Tornadoes ripped through the South for the second time this week, killing eight people, wrecking historic neighborhoods and knocking down Chelsea Clinton's childhood tree-house. One of Little Rock's oldest areas, the 100-year-old Quapaw Quarter, was sliced in half by a twister that killed three people Thursday night. A tornado also hit the historic district of Clarksville.Tenn., early Friday, leaving gaping holes in buildings like the 121-year-old courthouse. "It looks like somebody walked through with a broom and knocked over whatever was loose enough to knock down," said Fred Dye, photo editor at The Leaf-Chronicle of Clarksville, whose building was heavily damaged.

Historic buildings were and Arkansas, i22 The Little Rock storm knocked over trees at the Governor's Mansion, where Bill Clinton once lived. He plans to visit Arkansas on Sunday. One of the trees blown down contained Chelsea Clinton's tree-house from the years when her father was governor. "The fact that the Governor's Mansion where Hillary and I raised Chelsea for 12 years was actually in the path of the storm made it all the more real to me," Clinton said.

"We are deeply committed to doing everything we can to help the people there recover." A supermarket near the mansion crumbled beneath the storm's winds, killing the pharmacist and leaving residents of the Quapaw Quarter without one of the few major businesses remaining in the area. "It's going to affect a lot of people. A lot of people don't have transportation or cars to get them where they need," Diana Howley said. "My mother is one. If we weren't here, she wouldn't be able to get where she needs." Four other people were killed in White County, outside the capital.

In hard-hit Beebe, residents were tense as police held them back from seeing the damage. After pounding Arkansas, the storm moved into Tennessee, killing a woman west of Nashville when she went outside to get her dogs. The state was still trying to recover from storms that killed nine people on Sunday. In Clarksville, northwest of Nashville, a tornado cut off power to 25,000. It ripped apart a five-block area, tore through the center of Austin Peay State University and skipped into a residential neighborhood.

The university's clock tower was blown over, 100-year-old magnolia trees toppled, and the 123-year-old Archwood House, which used to be the president's home but now holds offices, was destroyed. "I lived in Southern California. 1 I lived through earthquakes. I've never seen anything like this," President Sal Rivella said. A young man was convicted of murder Friday for beating, kicking and stomping to death an 81 -year-old woman who had criticized him for singing a rap song with vulgar lyrics. Victor Brancaccio, 21, could get life in prison in the 1993 slaying of Mollie Mae Frazier.

Because he was 16 at the time, he cannot get the death penalty. Brancaccio conceded he killed the woman, but his lawyers argued that brain damage, depression and a psychiatric drug rendered him legally insane at the time. Mrs. Frazier, a neighbor, had criticized him for rapping the lyrics of the Dr. Dre song Stranded on Death Row as he walked down the street.

He beat Mrs. Frazier, jumped on her rib cage and bashed her skull with a toy gun, leaving her to die in a vacant lot. He returned the next day to spray paint and burn the body. Prosecutors argued that Brancaccio was a rebellious boy with a history of violence who was angry at his mother and took it out on Mrs. Frazier.

It was the second time Brancaccio was convicted of kidnapping and murder in the case. In 1995 he was sentenced to life in prison, but an appeals court ordered a new trial because the judge did not specifically tell jurors they could consider whether the endings 798-1151 798-1186 334-2132 432-7480 687-0648 any clearance athletic footwear or Inline skate 1 item nr cnuDon oer customer.
