He said, however, that details must be worked out "because it would mark a climax to his 50th year of football coaching. It will have to be taken up with the regents." College of the Pacific will have an open date In mid-December, with the last game scheduled for Dec. 28, which would make time available for the proposed game.

Hawaii's "Poi Bowl" which received due recognition on the Mainland for the first time this year, is no more.

Students and officials of the University favor such a change figuring that it is more appropriate since people of the Mainland associate pineapples with the Islands. It was the writer who tacked the monicker "Hawaii's Poi Bowl" classic on this annual New Year's Day intersectional joust between the University of Hawaii and a Pacific Coast Conference eleven about five years ago. My idea in naming our New Year's battle was strictly to move in on the vast publicity devoted to the various "bowl" games throughout the nation and the "Poi Bowl" struck me as a catchy nickname. The University immediately accepted it as the title for its annual clsssic. Yesterday, Graduate Manager Pump Searle of the University of Hawaii asked me both in letter and in a personal visit to The Advertiser if I had any objection to having my "Poi Bowl" supplanted by the "Pineapple Bowl." Probably it wouldn't have made much difference if I had (although Pump assured me that it would) but I could easily see the advantages of connecting the game with our second largest industry, and although I have long cherished my "Poi Bowl" and it was like giving up a pet, nevertheless I readily assented to the wish of the Associated Students.

The new name became official immediately and when the Bruins of UCLA arrive tomorrow on the Matsonia, pineapples vail play a prominent part In their official welcome. They will be presented with large juicy fruits off port and when they return to their headquarters at the Moana hotel following a trip over the Pali and around Koko head, they will be formally introduced to pineapple juice served from a large bowl in the lobby of the hotel. This ceremony will serve as the christening of the "Pineapple Bowl" classic. Graduate Manaser Pump Searle's letter asking the writer's kokua in changing the title of the annual classic and publicizing same, follows: Red McQueen, December 19, 1938 Sports Editor, The Advertiser. Dear Red: The Associated Students of the University of Hawaii, have requested me to ask you if it would be possible to have the name "Poi Bowl" which is significant of the New Year's football game changed to the "Pineapple Bowl" classic.

The students appreciate and fully realize that it- was you who conceived the name "Poi Bowl" a number of years ago in keeping with the practice on the Mainland of publicizing the New Year's Day football games. But the students feel that since you have been one of us and since you have the best interest of the Territory at heart, consenting to this change would do a lot to help the Associated Students in making their annual New Year's classic a real event and one that the people in the Territory will look forward to in years to come. If you would be so kind as to approve and announce this to the Dublic I know that we will be able to make this New Year's "Pineap asi in ih Charlie Lott, Marme mentor, TIenry hughes, e- twhile Oregon aeroy ior uaij. ui emu uc statJ collegs blocking back, and apie xo purcnase a muiuei ucKei illiam a fme end. has Within his means.
