Cl w0ke ekta 6-B Monday July 6 1964 THE FRESNO BEE Musson Retains Gold Cup In Detroit Hydro Races Barb McAlisterl Is 2nd Earley 5th In LA Meet 1 DETROIT Thanks jnerup with 1300 points a boat length ahead of Thompson Brow picked up 400 points for winning the heat in Miss Exide to place second Buddy Byers in Miss Madison placed fourth with 1125 points followed by Wild Bill Cantrell in Miss Smirnoff (844) and Wilson and Miss US (690) Four time champion Bill Muncey in Notre Dame placed seventh in the 12 boat field But Thompson gained during the five laps around the three mile course in the boat owned by Bill Harrah of Reno and soon was pressing Wilson and his new boat for fifth place Entering the home stretch Wilson held a slight lead and managed to hold onto it by crossing the finish line about to Don Wilson driver of Miss US Ron Musson piloting Miss Bardahl was able to defend the Gold Cup title he won last year Musson sped off with the $10000 first place prize money and a new convertible for winning the 56th running of the "world for unlimited hydroplanes witnessed by some 250000 persons who were jammed around the Detroit River shoreline The 35 year old Musson guided Miss Bardahl to victories in two heats and took a second in another before A couple of holes in one lent some excitement to an otherwise busy holiday weekend at the Fort Washington Golf Gub which held its annual Family Day picnic Veteran Ray Tyler bagged the fourth ace of his career a six iron shot into the third hole 155 yards Vido Mazzoni got his first ace in almost 30 years making it on the 165 yard 11th with a six iron Results of the Fort's best Chuck Thompson in Tahoe Miss which won three heats then finished last in the final heat was third with 1295 points Thompson held a commanding lead over Musson after the first three heats and needed only a fifth place finish in the final heat (since Musson placed third) to pul out his first Gold Cup triumph But when the gun sounded signalling the start of the final heat Thompson and Ta hoe Miss were still in the pits with engine trouble As the other five boats roared across the starting line Tahoe Miss was almost a full lap behind 2 4 TP Debbie Ledford Kathy Seidel Star In Foothill Meet with 527 points Muncey won the first heat and was a close second in the second heat before he hit a buoy and finished last In the third heat he was battling Musson for the lead when a pleasure boat drifted onto the course and the race was halted He could not restart his boat and sat idly as the field roared by Rough water kept the speeds down despite the fact the starting field of 12 boats was the fastest in Gold Cup history with an average speed of over 111 miles an hour Musson in Miss Bardahl turned in the best mark with 109104 miles an
