SPORTS GUARDIAN Saturday May 3 1980 21 Marathon men press claims OLYMPIC GAMES John Rodda BOA's own boycott RUGBY LEAGUE Paul Fitzpatrick A passion play full of promise the new decade an example that the rest of the 80s might follow. On Good Friday at Craven Park, the two sides, al-thougl' below full strength, showed in a good game what capabilities the final holds. Both sides have had their worries as the Final has approached, with Hull in danger of losing Woods, their full-back, to a heavy suspension and Rovers suffering a serious doubt about their second row forward Phil Lowe. Tonsilitis has also been a late and unwelcome visitor to the Hull camp, but now that these alarms have passed, both sides can concentrate on the game itself. A month aeo.

Hull, who the BOA decision to resist the boycott was Derek Allhusen, a gold medal winner in equestrianism at the 1968 Games. He said that alterations to the ceremonies was only "pinprici-ing." Robert Bailey, an individual member, described the IOC as an antiquated- body which had never had a Jew on its committee and urged those sportsmen chosen to take the courageous decision not to go. Probably the most stunning speech of the afternoon came from Lord Philip Noel-Baker, a competitor in the 1912 Games, and since a Nobel Peace Prizewinner. Lord Noel-Baker, now 92, pointed out that the IOC had during recent times disregarded war, whether it was in Vietnam or Korea, in order that the Games take place. In tie world's present state, the best way of maintaining lifelines was for the Games to take place and as many countries to be there as is possible.

Denis Howell, the Opposition spokesman on sport, has put a question down for the Prime Minister asking her to make a statement about Britain's Olympic participation in view of the fact that President Carter has now lifted the ban on the exportation of grain from the United States to the Soviet Union. Britain's competitors at the Moscow Olympic Games wilL not be asked to parade in the opening and closing ceremonies. One official will carry the country's, nameboard and another the flag of the International Olympic Committee, five interlaced rings on a white background. This partial boycott was decided by the British Olympic Association at their annual meeting yesterday in London and today in Rome at a meeting of 16 West European Olympic Committees, Sir Denis Follows, the BOA chairman, will offer the proposal to his European colleagues. He wants them to adopt it and make a formal approach to the International Olympic Committee Executive Board, which is due to meet next month.

Sir Denis gave some indication yesterday that there would be "considerable limitations in the ceremonies, but he did not go into the details which his general purposes committee had discussed. The BOA annual meeting, normally attended by a few dozen people, produced its largest turn-out for years and showed the split which exists on the question cf sending a team to Moscow. Among those who opposed The weekend's sports fixtures Today's Rugby League Cup Final between Hull and Hull Kingston Kovers should prove as passionate an occasion as Wembley will stage all year. Whether the game fulfills its considerable potential, however, could depend on how deep-seated arc each side's iea.s ol losing. The Hull clubs have the best supporters in the game and in a citv which has not only seen the decline of a once talented football team but also of its own importance, the success of the rugby league side has assumed even greater significance The living will not be easy in that half of Mull harbouring the losing side over the forthcoming months.

It is because the divisions between the supporters are so deep, and because each club has an element among its followers, that it has been decided prudent to erect barriers at a Wernbley final for the first time. The fences will tend to diminish a little the image of the Final "as a family occasion but they are probably a wise precaution. Hopefully, though, the barriers wili not need to be mentioned here on. There is enough individual and collective ability in both sides to make this first final of MOTOR RACING Maurice Hamilton at Zolder Jones sets pace The Australian driver Alan Jones set the fastest time during the closing minutes of yesterday's practice for tomorrow's Belgian Grand Prix. Jones, driving a Saudia Leyland Williams, had stopped on the circuit -with fuel pressure problems and recorded his pace-setting lime with the team's spare car.

