For the ben- efit of relatives back home, they are looking forward to a rousinz aloha when the vessel moves into Honolulu on Jim Ifi. They wee all right until the night before the Matsonia arrived in New' York, when Hawaiian music drenched the ship. Then they started thinking about home. It was full moon and the cold Atlantic translated its swells into the warmer waters off Maui, or Oahu, or some other home island.

THERE'S Chief Bos'n Stanley Kalino, a Kahului, Maui, boy, a 15-year veteran with Matson. His first ship Vas the old Matsonia and he served as a seaman in 1938 on the old Monterey. His last ship was the Hawaiian Farmer with Capt. Bill Canty. This ship, said Stanley, is not only beautiful, she's got Bos'n Mate Henry Henriques is Hilo born, at sea 13 years.

His first ship was the Waipio in the Northwest trade, later he served on the old Matsonia, and in 1954 was on the SS Lur-line. For eight years he has lived In Philadelphia. His last Honolulu call was Just a year ago on the Hawaiian Citizen. He was the first to mention that the Island music made him "plenty homesick." ANOTHER bos'n mate, Herbert Yuen is a Honolulu boy. 'Somebody's gotta be born in Honolulu," he said, adding he wanted to get home to some haole chop saey.

Yuen was on Midway the morning of Dec. 7. "What was your first ship?" we asked. "The Humuula." This broke the ice. It turned put only Stan Coppel -had served on the old rust bucket which should by now, be in Miami.

An 18-year veteran at sea, Yuen served on both th old Matsonia and the Lurline. SEAMAN Joe Chai is the deck delegate representing the Sail ors Union of the Pacific. His home is in New York but he married a Hawaiian girl. She n'a hnrn in New York. He was home last July and this June wants a luau with "plenty poi." IN LOS ANGELES the Mat-onia will pick up Island food for these boys frozen poi to be heated again, and opihi, squiA, dried aku and opelu.

I think they were fooling when they said they'd average ten pounds of poi per man per day. Ia the purser's office an earlier Sea Lane column was thumb-tacked to the wall with the note: "DON'T SHE know about the engineering department what about; the rest of the boys?" So hera about the rest of the boys. The note, we understand, was penned by coin-collecting Chief Engineer Helge Lundby about whom we've already written. There is Chief Plumber Jo seph Botelho who now live in San Francisco and 20 years at sea with Matson's freighter fleet; Conrad Glade, an Island boy wno is senior second engineer and a long time with the fleet (Mrs. Glade is on board and will fly home after a New York vis it).

May 23, 30, 1957) is bound to have a strong ef- feet nn thp srnnomv of Hawaii. Louis S. Rothschild, U.S. under secretary of commerce for transportation, told a Maritime Day luncheon audience yesterday. 1 Mr.

Rothschild, no stranger to. Hawaii, was guest speaker at a combined gathering of some 500 members and guests of the Honolulu Propeller Club and the; Chamber of Commerce of Honolulu. Malcolm Mc- Naughton, president of the chamber and Dick Evans, president of the Propeller Club, were co-masters of ceremo nies. "THIJRE COULD be no more appropriate place to celebrate Maritime Day than here in these glorious Islands of Ha waii," Mr. Rothschild began.

"I doubt that there is a spot on all the globe where trans port is of such- vital, pressing, immediate importance. "Transportation for Hawaii is no luxury. The links of ships and planes that tie this strat egic area to America's mai- land and all the world are vital arteries in the very existence of the Islands' international trade and commerce." MR. ROTHSCHILD went on to say that the Pacific world which lies around the Hawaiian Islands covers one third of the land surface of the globe. Upon the shores of the Pacific land masses dwell half the world's population, while hundreds of millions of other people are within easy reach.

"One factor in which all Pacific nations may rejoice is the growth of the new industrial enterprises of the Pacific American' coastal area," he said. "We have witnessed the play of economic forces that have giv en birth to a vast industrial complex on the United States shores of the Pacific ocean, one which begins to rival Eastern industry and to match produc tion anywhere in the World. "THIS MEANS that without hauling across or sailing around the U.S. land mass, goods and materials 'Made in America are available in the marts of the Pacific," said the under secretary. It also means that the West Coast as its population crows and expands, will need more of the things the Pacific can pro duce -and will provide greater and nearer markets for the exotic staple products of Hawaii." TOUCHING ON the boogie question of Communism, Mr.
