THE SUNDAY ADVERTISER C4 Lindell To Assist Islander Manager Noren By FERD BORSCH SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. The Hawaii Islanders open their second baseball spring training season today with Returnees include pitcher Hank Mason, infielder Kenny Toothman, and outfielders Carlos Bernier and Bobby Balcena. Infielder Ray Webster, a fifth "oldtimer," is to report in early April after completing an active duty stint in the Army. TWO PITCHERS well known to island fans also have hotel reservations here Tom Swayne and Bill Ni- shita. Swayne, who toiled for, Subpac last season, was one of the first arrivals.

However, the exercises will be just loosening up. Each of the pitchers will work about five minutes on the mound.

The same applies to the hitters at the plate. It'll be a once-over-lightly session to "get the feel" of things. NOREN' WILL be assisted by former New York Yankee outfielder-pitcher Johnny Lin- dell for at least the first week of training. Lindell, one of the few .300 hitters in the war years, is now a combination coach-scout-goodwill man for the Los Angeles Angels. As of last night, the Islander roster was as follows: Pitchers Hank Mason, Tom Swayne, Phil Paine, Bill Nishita, Don Kaiser, Jerry Lock, Fred Rick, Archie White, Don McLeod, R.

G. Smith, Gene Bacque, Phil Kliewer, Dave Reed, Dick Eagan, Ron Boone and Bill Moss. Catchers Charlie White and Ramon Alston. Infieldrrs Hap Richie, Marv Williams, Ken Tooth-man, Bill Davidson, Maury Lerner, Ossie Alvarez and Norma Manning. Outfielders Carlos Bern lor, Stan Papys, Kerry Buck-ner and Walt O'Neill.

Of the newly acquired pitchers, both Kaiser and Smith have seen action in the majors. Kaiser broke in with the Chicago Cubs and Smith graduated to Pittsburgh after a successful stint with the old San Francisco Seals. And Manager Noren, who lost six pounds while train ing with the Los Angeles Angels last week, now wieghs ia at a trim 190 and is available for duty at first or in the outfield. The Angels, incidentally, also dispatched three more players to the Islander camp yesterday on a temporary basis. They are catchers Dav Marsden and Ron O'Shieldi and first baseman Frank Mango.

By ANDREW MITSUKADO To Coach Jack Herbertson and his Kamehameha School basketball team our congratulations! Winning the State high school championship was a tremendous accomplishment.

They never became discouraged by adversity which dogged them persistently.

Three times during the season, the Warriors lost to Punahou. They lost a heartbreaker to the Buffanblus in the finals of their own tournament, 54-53. The Warriors lost to Roosevelt, 36-34.

The Warriors took their lumps. However, they never quit. The Warriors vowed solemnly to do better in the state championship tourney in Hilo. Their determination and fortitude were justly rewarded when they fought their way to the finals and nipped the Puns in the all-important championship game. It was one of the greatest comebacks in the history of interscholastic sports in Hawaii.

"This Punahou team is a championship team in every he concluded. We agree that Punahou's ILH championship team is one of the fightingest, come-from-behind aggregations in the history of the sport here. Our congratulations to the Buffanblus, and also to the Kamehameha Warriors for their stunning State tournament victory over a Punahou team that had beaten them three times previously. A Great Team El fort By KENNY HAINA When Kamehameha won the 1962 State basketball championship in Hilo last weekend, the Warriors became the first runnerup team to do so. In fact, it was the first time Kam has ever won an inter-island title since the first tournament was played in 1926.

At that time, it was known as the Interscholastic Basketball Tournament. Coach Jack Herbertson's Warriors finished second to Punahou in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu race this season and had already lost three times to the Buffanblus. Hence, they were underdogs again in the state finals. Incidentally, Kam's only ILH title was achieved in 1945. The Warriors had to share the 1959 championship with Farrington but lost the big prize in the f' state finals to the Governors, 48-37.

I St. Louis High School's Cru saders defeated Farrington and Iolani in a triangular track and field meet yesterday afternoon at the St. Louis oval. Coach Bill Mayhew's Crusaders amassed points to Iolani's 29 and Farring-ton's 27 in the open division. In the novice class St.

Louis scored 56 to 41 for the Governors and 18 for the Red Raiders. THE MEET was shifted from Farrington to St. Louis due to muddy track conditions at the Governors' field. George Simao of St. Louis turned in his second best mile run of 4:50.2 as teammates Ben Abihai clocked 4:58.4 and Ronald Staszkow 4:58.5.

Simao also won the 880 in 2:05.8, out-stepping teammate Brian Clarke, ho earlier had won th 440 in 53.9 sec. Herbertson hailed the 1962 victory tfjtf as one of the greatest team enons I've ever seen." Haina "I thought we were beaten when we trailed by 11 points in the last five minutes of the game. But our boys still felt they could win despite those three defeats and they proved it.

They really amazed me," Herbertson added. Herbertson, who just completed his eighth season at Kam, has the makings of another championship squad. Three of his starters are returning John Torres, Sam Harris and Rockne Freitas. In addition, there's 6-4 Clay Cockett who did a tremendous job filling in for George Manu when the latter suffered a wrenched ankle in the third quarter of the title game. Of course, Sam Harris proved to be the man of the hour last Saturday with his after-the-game free throw that clinched victory.

Punahou, incidentally, was also seeking its first inter-island title and a 1962 sweep of all basketball honors. II.
