7s per line from an NBC man called Edwin Newman. This commentary, delivered in a singularly irritating voice, was slanted in the extreme, dodged issues like Vietnam, and attributed Machiavellian motives to Khrushchev whenever possible. It was, the sort of commentary that would force any fair-hearted citzen to rush out at the nearest opportunity and vote the straight party ticket Of course, Khrushchev was such a large and important and colourful character that even the dreadful hack earnestness of this NBC film could not kill him completely But overall it was a programme calculated to set one's teeth on edge. First, because of the blind polemics of the men behind it in the NBC, and secondly, and more importantly, because of the gross insensi-tivitv of our own BBC to put on, and put on with fanfare and epilogue, such a piece of neo-McCarthyite propaganda. One could list the oversights 'of the film, perhaps it would appear more reasonable to do this, but tTIere were so many of them.

One would have preferred to hear them discussed on "Twenty-four Hours." As it was, there was no balance, let alone historical objectivity and detachment KHRUSHCHEV IN EXILE," the much publicised American NBC scoop film on the Russian ex-leader, was shown on BBC-1 last night, and it was without a doubt the phoneyist documentary in a long lime. What we were supposed to enjoy about the programme was that the film of Khrushchev walking around his daclia and his tape-recorded conversation were taken without the permission of the Russian authorities and then smuggled out of Russia. This was the bait that the BBC used to get us to watch. Later we saw the producer, Lucy Jarvis, on Twenty-four Hours talking to Cliff Michelmore about this film which, we kept being told, was a remarkable feat." (The point of the programme, however, was not the fact that the film had been taken behind the Russian authorities' back and smuggled out but the content And what we saw was just some footage of Khrushchev, very old and tired (just as old and tired as Eisenhower or Truman), wandering around his garden and his dacha. Added to this (which one assumes was the "smuggled" film) was a lot of old newsreel film and still photographs intercut by commentary BGGREE and A still from Masitkt Kobayashi's KwaidanS New films JOHN MeCABE and RAFAEL OROZCO at the Cheltenham Festival by Gerald Lamer available in SESSION 196768 at the proposed Polytechnic formed from NORTH STAFFORDSHIRE COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY STAFFORDSHIRE COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY STOKE-ON-TRENT COLLEGE OF ART imaginative variation was for some reason omitted last night.

The most pleasing impression left by the work is still the complete aptness of its piano writing, but this time the treatment of the theme seemed more imaginative and more likeable. John McCabe in his recital gave the first public performance of a new work of his, a Fantasy on a Theme of Liszt, which quotes the theme (from the "Faust" symphony) on the title page but not, alas, in the work itself. What'McCabe actually did with it was to make a 12-note row out of it and base his Fantasy on the row, not on the theme in its' original' rhythmic shape. This caused certfifin bafflement at first among those who. like me, expected the conventional Fantasy i-treatment So the impression made this first hearing was one of interesting, well varied, and superbly, written episodes succeeding each otter or being xecapitu- 5 lated with apparent It also well played; of course, as' were -two" Haydn works in the same, programma'and the three 'finely organised miniatures by Hugh Wood.

THE CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL offered two piano recitals yesterday. John McCabe gave the first one in the town hall at midday, and the second was given there in the evening by Rafael Orozco, the young Spaniard who won the Leeds piano competition last year. There was nothing new in this latter recital but it was an exciting performance, played with continued intensity and, incidentally, to the festival's second full house this year. The centrepiece was a powerful, mature, and unusually coherent interpretation of Liszt's Sonata in minor. There was no hint of physical or expressive weakness in the earlier stages of the work and yet the pianist wisely had enough in reserve to meet the colossal demands of the climax, even sustaining tbe tension in the intellectually necessary but unfairly undramatic epilogue which follows it.

