Unlike some of his colleagues, he was able to force Marlar away off his back foot, while his cutting and square driving were equally delightful. His century came after three and a half hours, out of only 175. and though he should have been caught by Cox when 79, that was, to most of the ten thousand spectators, but a minor blemish on a most satisfying innings He stood 120 at the tea interval and his innings easily his highest of the season continued until something approaching exhaustion caused him to leave to a catch at cover point; he had batted splendidly for five and three-quarter hours Close completed his thousand runs for the season after scoring 32, and he finds himself requiring 45 wickets to complete the all-rounders double for the third time in three complete seasons.

YORKSHIRE First Innings Hove, Wednesday. A memorable innings by Lowsorl and valuable support from other members of the side enabled Yorkshire to build up a useful position in their game against Sussex here to-day. The Northerners found it one of the loveliest days ot the whole summer, and the change irom low clouds and shrewish east winds to sunsh.ne and languid warmth seemed just what Lowson needed. His batsmanship bloomed like a flower throughout most of the da. and at the end, after a Yorkshire declaration.

Sussex scored only three runs for the loss of two wickets. A first-wicket stand of 62 was an encouraging start, but at this point Watson was bowled when sadly timing a hook oft Marlar. Yet the latter kept a shrewdly tight length and had a great deal to do with the restriction of Yorkshire's scoring on so excellent a wicket, but Lester refused to be shackled by him and soon drove him for three straight fours, with no fieldsmen in the deep On the other hand, Wilson even after his unbeaten century against Lancashire could not escape the web woven for him by the off-spinner and, after a most uncomfortable stay in which he made only 9 runs in an hour and twenty minutes he suddenly lashed out and Marlar and was beaten and bowled. Close hit with great power He took two long leg boundaries off Marlar; pulled him violently over the long-on boundary for and made the last 30 of his 40 runs in just over a quarter of an hour, with this six and seven fours included. Then, however, he spooned a catch to cover point off the last ball before It is doubtful whether any of Lawsons GLAMORGAN v.

Only Hewson was able to hang on as Johnson came into the long home straight and he loo weakened as Boyd burst through from the back to third place and beat his own previous best by 2.5sec. in lmin. 51 9sec.

Hamilton (Scotland) surprised his friends most happily with a sixth place in lmin, 52.7sec. and so became the twenty-fourth British runner this season to beat lmin. 55sec. D. Lean, Australia's 440 yards hurdler, drew the inside lane in his final and in the early stages looked to be threatening C.

and just beating P. Eseri (Nigeria) and Oliver, the Australian holder. Sheer strength won the discus for South African Du Plessis, who looked capable of over 180ft. Pella and Pharaoh were some nine feet below their best and Pharaoh could not improve on his first throw. Tyler lost her high jump title to Hopkins, the Northern Ireland straddle jumper, who was born in the year in which Tyler was second in the Olympic Games.

On Thursday there will be four mens and three women's finals, but only one English victory is likely, in the weight through Savidge. Agostini failed in to-day's 220 vards semi-finals, possibly suffering a reaction after his 100 yards victorv, and Hogan had to struggle to qualifv in 22.2sec. Jowitt, a tow-haired New Zealander, now seems to be favourite in spite of his rather desultory training, but Shenton and Ellis cannot be ignored. Doubleday is high hurdles favourite over Jamaica's confident K. Gardner.

Twice during to-day's British Empire anci Commonwealth games athletic events England made a clean sweep, inning gold, silver, and bronze medals.

This happened first in the three miles, which Chataway was only three seconds outside his own and F. Green's World's record of 24 days ago, and then sgam, rather unexpectedly, in the 880 vards won with velvet smoothness by "another Oxford blue, D. J. N. Johnson.

Seventeen men lined up in two ranks under a dull, one might say typically Ensi'-h. sky for the three miles and after one false start the green-clad starter got hi- field away, with Chataway bursting into the lead on the first corner. Scotland Binnie took over the pace-making for the Srt mile ahead of Sando, Green, the bare-Wed Maiyoro (Kenya), and Warren Australia). Chataway, Binnie, and Warren were still tightly bunched. At the bell Sando, Green, and Chataway moved up together, with Green in two minds as to where to try to make his break.

So at last the Sherpa of British athletics gained his just deserts. In his and Green's wake came five men, each of whom returned his personal best time.

Six of them beat and Binnie exactly equalled C. H. Matlhews's Games record of 13min. 59.6sec. Here was a race of oualitv rivalling even Helsinki's Olympic 5 000 "metres so ill-fated for Chataway.

There were nine runners in the 880 yards md the lead repeatedly changed hands as runner after runner battered his way up to the head of the file. Johnson, however, covered the firbt quarter in 55 2sec. and naintained a relentless level pace which Wardte. Thomson Truemon, F. Marlar 1 Booth.

The feature of Northamptonshire's innings was the aggressive batting of Livingston, who scored a hard-hit 45 before being well caught by Barrington attempting another boundary hit.

A seventh-wicket stand of 30 by Mclntyre and Laker helped Surrey to approach within four runs of the Northamptonshire total, but Broderick finished off their innings by taking the last three wickets in nine deliveries for one run. Four of these runs came from leg byes and the wicket lost was Phebey's.

The foundations for this comfortable Middlesex score were laid by Dewes and Thompson in a determined second-wicket stand of 162, but their task might have been made more difficult had Wright made better use of his pace bowlers, particularly Ridgway As it was. The wicket, provided little help to the bowlers, but Ridgway's hostile accuracy commanded studious respect from both batsmen and he well deserved Robertson's wicket when only 33 runs had been scored in just on the hour.