Carlos Reuteuiann of Argentina used the same car to set fourth fastest time after his usual car had stopped with engine failure. The Ligiers of Didier Pironi and Jacques Laffite split the Williams drivers with the Renaults of Jean-Pierre Jabouille and Bene Arnoux following in the fifth and sixth places. Tiff IMeedell improved throughout practice as he became accustomed to his Uni-part Ensign and the 28-year-old On the soulless roads of Milton Keynes today, there may a glimpse of Britain's first Olympic marathon winner. Britain and Britons have provided some of the drama of the race but never the Olympic champion. Jim Peters teetering round the Vancouver track in 1954 to collapse 200 yards from the finish of the Commonwealth Games race is perhaps the most memorable altogether Britain has four silver medallists from the Olympic Games Sam Ferris (1932) Ernie Harper (1936), Tom Richards (1952) and Basil Heatley (1964).

Today's race, the AAA centenary marathon, sponsored by the Provincial Insurance Company, is not an Olympic trial. We will not go through the angry scenes of four years ago, when the obvious choice for Montreal was Ian Thompson but because of hi- first marathon hiccough, he failed to get a place in the first three. Two men not running could get places; Bernie Ford, currently the fastest Briton with 2 hours 10 minutes seconds in Fukuoka in December, believes that is good enough for selection and Brendan Foster, whose only marathon in New Zealand two months ago took him 2 hours 15 minutes 49 seconds. There is, in fact, no outstanding marathon talent in the entry. A time of 2 hours 13 minutes plus is not going to set the world of the longdistance man alight. Unless there is a clutch of men going round Milton Keynes in under 2-il, Ford's case looks sound, particularly as he showed the selectors that he is fit by his run in the National Road Relay last week. The original Milton Keynes course was flatter, with a large section round a lake, than tomorrow's but the switch to cycle pathways, means that road traffic and the fumes it brinjs will almost be eliminated. Last year's winner.

Greg Hannon, from Belfast, has not shown that sort of form since; Dave Cannon, a former champion, did manage 2-13-14 in Nev Zealand when finishing second. Tony Simmons, who took the title two years ago, is one of a group who seem unlikely to get close to 2 hours 10 minutes Ian Thompson has now become erratic but he took fourth place in the New York event in 2-13-43 Ron Hill, the man who has made the greatest impact on marathon run FOURTH DIVISION Aldershot Wipan Ath Crewe v. He ran his first marathon in 1973, 2-18-29, and the second, in New York last October, finishing third in 2-13-30.

In between, he has built a solid reputation in cross country and was 17th in the world championship in Paris. He has recently had some swift victories in short-distance road races and he looks set for a breakthrough. too does Ian Ray of Salisbury, who won his first marathon at Harlow last year in 2-16-04. and Keith Penny, a man with a substantial background of short distance road running and 10,000 metres on the track. He lacks the esential speed for these distances but may be close to reward for the grind of 26 miles plus.

There are some older hands who might, in the circumstances of an open race, get through. Jim Dingwall of Scotland, with two second places in the past seven months, might hold up in a faster pace, while Ricky Wilde, at 34, might be getting a little old, but still shows flashes of talent which wouid have otherwise emerged with greater application. My finishing order is Kenyon, Thompson, Wilde with Ray as the outsider. John Rodda Ice Hockey HOME INTERNATIOMALS. Scotland v.

The expected Irish and French challenges came to nothing and although the Dutchman Nooren on Opstalan Shore Light was clear, his time of 57.1 sec left him fifth behind Fred Welch on Ross-more II (56.7 sec).

Kelly has won at county-show level and was fourth in the Calor Gas Young Riders' final at Wembley last year, but this was by far her greatest success and immediate endorsement of the Saddlers course of instructions she recently took at Stoneleigh. emerged from the Second Division last season having won all 26 league games, had gained such momentum that it was difficult to see anything stopping them. Since then, however, the feeling that an experienced Hovers side might just hold sway has begun to harden. It should be close. Hull, with such a well seasoned performer as John New-love directing operations from stand-off, are not lacking experience but are possibly short of the all-round expertise of Rovers for whom the incomparable Millward and the indestructible Sullivan, 37 now, and with no thought of Englishman set 23rd fastest time. Twenty four of the 26-car entry will start the Grand Prix and Needell will be attempting to keep his place on the grid during the final practice session today.
