Sunday Montgomery Advertiser COLLEGE FOOTBALL November 6, 1994 3C By HuntArchbold 11 ADVERTISER STAFF WRITER Tough loss: Cincinnati comes from behind late to beat the Trojans 28-24 for the Bearcats' first win of the season breaking a string of 16 consecutive quarters in which Troy State had scored. Troy State's best opportunity for points in the first 15 minutes came on its second drive when Ollie Quass hooked a 33-yard field goal wide left. But the Trojans began finishing off drives with points in the second quarter. Aided by 20 yards in facemask penalties, the Trojans marched 91 yards in 11 plays for their first touchdown of the game. Arrid Gregory took an option pitch right, picked up a pancake block from fullback Derrick Washington, and scooted into the end zone from 5 yards.

Quass booted the extra point to tie the game at 7-7 with 7:58 left before halftime. A few minutes later the Trojans had their first lead of the game. Troy State linebacker Patrick Epkins stripped Bearcat tailback Craedel Kimbrough of the football and lllya Lawrence was there for the recovery at the 50. One play later, Roweil went uniouched around the right end and down the sideline for a 48-yard touchdown to put the Trojans up 14-7. The Bearcats came right back behind the arm of Vibberts.

The junior quarterback was 3-for-3 for 43 yards as he directed a 9-play. 74-yard touchdown drive. Smith scored around left end from 10 yards out to tie the game, 14-14 with 1:29 left in the half. "We didn't stop them from making big plays and that's been hurting us all year," Walker said. The Trojans came right back with a 13-play, 80-yard drive to regain the lead. The score came on a 2-yard plunge by Maxwell to give the Trojans a 24-21 lead with 1 1:59 left in the game. The Trojans complete a four-game road stretch next Saturday when they travel to Lorman, to take on Alcorn State. The Bearcats are also on the road as the play at defending Big 10 champion Wisconsin.

"Troy State is a fine football team and perhaps they will win the rest of their games.

Randolph Lovejoy ran 16 times for 1 1 1 yards and Rowell added another 108 yards on 13 carries. "It's disappointing to us," Rowell said. "We just didn't play good enough to win. We made too many mistakes and it cost us. I never got it tucked on the fumble." The Cincinnati offense, which produced a season-best 472 yards of offense, made the Trojans pay for that untimely drop by Rowell.

Quarterback Eric Vibberts was 14-of-18 passing for 219 yards and one score on the day. His main target was Robert Tate, who caught eight passes for 165 yards and a score. Minter had suspended four Bearcats before the game for disciplinary reasons, including Cincinnati's top two receivers. "He came through like a true champion," Minter said of Tate, Samford's 9-yard line with three minutes left in the game, ending a possible game-winning drive. Moore completed 28 of 44 passes for 417 yards and three TDs.