The single contemporary work in his programme was John Ogdon's Theme and Variations, which was first performed at last year's festival. Mr Orozco's interpretation was much more natural and persuasive than -Vladimir Ashkenazy's had been on that occasion, in spite of the fact that tbe most the defeated clan. As in the first episode, Kobayashi skilfully varies the pace, interchanging moments of vigorous comedy with some really stunning compositions. This episode alone makes Kwaidan a film to be seen, and confirms, if confirmation were needed, that for sheer visual artistry the best Japanese cinema is still unrivalled. With "Mademoiselle" Tony Richardson directed Jeanne Moreau1 in a script by Genet.

The Sailor from Gibraltar (London Pavilion) finds him again directing Jeanne Moreau, this time with a script adapted from a Marguerite Duras novel. It is a very curious affair. Ian Bannen plays an English tourist who is bored by his" companion's (Vanessa Redgrave) insufferable enthusiasm for the sights of Florence and seeks solace in the person of the owner of a luxury yacht, an impassioned lady (Jeanne Moreau) who spends her days sailing round the Mediterranean like some contemporary Ulysses in search of a sailor she once loved. After climbing the rigging to roll off a catalogue of her previous lovers to the mesmerised Mr Bannen. the good lady sets sail for a Greek island.

Next port of call is where we encounter one Louis of Mozambique (Orson Welles, no less, complete with fez and pyjama robe) who reports that the sailor mav be in Ethiopia. So off they go, escorted into the hinterland by white hunter Hugh Griffith, and watched closely by assorted groups of puzzled natives. When a tall Ethiopian tribeswoman seems to have something to iav about the missing tar, Miss Moreau offers her a cigarette. But by this time her heart is no longer in the quest, and after a return trip to Alexandria and a brief visit to an Arab movie she ends up in the Englishman's arms. It sounds absurd, and it is.

The Further Perils of Laurel and Hardy (Rialto) is another Robert Youngson compilation of excerpts from films of the twenties (originally silent, hut here embroidered with irritating sound effects and a trashy score). Like all comics. Laurel and Hardy are only as good as their material, and some of the material here is below par. But the film is interesting as a record of the pair's early career. by DAVID WILSON THERE aren't likely to be many films this year as visually magnificent as Masaki Kobayasiii's Kwaldan (Cameo Poly), but there is more, to a film than the way it looks and Kwaidan (or Ghost Stories is much more than a feast for the eyes.

Adapted from a collection of supernatural stories by Lafcadio Hearn, Kobayashi's film is a three-part exercise in the bizarre The first episode tells of a young samurai who. reduced to poverty, divorces his wife and marries into nobility. Years later, unhappy and still haunted by the memory of his first wife, he returns to find her just as he harl remembered or so it seems. What strikes one immediately about this episode are the subtly contrasted shifts of mood, from the unearthly stillness of the forest with its muted greens suffused with shafts of light, to the sudden, sharp close-up of the samurai's arrows shattering a target. The second episode is more of a trifle, the tale of a nobleman's guard who swallows a reflection he sees in his bowl of tea and then finds himself faced by a trio of the offended soul's retainers.

The story is developed with some irony, but the subject is slight and it is best taken as an oltegro preparing the way for the longer and much more interesting finale Visually, this final episode is astonishing. It begins with a sort of animated Bayeux tapestry, a medieval naval hattle between two samurai clans enacted as a stylised, Kabuki-like pageant, intercut with a richly painted tableau of the event and backed by a chanted narration. The story then moves on several centuries to describe how a blind novice monk is summoned by the silvery phantom of one of the fallen warriors to recite the history of the battle before the court of Full time and sandwich courses leading to Degrees and Higher National Dioflomas in ART and DESIGN BUSINESS STUDIES CERAMICS CHEMISTRY COMPUTING ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING ELECTRO-MECHANICAL ENGINEERING MECHANICAL ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT MINING PHYSICS Post Graduate Courses are also available and suitably qualified persons can be registered for higher degrees. The, second) i rather too long' half shows parents' it odds a couple of well heeled friends who sincerely believe that they can act as comforters and 'ought to do so, even if it means puncturing the levity with which the idiot's father, particularly, shores' up his sanity.

