THE GUARDIAN Wednesday March 21 1990 SPORTS NEWS 15 Snooker Fisher breaks male monopoly Old Vic and company ready for top billing CflvaBwrton teur from Burton who finished 32nd, said: "It's totally outrageous. I'm not detracting from Allison's ability. She's a good player. But there are 122 better players. Maybe wo should all dress in drag." Dennis Stevenson, manager of Stefan Mazrocis, the European amateur champion from Leicester, was even more forthright.

"Stefan's been turned down because the WPBSA say he's had two bites of the cherry, so it'll be disgusting if they let Allison in. She's not good enough. We won't be seeing her at the televised stages." The 1990 professional playoffs, due to take place at Preston next week, have been postponed and will be cancelled unless the EGM rejects the way in which the board proposes to Increase the membership of the WPBSA. ALLISON FISHER, the 22-year-old women's world champion, has been offered professional status by tho World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association. Providing certain constitutional amendments are approved at an extraordinary general meeting in Sheffield on April 18, she will be eligible to enter all qualifying competitions for next season's world-ranking tournaments.

"This will be a major breakthrough for women in sport," Fisher said yesterday. "It's fantastic." Barry Heam, whose Match-room League has used Fisher as a regular supporting attraction, was equally enthusiastic, and another influential new member of the WPBSA board, Ian Doyle, believes she will generate priceless publicity for snooker. Others, however, were less than delighted. The snooker world would agree Uiat Fisher, who finished 123rd in the professional-ticket series, is as good as most of the lower-ranked professionals, but so are many male amateurs and there have already been complaints about sex discrimination in reverse. John Shilton, a full-time ama aSBVEOFFREY GIBBS.

ff senior Jockey Club ML fl handicapper, will be SWi among many delighted by the number of high class older horses in training on the flat this season. Gibbs has been critical of the dash for the cash approach of owners anxious to pack three-year-olds off to stud prematurely but with the likes of Old Vic, Cacocthes, Michelozzo, Legal Case, Carroll House and He de Chypre still around, this promises to be one of the most exciting seasons for years. Old Vic was officially rated the best middle-distance horse in Europe last season, after scintillating victories in the Prix du Jockey Club and Irish Derby, and it was a great shame that firm ground kept him off the course after July. There must be a possibility that a dry summer could again restrict his programme, which has the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes at Ascot as its centrepiece and the Arc as a finale, but Henry Cecil gave him his first bit of work on the Limekilns at Newmarket on Saturday. If all goes well a first glimpse of him could come in the Jockey Club Stakes at the Newmarket Guineas meeting.

With Old Vic representing last year's Classic crop and the Arc winner Carroll House carrying the flag for the five-year-olds, the fascinating possibility of a comparison of three top class generations emerges. The decision to keep Carrol House in training is a bold one. The Arc winner's stock is not yet sufficiently soundly based for him to ride out the storm of defeat With a rating of 128 in the International Classifications he is the top older horse but still 61b below Old Vic. Hopefully, they will meet somewhere for the accuracy in this assessment to be tested. Cacoelhcs could be right up there with them.

He was the "nearly horse" of last season and, in view of his record, connections really had no other option but to keep him in training. A disappointing third in the Derby, he ran the race of his life when beaten a neck by Nashwan in the King George and improvement on that will see him right at the top of the tree. Improvement is quite likely too as he was a rather unfurnished three-year-old with room to strengthen. Firm ground, of course, suits Cacoethes well and with his ability to run near the pace, the Coronation Cup at Epsom looks an ideal contest for him. The easiest Classic winner last season was Michelozzo, who strolled home by eight lengths in the St Leger.

He will be one of the most fascinating four-year-olds around for his potential is still largely untapped. Michelozzo, by Northern Baby, did not see a racecourse as a two-year-old and has run only four times. On only his second attempt he was beaten just over three lengths by Carroll House in the Princess of Wales's Stakes, an incredible effort considering his lack of experience and one which leads to the conclusion that he could be a live Arc contender. Arguably the most exciting finish of last season was the desperate struggle which took place in the Champion Stakes when Legal Case got home by a head from Dolpour, with lie de Chypre a short-head away third. It is great news that all three remain in training but Legal Case is possibly the most interesting.

