, Bobby Robson's players will not be easily surprised. For a start the goalkeepers in West Germany can be expected to behave like goalkeepers. They will not wear the variety of hats sported by Colombia's Rene Higuita, who when he was not doubling up as a sweeper gave a passable impersonation of an attacking full-back. "He left his penalty area five times during the game," said Robson wonderingly late on Tuesday night. "He's come out to the touch-line -to tackle Gary Lineker, he's shown Peter Beardsley the ball and beaten him before taking it back into the box and picking it up." Higuita's singular performance epitomised the essential appeal of Colombia.

They were skilful certainly, enjoying that Latin-American comfort on the ball which, as we have seen with Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina, seems to be inbred, but above all they were different. "Look," said the England manager, "there was Steve Mc-Mahon, who all season has played in a successful Liverpool team, the best club side in the country. "After the game I asked him what he had thought of it and he shook his head. 'Different world, he said. And that's the whole point.

There's an enormous gap between club football and the game played at this level." Robson rated Colombia more highly than the Brazilian team who drew 1-1 with England a year ago and attracted a midweek capacity crowd of 92,000 to Wembley. Tuesday's match was watched by a meagre 25,000. "Colombia haven't got the name," said the England manager, "but they have got the players. "Valderrama is outstanding of course, but what about Iguaran and Redin and the No.14 Alvarez, who was tackling Barnes on one wing and in the next instant chasing Waddle on the other. It was an education for our players." Not that Robson was dissatisfied with the England performance far from it.

The thing that pleased him most was the re-emergence of Kenny Sansom as a full-back of true international class. "He shone out like a beacon," the England manager declared. With the cover at left-back looking a little thin, Sansom's resurgence could hardly have been better timed. Lineker's 25th goal in 27 international starts, another performance of quality from Beardsley until he began to tire and, not least, Bryan Robson's third outstanding match for England in succession enabled the team to maintain its momentum going into the last warm-up game before the European Championship. Yesterday the players left for after a shareholders' meeting ended in defeat for an offer designed to pave the way to a takeover by a building company, GB Homes.
