Ani 9 DO 9 5 4 FEE 15 BI 9 IN BARGAINS YOURS FOR THE READING CLASSIFIED ADS 521-9111 FUNERAL NOTICE OBITUARIES Almeida, Hawaiian Music Composer, Dies Entertainer and composer John Kameaaloha "Johnny" Almeida known as the dean of Hawaiian music died Wednesday in Hale Nani Health Center. He was 87. A self-taught musician, he was a singer, instrumentalist, the leader of Johnny Almeida and the Hawaiians, a teacher and radio personality.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Honolulu Stake Tabernacle, Makiki Ward, Church of Jesus Christ of LatterSaints. Friends may call after 8:30 a.m. Burial will be in Hawaiian Memorial Park. The family asks that casual attire be worn.

Mr. Almeida was born in Pauoa Valley, under a bush where his mother sought shelter as she was gathering maile with some friends. A doctor said that the child's defective vision was the result of poisonous maile sap. As a young child, he could distinguish shadows and light patterns, but he was completely by age 10. He was of Hawaiian and 1 Portuguese descent and grew up speaking Hawaiian.

He began singing with church groups when he was 4 and later with school choirs. The sixth grade was his last year of schooling. had organized the Waianae Star Glee Club. At 16, first place in a talent show sponsored by the Consolidated Amusement Co. Mr.

Almeida could play a number of instruments, including the piano, ukulele, guitar, saxophone, violin, banjo, bass and his trademark mandolin. His falsetto voice was a familiar one to followers of Hawaiian music. He composed more than 300 songs, most with flower themes. Among them are "Tuberose Hula," "Green Rose "Tesu Meke Kanaka Waiwai" and "Kuu Ipo Pua Rose." Mr. Almeida and his late son, also a musician, performed together and an album of the "My Son elder puAimeida's was titled In the 1920s he was a director of Matson ship orchestras.

His last public performance was in 1980 when Brigham Young University presented him with its Na Makua Mahalo la (The Most Venerable One) Award. Among his other many honors, he was given a lifetime membership in the Hawaiian Professional Song Writers Society in 1972. He also was a life member of Musicians Union, Local 677, and John Almeida Dean of Hawaiian music the American Society of Composer, Authors and Publishers and an honorary life member of the Hawaiian Professional Songwriters' Society. He belonged to Senior Citizens and was a member the Waikiki Lions club for 30 years. Comments came from several composer-musician colleagues yesterday.

Composer R. Alex Anderson said "I knew him many years and he always called me Alika, which is Hawaiian for Alex. Apigo, 61, of Papaikou, a retired sales clerk, died Wednesday in Hilo Hospital. A funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday at. Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Burial will be in Mauna Kea Memorial Park.

Apigo was born in Hilo. She is survived by two sons, Jesse and Bernard; three daughters, Mrs. Manuel (Pearl) Olivar, Mrs. Jeffrey (Monica) Pihi and Gwendolyn Galarse-Sitan; two brothers, Oliva Ahulau and Louis Ahulau; four sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Mary) Kailiwai, Teddy (Frances) Gaspar, Pauline Chow and Mrs.

He was an accounting technician at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard an employee of OK Service Station. Funeral services will be at 6 p.m. Monday at Nuuanu Memorial Park Mortuary. Mr. Okumura was born in Honolulu.
