We hear how Davis's relentless work discipline was at odds with his reckless spending and colossal consumption of alcohol and drugs.

But what really comes through in this film is Davis's immense resolve in overcoming a lifetime of racism. Despite being terrified of visiting the Deep South, he was persuaded by Martin Luther King to joinacivil rights march through Montgomery, Alabama. None of which stopped Frank Sinatra making cruel racist jokes onstage at Davis's expense. "That was ugly," says film critic David Thomson. "And it doesn't leave a good taste in your mouth."
