The Cash Prize League made a rather auspicious start yesterday at Celtle Park upon the occasion of the Initial athletic meet held under its auspices. Satisfactory to the promoters who were able to pay the competitors what they said was coming to them, and equally so to the thousand and one spectators who witnessed a good foot race, which waa won by that sterling Swedish pedestrian, Uusta LJungstrom in the fine time of 2-6. AJ Raines of New York was second, while J.

Kern, and FY Panzerl finished third and fourth respectively. Among tu-e who started and fell by the wayside wtre V. Kolhemainen. Matt Maloney, and Carl Nlemlnen. Of the others were Ed Touhey, J.

P. CDrtacoll. and P. a lam bra. The conditions not permit of any preliminaries after the men came out on the field, and they were promptly sent away on their Journey by La son Robertson with a great scramble ensuing for the position of pacemaker.

As to who thl would be was soon set at rest when Vu f-mbra went up the back Mretch leading by the first quarter In o-o. Boon arter this be was among the tallenders, and the half showed LJungstrom In the van with the time At this stage Raines had dropped In behind the Swede, who In turn led Maloney, Kolhemainen, and Paniaii as named. At the mile, passed by Raines In 5:06 8-3, Kolhemainen waa second and the others close up. Touhey managed to get by In 8:23. The Finn.

Kolhemainen worked hla way to the front at one itnd an eighth miles and he carried tbe leaders along at a merry clip for three lups, whereupon Raines took up the work sailing by the 2-mlle mark In 10:19 4-5, ten yards ahead of LJungstrom. who waa aligned with the Finn. Matt Maloney was 100 yards back at this point, leading Nlemlnen and Panrerl by a comfortable margin. Early In the next mile the Swede made his way to the front, and led past the third mile post In 16:02 1-5 with the Finn and Raines a stride behind him. This trio was fast leaving the rest of the field, and it was quite apparent that the winner was to come out of the three.

At four miles the order was Kolhemainen. Raines, and LJui.gstrom with the rest of the field spreadeagled. and the time, The hardy little Finn kept up his pace by the 5-rrille mark by which he led in 27:02 with Raines and the Swede In close pursuit. Just before reaching this period Maloney stopped. The Finn continued to command up to the five and a half miles where Raines went to the front passing the six miles in 32:34 after having lapped Nlemlnen a quarter of a mile before.

S8KXI2-B was the 7-mile time with the order Raines, LJungstrom. and Kolhemainen. the latter, however, being fifty yards In the wake of the other pair. From that point on the race proved a duel between Raines and LJungstrom with that the order to the last eighth of a mile. Kolhemainen quit at eight miles, and this left the third man 1.O00 yards to the bad of the leaders.

With a half mile to go, Raines cut loose a great sprint, and opened up a gap of tyenty-five yards on the 8wede, but he was unable to maintain his pace and came back. With an eighth of a mile to go the Swede uncorked his final effort and practically unchallenged was enabled to win by thirty yards in 1:05:37 2-ri. Raines was seven-eighths of a mile ahead of Kern, and near-lv a mile to the arood of Panzerl. The distance covered in the hour was 10 miles, 1,690 yards. Convent A.