He is by the dual Arc winner, the late maturing. Alleged, out of a Northern Dancer mare and, therefore, has a wonderful pedigree. He won on the firm and the soft last season and showed tremendous resolution so could easily be the best horse the very able Cumani has had so far. Cumani takes charge of the four-year-old filly Roseate Tern this season. She was sold by Lord Carnarvon to American publisher Peter Brant last December for 1.1 million guineas and transferred from Dick Hern's stable.

Last year she won the Lancashire and Yorkshire Oaks so will be aimed at the top races although improvement is necessary if she is to enhance her reputation. An interesting aside here is that Hern found she went best in blinkers, an aid to which Cumani is reputedly strongly opposed. Hern is hi his last season at West Ilsley and would no doubt love to do another Nashwan with that colt's half-brother Mukddaam, but the Major has two talented four-year-olds in Pilot and Gold Seam, who could both prove top class. Pilot finished second to Snow Bride in the Musidora Stakes before cracking a pastern while Gold Seam, a lovely, big colt by Mr Prospector, could emerge as a leading miler. At this distance he will have to contend with Barry Hills's four-year-old Distant Relative, third to Zilzal at Ascot, and the unlucky Ex-bourne, the forgotten horse of 1989.

Exbourne. trained by Guy finished second to Nashwan in the Guineas but a leg injury curtailed all further activity. He is a half-brother to Top Socialite, who was placed in the Irish and French Guineas, although it is possible he will get a mile and a quarter. The ten furlongs division looks strong with Scenic, Citi-dancer, and Pirate Army likely to join the battle with lie de Chypre and Dolpour. John Samul BRITISH ski racing's headquarters are likely to be shifted from Surrey to Scotland as part of a major shake-up in its personnel and organisation. Tom Fitzpa trick, the British Ski Federation's Scottish chairman, said yesterday: "I am looking at possible accommodation in the Glas-gow-Stirling-Edinbnrgh triangle. Sixty-five per cent of Britain's better racers are from Scotland, and costs there will be significantly lower." The snggested move is bound to be contentious, as relations between southern-based racing clubs and Scotland have always been touchy. Richard Berry, a British International Ski Federation member and former racer, said: "I agree with Tom that we had to take British racing away from committees, but moving office bodily to Scotland may not be what the Scottish National Ski Council wants." The British problems do not end at office location. Harry Zwerger, Britain's Austrian men's Alpine trainer, is quitting, as are the American head Alpine coach, Larry Gianatti, and the racing manager, Alasdair Scobbie.

Boris Duncan's three points for 13th place in last Thursday's downhill were all the men's or women's teams achieved all season. Gianatti said yesterday: "Wp are not simply jumping overboard. We have advertised for an Alpine director and the interviews are taking place now. As for the season, the boys didn't want to work with Harry Zwerger and vice versa. He is more authoritarian than they wanted, but Harry is right in saying that Martin and Graham Bell have been too focused on affairs that do not concern them." The teams had had difficult snow this year, but that was the same for everybody.

"The British can't expect a Zur-briggen every year, bnt there is no reason why Britons should not regularly make the top 25." NeU Griffiths, from Falkirk, a Scottish National Ski Council official, is tnlHnp over temporarily as racing manager, and is one of the favourites for the Alpine directorship. Fitzpatrick is giving np the chairmanship in the next six months, and a full-time federation chief is being appointed to look after a budget approaching 1 million annually. league for at least three seasons. Of the six such players chosen by Dampier, only one, Med-way's Kevin McNaught, has been in Britain for less than twice that minimum period; he is now in his fourth season. Brian Mason (Slough) and Jamie Crapper (Bracknell) both have a total of six seasons, while Chris Kelland (Murray-field), John Lawless (Cardiff) and Gary Stefan (Slough) have played in Britain for 10 or more seasons.