This is where euthanasia comes into it and, also the grandmother who rather 'late in the evening begins to shed on -why th'3-poor facetious the way he Too' late Yet.it makes" for a real bond of sympathy with' 'this hitherto brave but maddening couple, of, victims, she with her substitute "pets, and mothering, he with his own arrested.C mother-dominated evasiveness. The end -is) comfort either. The 'writing with its sharp-" scorn-'and': sheer music hall knockabout vulgarity, of phrase is continuously stops a bit short-but-iti-i; a poster-colour style jumps up strongly. Joe (who once replaced "Jonathan Va Miller in Beyond the Fringe is supeTb as the jokey, show-off, broken-hearted clown' -v Zena Walker, the wife, seems -perfeeqy inside the author's intentions. There are-t from Joan Hickson' especially as" the awful T-, gran," and Phyllida Law and John Carson some cautionary portraits of wellwishersv Michael Blakemore makes what migmVseeni on paper, a very tasteless affair into penetrating comedy of human inadequacy.

But it is not for the squeamish what is? 1FIND myself writing with surprise that "A Day in the Death of Joe Egg" by Peter Nichols at the Comedy seems to me witty, enjoyable, and oflen really -very touching, because on the face, the blank face of it, it is nothing less than a sick comedy made out of such impermissible material as a couple with a 10-year-old retarded, helpless spastic child. Those who can't even face the idea of a comic treatment of such a theme had better stay away altogether. For them, Maugham's The Sacred Flame and its dignified euthenasia is the proper way to handle such things. But Mr Nichols writes with such insight and such a. gift for what the theatre can do that he succeeds, beyond a point I would have thought possible, in forcing as to see the sad story through the refractions of the parents' own fatuous, desperate ludicrous courage.

Anybody who knows 'parents with this kind of cross hear will recognise the truth of this the pathos of their almost lunatic refusal 1o. admit that their first born is scarcely more than a broken doll, to tend which all real life must be sacrificed. The first half is done in a mixture of styles, some like' recitations in a pierrot show, some like monologues which recalled Ruth Draper (of all people), some sketches or flash-backs. We see the parents in their day-to-day struggle but, we also see them re-enacting the ghastly foregone interviews with the obtuse doctor, the fatuous padre, the Viennese brain specialist (who gets his appropriate quote from the band from "Die Fledermaus We even ACIS AND GALATEA at Sadler's Wells by Edward Greenfield Price as Galatea and Robert Tear the right manner of a picturesque entertainment." At Aldeburgh, when the piece was given on its own, I remember being charmed, but last night the staging kept getting in the way of the music. It is after all such wonderful music, a collection of Handelian "hit" numbers such as even he rarely produced in a single work.

One trouble last night was that too many of James Lockhart's speeds were on the fast side, and the chorus, never very secure, tended to trip over itself in a not-very-Augustan way. Beautiful singing from Margaret PAINTING the lily was always an Augustan habit, and there is much to be said for the high-flown ways of the English Opera Group in its Handel-Mozart double-bill, given last night as the latest offering in its Sadler's Wells season. This production of Handel's "Acis and Galatea" was first seen at the Aldeburgh Festival last year, and again the Watteu-like sets of Henry Bardon and heavily stylised production of John Copley are very much in LEGAL NOTICES 9s per line as Acis. Victor Godfrey, a fine figure of a Polyphemus, tended to swallow his voice too much. Lockhart's briskness was much better suited to Mozart, when at the end of what had come to seem a rather long evening we turned in farcical epilogue to "The Impresario." Here the lily-painting was again elaborate, an English adaptation by Geoffrey Dunn.

Again Margaret Price led the field with Jenifer Eddy a very worthy rival and Francis Egerton a vigorously agitated impresario. Pretty sets, again by Henry Bardon.
