We have here a good bejiinning to a new Tolirme tbe eerenteenth and on which promises to JnatifiT the opinion we hare before expressed, that Zijipimeotft is one of the most agreeable and interesting of the magarines. It opens with a paper on "The Century; Its Fruito and Its Festival." which the subject is treated somewhat differently from the manner in which it has been hitherto dealt with. It Is not confined to American progress only, bot touches upon that elsewhere, and the writer carries nt that idea fully he wOl find a wide and rich field for investigation.

Mr. Bruce re-. somes bis articles on the scenery of tbe Thames, Hiring a good account of Hampton Court and ClaremonV and. ws imagine, eonelnding the series. The Illustrations still suggest a previous generation in the habits and clothing of the people represented, but no exception can be taken to them on the score of inaccuracy of scenery.

MOTTHLT. The approaching Centennial largely affects tbe pages of this monthly. The first paper, by J.

F. Umea, is descriptive of Xew-York aa it was in the Bevolatiouary days, and the second, by IL F. Bcndder, who adopts the title, Cupid snd Mars," is a story founded on the siege of Boston. Both are very good contributions to oar centennial history. Tbe next two papers concern house-builders and Loose-furnishers one is by John Burroughs, who makes manv useful suggestions, but lavs down theories which we do not think win meet general approval among sssthetic tastes the other, by Clarence Cook, is well worth the consideration not only of people who have houses to furnish, but of others who, having furnished their houses, have fallen into many common blunders in the process.

Tbe object of the writer is to induce people to do their house-furnisbingtheaMelres independently of tbe ad rice of upholsterers, and to explain the principles upon which it should be dona. Mr. E. E. Hale begins a story which is to run through the year, and entitled Philip Nolan's Friends." The scene is laid chiefly in the Mississippi Valley, ad, judging from the opening chapters, it, too, promises to be a timely production.

Gabriel Couroy" is con -tinned to the seventeenth chapter, and will probably rank as one of Bret Harte'a best 'works. In all the aerials there is only one American novel now being published which is as good, but the style and matter are so different in the two that a comparison can hardly be made. The remaining prose contents are of less moment. They comprise a note oa education in England, by H. G.

Taylor some Revolutionary letters published by J. O. Cheney Childhood's Fancies," by T. W. Higeinson Hooks and Eyes," br H.

Eokford Norwegian Traits," by A. S. Packard, and a sketch of the French Benaissanoe, compiled by W. Lam-oroux. There Is poetry br Mrs.

Piatt. E. C. Btedman, C. E.

Brooks, CThaxter, II. Prof. Boyeaen. and B. IL Stoddard, the last of whom sends som pretty verses.

The miscellaneous notes are of tbe usual character, but when Dr. Holland attempts the construction of anecdotes he should be careful of his premises. Oxford undergraduates do not travel from London to Oxford at the end of term. Their course then is usually in the opposite direotion. Neither do they or any other travelers make their journeys to and from the country in England in drays.

We should imagine that Dr. Holland is not a particularly well-informed or wise sort of man. THE OaXAXT. This' magazine enters upon the tenth year of its existence and the twenty-first volume with at least one good feature the concluding chapters of Dear Lady Disdain." If this is not one of the worst novels of recent' date and we do not say that it is it will assuredly rank prominently among the most stupid of them. Its place will probably be taken by "Madcap Violet," from the pen of the author of the Printers of Thule, of which two chanters make their appearance this month.

Seven chapters of Reuben Dale," by Annie Howell, are also here, and win be found well worth reading. This, we believe, is the first novel which Miss Howells has written, but it is marked by all the best qualities which have become familiar in her shorter prod notions. Among the general articles two only stand out as chiefly -noticeable one br Albert Bhodes. who offers some sensible remarks and some extremely good adrioe upon "Woman's Occupations," and the other a short contribution by B. B.

Kimball, wherein be points out the abuse that has been made in this country of the word banker, and directs a well-timed caution to the public Charles W. Baymond tells, amid muou sharp criticism, som interesting particulars regarding Western surreys, and suggests where reform might be effected. An anonymous writer has wnat reads like a compilation, freshened up with a few original observations, on the JajKWiese stage Dr. Guernsey furnishes a sketeh of Walter Saraze Land or Justin McCarthy takes occasion to abuse the institutions under which he lives, in the hope of pleasing American readers, and there is a paper relating to the French aristocracy, suggested by a work of M. Tame.

