Don't criticize them in public. On this last point, the former Detroit Tiger slugger said As a ball player, I often felt the front office executives used poor judgment in knocking their own players publicly. To me they did this for only one reason as a bludgeon when it came to bargain ing. "I think this is a horrible way to try to save a little on salaries HOW MUCH And speaking of that mysterious process of doping out how much a player is worth, he went on: "We (the new management) talk about the player's personality, his years of service and his potential for the coming season.

We try to give him what we think will sat isfy him. "There's an old baseball theory, 'never cut a ball player. Trade him I don't agree. Neither do I agree with the old St Louis Cardinals theory, (keep the players hungry). I want our players satisfied.

But I. don't want them oversatisfied. "Of course, it's important not to make a player disgruntled over his salary. If I have any disgruntled players I'll want to get rid of them." EYES OPENED Greenberg said his eyes have been "opened" considerably since he hung up his glove and settled behind a desk. "As a player," he said, "I felt there was a line call it coldness between the playing field and the front office.

I want to eliminate that line if I possibly can. There really isn't any coldness. The executives are just as strong hero worshippers as the paying fans. We want the players to come to us with their problems. Maybe we can help them in their personal affairs.

Wed certainly like to try." Your Host lugged 118 pounds today in the Derby.

But it was not the time that made the winner's performance such a spectacular one. It was the smooth manner in which he took the lead and held it despite the best efforts of the 10 top colts and a illy to catch him. STARTS FROM 11 Staring from No. 11 post post tion. Your Host, had to get enough lead to cut to the rail before he could really settle down to the business of running away from the field.

For an instant. Feudal had a neck margin on him at the start but that was all. Before they had gone an eighth, Your Host was on top and on the rail where Longden wanted to put him. Then the plain-looking colt really started running. thev went around the first turn, he was a length and a half on top.

Feudal was a length be hind him and tnen came iiawiey and' Deep Blue. Longden seemed just to cluck Your Host along as they went Into the backstretch. The colt first opened up a lead of two lengtns and then three lengths, running with long, easy strides that ate up the track. FEUDAL THREATENS But the swift Feudal stayed right there while Great Circle came up into third place and Hawley clung to fourth. Sturdy One was far off the pace at that point.

Going around the last turn, Your Host kept his three-length lead and lost none of his speed despite setting the pace on top. By that time, Feudal was fading and it looked like Great Circle would have the distinction of running second to Your Host But flying along the inside rail came Sturdy One, pulling past horse after horse as Ralph Neves took aim on the front-running Your Host. Longden heard the approaching hoofbeats and about a hundred yards from the wire he smacked Yur Host lightly to remind him th race was not won. iF 15 Roundt of FUN With Youhg Boys NO CHARGE AND FRIENDS' INVITED The Leader Leads Again in the Field of 0.
