lake fisherman I explained how to rig a fly line to get greater distance in casting To-day we will take up the matter of splicing the lines and shooting line to add to one's distance Tha first step In splicing a or size line to the heavier fly line is to scrape off the dressing of the enameled or oil finished line for a distance of inch to 4 inch at the end of each piece of line to be spliced When the dressing has been removed the braided silk that has been uncovered ia unraveled by picking it out with a pin The two unraveled ends are then waxed with harness wax which la quite sticky and the two ends sre then lapped for a distance of about l'4 Inchea A piece of A size silk thread ia then waxed and laid aside for wrapping the splice The lapped ends are now twisted one around the other and tied securely with a piece of cotton white string at a point near the center of the lapped portion This trick of tying the two ends with a string is to hold them together until the splice is wrapped part way after which tha string la removed With the two ends twisted and tied eo that they will not pull apart the wrapping of the splice le begun at one end just as a rod is wrapped The thread is wound tightly from one end to the other of the splice and finished with the Invisible knot Each turn of tbe silk thread around the splice should he touching the preceding turn If the in visible knot is not understood friend or a sporting goods dealer will explain how it is made When the splice ia completely irrapped it le varnished with rod varnish or epar varnish The splice will be only slightly larger than the remainder of the line and if the wrapping was done tightly it will be stronger then any other part of the line If a line baa been rigged as described in my last article and If the angler Is in a place where be wishes to make a long cast the line is extended until the forty feet of heavy line is out from the rod tip fifteen to twenty feet of the line is then stripped from the waa held Monday night in Richter Hall By HENRY M'LEMORE (United Freea Staff Correspondent) NEW YORK July Dr Joaeph Sheridan a reputable men of medicine attached to the New York State Boxing Commission stopped a bcut between Billy Pe-trolle and Bep Van Klaveren in the fourth round the other night and received a merciless panning from the prase for hie trouble Dr Sheridan made his decision when an examination of a cut above Van Klaveren'a eye convinced him that to subject tbe wound to further punishment might well result In serious injury for the Dutch scrapper as the bout had furnished red-hot action Dr 8herldan's act was greeted by (bouts from 15000 customers which to state It temperately were derisive This of course was no surpriae for with the possible exception of a boxer's manager Personally thie attitude gave me i pain The wsiters implied thev knew more than the doctor did when ihe truth is they wouldn't know the difference between fallen arches end drowning Some nf the more analytical writers pointed out that Dr Sheridan had examined Van Klaveren earlier In those balmy blokea who owe their round-heeled condition to the fact they were permitted to fight cn when In no
