"Most Yankees are actually Southerners who are showing the right odds and interpreting history correctly," Mr. Rambo said through a loud-speaker system as he sat atop his horse before the final loud volley at the end of the hourlong program. Gen. Wilson had about 15,000 well-trained Union troops with Spencer repeating rifles when he rode into Selma to face a defensive force of mostly old men and young boys.

The battle was over in about an hour and the Civil War ended a week later. "This has been our most successful re-enactment ever," said Kiwa-nis Club member Mike Reynolds. "It's hard to get a true figure on attendance, but I know we've had about 20,000 people here during the past three days." Among those attending was a Danish television crew that has been doing a 30-minute documentary on the American South. Ulla Pors, the station's American correspondent who is producing the program, said she and her crew have visited the Mississippi Delta and other Southern locations. "We're showing the changes in the South over the past 30 years, especially how the Republicans have made such advances here," she said.

Glen Browder wants to force the Defense Department to pay for an experimental treatment for veterans afflicted with Gulf War Syndrome.

Rep. Browder, D-Jacksonville, has introduced a bill requiring the Pentagon to release $3.4 million for the antibiotic treatment. The money was originally appropriated by Congress in 1994 for the research by Dr. Edward Hyman, a doctor from New Orleans. The Defense Department, which has blamed many of the reported illnesses from the Persian Gulf War on stress, has blocked release of the money.

Defense officials say Dr. Hyman's work doesn't meet the military's criteria for medical research. "I want the veterans who seek Dr. Hyman's treatments to have the opportunity to get them." Dr. Hyman has treated 10 veterans suffering from illnesses thought to be the result of service in the 1991 gulf war. About half the veterans treated were from a Naval Reserve unit with headquarters in Huntsville, and all showed some improvement initially. Some veterans suffered relapses.

Dr. Hyman said treatments needed to be longer and more intense. He has worked without pay, and veterans have had to pay thousands of dollars for medication. Dr. Hyman said the money is desperately needed to continue the research.