Tbe poetry is confined to three pieces, of whicb the most pretentious is br Prof. Boyesen. Among tbe miscellaneous notes the reader will find some that are worthy of attention. ST. NICHOLAS.

The boys and girls who expect same-thing exceptional from Mr. Dodge on account ef the season will not be disappointed. For although this is a January number, the prevalent system of premature publication makes it also a Christmas number. Accordingly we hare in it descriptions of Christmas in many places in the. South, by E.

M. in the Far East, by Fanny B. Fendge in the Arctio Begions, by J. IL Woodbury; besides a number of contributions which arc applicable to Christmas everywhere. Tbe frontispiece' is taken from Tintoretto's painting ef 8k Christopher, and IL II." narrates in verse a legend of that saint whicb occupies nearly three pages.

Among the contributors this month are several wen-known name. Bayard Taylor sends a pleasing notice of Jon of Iceland Eggleetoa tells a Honsier fairy story which be calls Bobby and the Key-bole," and which is quaintly illustrated C. P. Cranch explains, of course in verse, how Willie went coasting by mnoalight J. T.

Trowbridge contributes tbe first part, of a capital story, entitled Bass Core Sketches Couple of Cruaoes." and Susan Coolidg has a good fairy tale Tolnetta and the Elves.1 But that, after aU. which the young readers of St. AtcAola most look forward, too, from month to month, is the adventures of 'The Boy Emigrants," as told by Noah Brooks. There ar two new chapters of this, with a couple ef illustration and tbe promise of the earlier portions is amply sustained. But there artin adoaen contributions, either in prose or verse, which must remain unnoticed here, to say nothing of Jack-in-the-Pnlpit and all the- other faiTiPff departments of riddles, letters, and other things at the end.

For all this we must rater th reader to tbe magatirae itself, than which none is better or likely to prer so rich a earoe amusement in readinxt chil ef both sexes. TEC AQUATIC MOSTHXT. CWreepondeaea," which, a bar before remarked, is one of the most inter-, esting feature of this, th American repre-sentatire of boating and yachting interests, OTtrt but four contributions this month. "Herd-a-l makes some propositions respecting th handicapping ot yachts for races. and takes occasion to express his surprise at tb attention which has been given tbe pest gammer to the Mohawk, Big Topmast" has a few words for his opponent wh attrecat racing Tnarhhies tn preference to deep-keel yacht.

Anchor," referring to a picture ef the Ad die V. painted by on of our New-York artists, expresses his regret, unnecessarily in ur opinion, at the lack of encouragement which Corinthian yachting ha received from tb public and th press, and Stuart M. Taylor, after evincing hi delight at the October matches tells anew the story of the wonderful race between tbe Ariel, Taeping, and Senica from China to England. Tbe narrative, however. Is a quotation, and would have been just as good without tbe interpolations.

Centennial matters, of course, receive attention, and probable contestants on the Schuylkill win find some information in tbe reported work of tbe Philadelphia committee, as well as a little amusement in tbe unpromising labors of the CoHege Association at Springfield, Mass. Tbe editorial items, as well as tbe news of yachting and rowing rents, past and to come, with tbe several comments thereto are complete, astber always are, fullr justifying the claims of the Aquatie to the continued support of the aquatic world. dkmorest's mosthlt. Fifty-two quarto page devoted to the fashions and to a great variety of which is particularly interesting, not to say important, to tbe ladies, are some guarantee at least for tbe magnitude of this magazine. Of its merits otherwise, we mar not be allowed to speak with fun authority, but it has the reputation, and we Where justly, of being one of tbe best of its kind.

Trifling errors sometimes appear in its references to general subjects, but the matter of the fashions it may, we beliere, be trusted. It always contains a great deal of useful information in other brancnes also, which are ot interest to its readers. THE CATHOLIC WORLD. Thin magazine stall retains its position as the best of the serials devoted to the interests of the Catholic Church. It is ably and liberally conducted, while at the same time abating nothing of its attachment to the principles it supports.

Tbe current number contains a number of articles which are of interest, no less to Protestants than to Catholics, as, for example, those relating to tbe President's speech at Des Moines, to the Protestant Episcopal Church Congress al Philadelphia, and to the Conference of Anglicans and Old Catholics at Bonn. There is likewise a great deal of well-chosen reading of a lighter character, and tbe book reviews hare often struck us as the best, sometimes because the boldest and most impartial, ot all that are to be found in the monthly magazine.
