COLLEGE FOOTBALL 6F Press Sun-Bulletin Sunday, October 17, 1999 A 0 kcksbur 1 For ack nig BY JOSEPH WHITE Associated Press BLACKSBURG, Va. Virginia Tech hung the biggest shutout ever on a ranked team on Saturday night. Despite being ranked No. 4, even the unbeaten Hokies were surprised at the ease of their record-setting "I never imagined this," said receiver Andre Davis, shaking his head with a big smile. "It should erase the doubts.

Some people may still be doubtful a little bit, but Syracuse was the 16th-ranked team in the nation. To beat a ranked team in 1936. The previous largest shutout was No. 1 Army's 61-0 victory over No. 6 Penn State in 1945.

The largest losing margin for a ranked team is 63 points No. 11 Texas was beaten 66-3 by unranked UCLA in 1997, "Would you be embarrassed when you get beat this bad?" SU guard Frank Giufre said. "Of course, we are." Virginia Tech (6-0 overall, 2-0 Big East) continued its best run since 1967 and got its biggest victory margin since a 73-0 victory over Catholic in 1922. The defense did much of the damage, scoring two touchdowns and allowing Syracuse just three first downs until the second-stringers took over in fourth quarter. The Orangemen gained just 120 yards against the Hokies, who are allowing an average of eight points per game.

Juking and swiveling to turn losses into big plays, Hokies freshman quarterback Michael Vick was 8-for-16 for 135 yards and one touchdown. In his last three games, Vick is 26 of 37 for 605 yards with six touchdowns and no interceptions. It was humiliating for the Orangemen (5-2, 2-1), who matched a 62-0 loss at Princeton in 1912. "Sometimes when you're not playing well and things go wrong, it gets to be a snowball type of thing," coach Paul Pasqualoni said. "And that's what happened tonight." Syracuse has been outscored 169-34 in its last four trips to Blacksburg.

Everything turned ugly for Syracuse in the second half, when the defense seemed to give up as Shy-rone Stith rambled for long runs up the middle. Punter Mike Shafer fumbled two snaps, a fumble was lost on a kickoff return and a personal foul penalty killed a drive after a rare first down. Pasqualoni stuck to his quarterback rotation of Madei Williams and Troy Nunes and even let WORST SU LOSSES The loss was the worst in SU history since 1 91 2, when the Orangemen bowed to Princeton, 62-0. The only three more lopsided defeats came before the turn of the century 75-0 to Union and 68-0 to Cornell in 1 891 then 66-0 to Union in 1 893. Most recent worst losses were 63-7 at Nebraska, Oct.

It was the largest shutout loss by a ranked team in the history of The Associated Press poll, which began tailback Dee Brown handle some snaps but nothing any of them could do was effective. Williams and Nunes combined for six completions on 22 attempts for 43 yards with two interceptions. Tech cornerback Anthony Midget, who punished the Syracuse receivers with big hits, created the first touchdown when he poked the ball away from Quinton Spotwood after a completed pass.

Cory Bird scooped it up just before it hit the grass and ran 26 yards down the sideline to make it 7-0. Taking the ball on punts, the Hokies marched downfield for touchdowns on their next three drives. 18 Ohio State was a rout, plain and simple. I lad the Nitta ny Lions not stubbed their toes nearly every time they moved inside the Buckeyes' 25-yard line, who knows how large the winning margin would have been? "We should have put 40 on the board," said fullback Mike Cer-imelem who caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Kevin Thompson on the game's opening possession. "We had two field goals blocked, we stopped ourselves inside their 25 all day." Then he pointed to his noggin: "Stupid head problems. We have to cut them out or it will catch up to us." Penn State Big Ten) wasn't about to be caught by Ohio State (4-3, 1-2), which managed only 11 first downs and 143 total yardswhile the Nittany Lions were rolling up 422, including 306 on the ground. Chris Daniels was on the receiving end of the combination, setting Big Ten records for receptions and receiving yardage as No. 20 Purdue upset No. 5 Michigan State 52-28 Saturday to knock the visiting Spartans from the undefeated list. Daniels had 21 catches for 301 yards and three touchdowns. That helped Drew Brees finish with a season-high 509 yards and five touchdowns.

Brees threw all five of his TD passes in the first half when Purdue (5-2, 2-2) opened a 35-14 lead. Daniels had 12 catches in the first half for 200 yards, with TD receptions of 51, 10 and 4 yards. Brees hit 40 of 57 attempts and ended the game just short of his career high of 522 yards. Daniels topped the record for receiving yards of 285 set by Thomas Lewis of Indiana in 1993. Michigan State had six turnovers and gave up five sacks.

"It was hard to be better than we were in the first half," Purdue coach Joe Tiller said. No. 9 Kansas St. 40, Utah St. 0: Joe Hall, a 300-pounder subbing for the injured David Allen, rushed for 195 yards and two touchdowns to lead Kansas State (6-0) past visiting Utah State (2-4).

Hall ran for 143 yards in the second half, including a 47-yard gallop after the Wildcats had taken a 26-0 lead. His 6-yard run with 4:08 left in the third period put Kansas State on top 19-0. Dayne, who had just 17 carries and sat out the second half, became the fourth player in Division I history to record four rushing seasons. The others are: Amos Lawrence of North Carolina, Tony Dorsett of Pittsburgh and Denvis Manns of New Mexico State. Dayne needs 697 yards in Wisconsin's final four games, or an average of 174.3 per game, to break Ricky Williams' major college rushing record. Jabari Holloway recovered Jarious Jackson's fumble in the end zone with 2:40 left to cap a 22-point comeback as Notre Dame beat Southern Cal on Saturday 25-24 to snap a three-game losing streak to the Trojans. Much like two weeks ago when they rallied from 16 down to beat Oklahoma, the Irish (4-3) seemed out of it after David Newbury hit a 29-yard field goal to put the Trojans (3-3) up 24-3 on the first drive of the second half. But then Notre Dame began its biggest comeback since a 35-34 win over Houston in the 1979 Cotton Bowl.

On the winning play, Jackson dropped back to pass at the USC 18. He scrambled up the middle and was hit at the 1, fumbling into the end zone where Holloway came up with it. 10 times for 85 yards and Kevin Thompson fumbled in the end zone to hand the Buckeyes their only TD of the game. "We were in scoring position and then our own carelessness and bad plays took us right out of it," Paterno said. "There was absolutely no reason for (the blocked field goals).

That could have cost us the game." But the Lions' best defensive effort of the season made sure Ohio State and quarterback Steve Bel-lisari couldn't take advantage. Bel-lisari ran for his life as the Beaver Stadium crowd of 97,007 roared in approval. Bellisari was sacked eight times 27z credited to linebacker La Var Arrington and was 7-f or-21 for 78 yards and an interception. Penn State led 13-3 with 3:40 left in the half, but was backed up to its own 6 when Thompson was slammed from behind by linebacker Na'il Diggs and fumbled, with free safety Gary Berry recovering in the end zone for a touchdown. Thompson sustained a slightly separated right shoulder and sat out the rest of the game.

With Rashard Casey running the offense in the second half, Penn State scored on its first possession to take a 20-10 lead. Casey, who has alternated with Thompson all year, capped a seven-play, 62-yard drive with a 5-yard TD run on a perfectly executed bootleg, faking two handoffs, putting the ball on his hip and rolling left past a baffled Buckeyes defense. Casey was 11 of 15 for 109 yards. Travis Forney, who had field goals blocked in the first and third quarters, converted from 38, 39 and 28 yards, the final one coming early in the fourth quarter.
