Up to 80 per cent recovery seen lanattaA r.JMtf.ini Recycling waste water could 'save' Cal. businesses ByMtryGtnz SAN FRANCISCO UP-A team of Eastern industrialists has arrived here with a message for the drought-plagued West: Water pollution is bad for business. The Easterners are launching a campaign to. sell California businesses on the idea of cleaning up their water enough so they can recycle it instead of dumping it back into streams and reservoirs. Representatives of Calgon Corp.

of Pittsburgh. told a recent news conference that they believe their system of carbon filters could allow some indistries to recycle as much as 80 per cent of their waste-water. They said they are talking with representatives of oil refineries, chemical and textile plants. Thomas A. McConomy, general manager of the corporation's Environmental Systems Division, said in the oast it's been cheaper for companies to dump the water instead of recycling it.

"THAT'S FINE as long as there is plenty of fresh water to go around," he said. "Unfortunately, that's no longer the case. With water rationing already Imposed in some areas and threatened in others, every drop counts." He said costs to industries to clean up their water for recycling could ranee from to 13 per thousand gallons. A typical industrial customer in.the East Bay Municipal Utility District, where water rates recently went up sharply to reflect increased costs because of the drought, pays about 50 cents per 1,000 gallons. "As water becomes short, the 12 to $3 per thousand gallons is a reasonable price to a McConomy said.

Under, the system, dirty water is passed through carbon granules porous enough to absorb pollutants. The process removes only organic pollutants like bacteria, however, and could not be used, say, to raise the quality of salty water from the San Joaquin-Sacramento Valley Delta. McConomy said the system could be used by municipal water systems to clean up the algae-laden water that begins pouring out of household taps as reservoirs are drained near the bottom. This happened for several days in April in Oakland and other areas served by the East Bay Municipal Utility District. CARBON filtration systems, tint used by the ancient Egyptians 3,000 years ago, already are in use by municipal water systems of 60 cities around the world and industrial plants in 19 states.

Although California law prohibits recycling of water from sewer to tap, many cities are beginning to use recycled water for other purposes. In South Lake Tahoe, sewage treated with carbon filtration and a number of other steps is pumped 27 miles for reuse in another recreation area, Indian Creek Reservoir. The state Department of Health guidelines for water recycled from reclaimed sewage sets the strictest standards for treated water used for swimming and recreation projects. STANDARDS are progressively lower for acricultural irrigation, landscape watering and industrial use. Henry J- Ongerth.

sanitary engineer for the state health department, said standards are being developed for using reclaimed sewer water to recharge supplies of water beneath the ground, which is not now permitted. As tne drought worsens, cities are looking for new ways to use their reclaimed sewer water. Parts of San Francisco's huge Golden Gate Park are irrigated with recycled water, and the East Bay district has been approached by state agencies wanting to buy some of its treated water, normally discharged into the San Francisco Bay, in watering plants along the highways. South of San Francisco, the Santa-Clara Valley Water District last month dedicated a $6.5 million sewage treatment plant that uses carbon filtration, among other processes, to treat sewage for use in watering parks and golf courses. Lloyd Fowler, chief district engineer, said the pipeline to be used to transport the treated water should be completed by July 1.

BUT NOBEL laureate Dr. Joshua Lederberg. a Stanford University geneticist, said he thinks the effects of carbon filtering should be studied further. "It may be a miracle," be conceded. "But I'm suspicious of miracles." He said he is putting together a group of researchers at Stanford who will try to answer these questions about water purified with carbon filters.

Brinkerhoff has held drilling depth records in several Rocky Mountain states and Alaska, and has participated in experimental federal projects involving deep underground release of nuclear energy. "THE ADDITION of Brinkherhoff to Petrolane's petroleum services division is timely," Munzer said. "In view of the current strong demand for onshore drilling rigs and the prospective upsurge in deep drilling, especially for gas in the Rocky Mountain region and other parts of the United States. Passion Play script key issue QflfJ WASH OBERAMMERGAU, West Germany (AP) The dates of test performances for a modernized version of its 300-year-old Oberammergau Passion Play were announced Tuesday by this Alpine town. The special dress reheasals Aug. 13-15 and 19-21 are to help decide which script to use for the 1980 production of the play, which is staged every 10 years. Some of the rehearsals are to be open to the public, a town council spokesman said. The updated version of the play is based on a script Benedictine priest Ferdinand Rosner wrote in 1750.

Unlike a rewrite by another priest, Alois Dai- senberger, which has been used since 1860, the Rosner version does not hold Jews collectively responsible for the crucifixion of Christ. WHEN THE PLAY was last presented in 1970, Jewish organizations called for an audience boycott because the town decided to continue to use the controversial Daisenberger script Despite the Jewish protests, the producers reported a sell-out for every one of the 100 all-day performances in the auditorium. The 17-member town council wants prominent theater critics and residents to vote for the version they like best after seeing the August rehearsals before a final decision is made for the 19SO production. The play dates from a 1632 pledge by the townspeople to present a portrayal of the death of Jesus every 10 years in thanksgiving for the end of an outbreak of plague. It is presented by a cast of 400 actors, chorus members and musicians who must all be residents.
