110 39 38 Bradley'i C. 139 Brit N'lUrop. 69 r.6 By NORMAN SHRAPNEL "WHAT ABOUT tb, patients?" The cry 'from a nurse in the public gallery yesterday, when the Commons was deep in a debate about the welfare of ponies. It made a lively unofficial interlude, and the uniformed chuckers-out were quickly on the job but not before a clamorous flock of Nightingales, high above the heads of the MPs, had managed to stage quite a demo. Neither patients, nor ponies are very good at' speaking up for but the nurses were determined to prove that they can.

It all happened very suddenly, about the time MPs were beginning to think of lunch anything buf meat, which too often gets served across the Channel-Some of them were anxious to improve the frequently dire conditions under which British ponies are exported. The nurses were equally resolved to improve their: own working conditions in hospitals. Up the nurses The bugle call from the public gallery galvanised half a dozen of. them into action. "Listen to the nurses they want some support," another shouted.

Correctly anticipating a counter-atttack. they cleverly linked arms along a back row of the gallery. One attendant ragged at the protesting rank from end, another from the other end. This strategy enabled the angry girls to hold their position for quite'a time. Finally, still in fall voice, they were removed.

The MPs, slightly shaken, proceeded with their debate. They 'had it easy. Holding their horses was one' thing. Holding those nurses, as the attendants had discovered, was a tougher proposition. -03 0f3 making the final prosecution speech in the double murder aiaaen 10 31 hacle 869 LulT i Law.

Sir Gervais Tennyson d'Eyncourt, chairman, states in his annual report that the net profit for the year ended September '30 was 111,679, made possible by the "extremely good" investment climate for much of the financial year. Last year he had reported on the conversion of three investment trusts Reserves Securities, Cock-burn, and Kelvin into London and Wall Street units. Due to this transaction, profits had risen exceptionally from 1 to 191,862, and he had said that tne group did not expect to match the profit in the year just ended. The dividend this time amounts to 25 per cent of the share capital as increased by a 200 per cent bonus issue, compared with 110 per cent paid last time on the smaller capital. Group turnover the year the value of units sold amounted to 8.407.051 Bairns-Wear is doing better Errtti- Cap Priority xt Priority lllrlt Ino Pr Hirli I Scot.

Protective clothing would seem to be the cheapest and simplest answer to the problem, but according to Dr Peter J. Taylor, of the University of London, and consultant at Guy's Hospital, many men are reluctant to use special clothing, even when it is provided, because it is thought to be cissy."