The inclusion of these players gives the squad a depth unprecedented at British club level, where teams seldom use more than two separate lines of three forwards. "Not many teams I've seen over the years play four lines and get away with it," said Dampier. "Right now we could play four good lines or, if we have to, drop to three very good lines. "We've got to be confident If we can't do it with this team then we will really have to have a rehash." The Australian squad, who were defeated 10-4 by Romford in a warm-up game within hours of touching down, include 11 players born outside Australia. Of these, four are returning to the land of their birth, four are Canadian, with single individuals from Czechoslovakia, Finland and the United States.

Spain, the third country contending the group, drew 2-2 with Australia in the tournament's opening game last night after leading into the final session with two goals from Jordi Pous. They play Britain tomorrow. He will be attempting to land the Ascot Gold Cup treble, achieved only by Sagaro this century, although one has to go back to Invershin in 1929 to find the last successful seven-year-old. As can be seen there is a lot to look forward to.

The 1990 vintage could be outstanding. and Albert Place had been entered along with that horse in several other races. Jeremy Glover's Invasion (4.15) is fancied to give his rivals the weight and a beating in the Boon Novice Hurdle. "Last year's national team probably couldn't have beaten Cardiff or Murrayfield," Dam-pier said yesterday, as his team prepared for their first Pool game against Australia at Cardiff. "I don't think there is a team in the league that can handle the national team this year." The coach's selection is contentious in two respects in particular: the inclusion of Canadian-born players now qualified to play for Britain under the International Ice Hockey Federation's regulations, and the presence of David Graham, a netminder from Dampier's own club, the Nottingham Panthers. The latter issue perhaps had more substance when the squad was announced in January: Graham's form then was indifferent.

However, he did win the award for the tournament's best netminder in Belgium 12 months ago, and he is now third in the Heineken British League's list of Premier Division netminding averages. The two above him are Jeff Smith and Martin McKay, who make up Dampier's netminding trio in Cardiff. On the issue of reclassified players, the DBF requires only that they hold a valid passport of the country for whom they are playing, having also participated in that nation's national 3.00 PORTLAND WALK CLAIMING HURDLE 2m C1.S40 1 P11F45 SEA SHADOW (TO) (D)(BF) A Barrow 5-12-0 Wlnrhto(i) 2 3-01323 VANBU(16)(0) Jenkins 5-1 1-10 ROunwood 3 OU CHESS MISTRSSS (68) White 5-1 1-8 Burks 4 52O-P00 COMBNBDEXBRC1SS(13)(D) Akohurst6-t1-8 5 541500- THEOVERNIOHTMAN (323) McMahon 5-11-6 TWsll 211332 WALK OF LIFE (18) (BF) MPipo5-11-6 Scudamors 7 1 12232 BASIC FUH (13)(D) Beever4-11-5 OMcOtrl(a) 40124 DUNCTOH HILL (39) SColo4-11-5 BMtsmy () 5-42645 FOREST FAWN (39) Wheeler 5-11-4 JWhKe 10 POPOP-3 AFRICAN MINSTREL (1 It) Jockes5-11-3 1 1 055- SHAKE EYE (4361 Wharton 5-1 1-3 O'HsW 5aT) 5 MARCH BUMPER NATIONAL HUNT FLAT (Oh I) 2m 1 ABNEGATION Johnson 5-1 1-10 2 CARATELU Armytago 5-11-10 3 6 GREAT POKEY (20) A Corner 5-11-10 4 JOOAMI Beaumont 5-1 1-10 5 44 KAMBALDA RAMBLER (12) Eamshaw 6-11-10 8 0 LUPV MINSTRSL(128) Parker 5-1 1-10 7 40 ONE FOR THB NORTH (IB) FitzGerald 5-11-10 8 2 SHUTTLE HILL (14) TTato511-lO 9 WEEGHOSTIE Misa Geddos 5-11-10 10 31 MUDAKIM(26) Broad 4-1 1-9 11 3 UHN FALLS (12) Richards 5-1 1-5 18 5MA3HUM(6 ABatoy4-11-2 13 AN MICHELLE 0 Loe 4-10-1 1 TOP FCfiSS TIPS HudaMm 8, On Far The North 7.
