B. Newsom, 68, retired Hartsville, S. farmer, died here from a heart attack after witnessing his son's stellar triumph. It was the second time that he had ever seen his Buck in a major league performance. He had been troubled with a heart ailment for several months.

Doctors said that his. death was not due to the excitement of the series and particularly his son's pitching victory. It could easily have occurred anywhere. When the sad news began to circulate in the elaborate Netherlands Plaza hotel here, headquarters for newsmen following the game, there was a disposition to discount it as another false alarm. Yesterday during the series opener, a report that the venerable Connie Mack, in Cincinnati for the series but not quite up to attending the first game, had passed on, sent newsmen scurrying to phones.

It proved false and Mister Mack, with all the bounce of a college athlete, put in an appearance for the second game. Newsom was not in uniform, naturally, for the second game, but announced that he would finish out the series; that it would be his dad's wish. Wide publicity was given to his father's tragic death. Newsmen particularly commended a masterpiece by Henry McLemore, which, incidentally, was written in my room. It follows: NEAR-PERFECT DEATH Ol Man Newsom's dead.

They held a little service for him in Cincinnati Thursday, and now his body's on the way to South Carolina, there to join the dust he had known and loved since he kicked it up, barefooted, as a kid. The boys who handle such things for the papers told how sad the service was, there in the little undertaking chapel, with only his family and a few friends to hear the good words said. They told of tears and sobs and hurt I'm wondering: if Ol Man Newsom didn't come mighty close to leaving" this earth In the perfect way. There can't be any denying that he left it happy. When Ol' Man Newsom left Hartsville, down there in South Carolina, a few days ago, to watch Bobo pitch for Dee-troit (that's what they call Detroit in Hartsville), he knew he wasn't coming back. When he got his grip all packed and called that station for the tenth time to see if the train was a-coming through on time, he spent an hour or two calling his friends. He called on 'em to say goodby. Up and down the little streets he walked, knocking on doors, ringing bells, and calling from the sidewalk to old pals rocking on the porch or lazy ins in the swing.

"Goodby," Ol Man Newsom said. "I'm going to Dee-troit to see Buck pitch." The friends all asked what was the meaning of the goodby. Shucks, Dee-troit was gonna win in four straight and Ol' Man Newsom would be back night before the week was out. But the goodby was said all the same. $6,000.
