Former Oneonta batting coach Rob Thomson will bear the weight of this tradition as the O-Yanks manager this season. Thomson also inherits another, more recent Oneonta tradition: losing.

When Thomson manages Oneonta for the first time tonight in the Yankees' New York-Penn League opener against the Utica Blue Sox, he effectively takes over an Oneonta franchise that has not had a winning season since Jack Gillis skippered the club to a 42-35 mark in 1991. The Yankees are 103-133 over the past three years, including 30-45 last season under second-year manager Ken Dominguez, who's coaching at Tampa in the Class A Florida State League. After surveying his team's first practice Tuesday at Damaschke Field, Thomson said he thinks Oneonta has the power to avoid a fourth-straight losing season. "I think we've got a good team," Thomson said. "We've got good pitching, with a bullpen that's real strong.

1 think we'll be above average with the bats." Oneonta had a losing season in 1994 despite having NY-Penn's top pitcher Matt Drews (7-6, 2.10 ERA). Thomson foresees Drew's replacement as right-hander Bobby St. Pierre, the Yankees' seventh-round pick out of the University of Richmond. St. Pierre, voted the Cape Cod League pitcher of the year in 1994 with a 9-1 record and a 1.44 ERA for Falmouth, features a fastball clocked in the high 80s to low 90s.

He went 6-0 with a 1.24 ERA this season over his first seven starts for Richmond, finishing 11-3 with a 4.34 ERA. "It's kind of all happening so fast," said St. Pierre, who signed with the Yankees on Sunday. "I have to keep reminding myself that this is professional ball." St. Pierre, 6-foot-l, 190 pounds, pitched his last collegiate game two weeks ago.

He also signed Sunday and came to Oneonta from his Maryland home. Thomson decided to start righthander Denny Lail today, choosing him because of his above average fastball and breaking ball. Offensively, Thomson points to MINOLTA Maxxum 330si Slv Kodak Gold IWM Value Pack Nikon 2Xmmfi.5 Lens Lite TOUCh Built-in Panorama Mode FREE y- Red-Eve Reduction wms SB rAu -inn n-i. "I'm sure I'll work on using the field, and using more power.

It's going to be a long season for me, since I just came from a 56-game season at Western Michigan University." Wilcox is a left-handed batter who can strike. He showed off the power by homering in the Yankees' intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday night. Thomson picked Rod Smith to bat leadoff. Smith played outfield for the Tampa Yankees of the Gulf Coast League last year, batting .286 with 18 RBI. He stole 20 bases in 24 attempts.

"This year more drafted players are coming," Thomson said, "which makes for an older group than it was last year. More players have college experience. That is what this league really is, a college league." Oneonta pitching coach Tom Filer likes the rest of his pitching staff, which includes right handers Thomas Becker, Richard Olivier, Ben Ford and left-handers Dale Brent and Monte Barnes.

Olivier, who signed as a free agent out of the Dominican Republic, stands out to Filer because of a fastball clocked in the low 90s and an established change-up. Olivier, who also has a curveball, played in the Gulf Coast League last year. "Players here learn a little bit more about the game then what they knew before," Filer said.
