Grants I from universities and individual donations have enabled the organisers to enter a team of twenty athletes, seven swimmers. and seven fencers, and the main party of 29 competitors and three officials will leave London to-dav. It is unfortunate that 1 the athletic and swimming sections are not as strong as was hoped, because of the tour of the British athletic team in the Middle East and of the National Swimming Championships, which take place at the same time. The revised British team is: MESS ATHLETICS 273 the Legal Aid Fund amounted to 113.803.

The council states that urgent representations had been made to them about the lack of legal advice centres in many parts of the country: In their view the provision of legal advice is complementary to the provision of legal aid, which latter service will never be really effective until the provisions for legal advice are brought into operation." Among anomalies stated to have been created by the part operation of the act is that a plaintiff, by suing in a Palatine Court, can deprive a defendant of the benefits of the act which would have been available to him if the proceedings had been brought in the Chancery Division of the High Court. A similar difficulty may arise in other courts such as the Tolzey Court of Bristol." The council is convinced that the principal danger facing those responsible for the administration of a service covering the whole country is excessive rigiditv. The Advisory Committee says it is satisfied that the National Assurance Board deals with cases as promptly as the circumstances permit.

The committee has investigated the criticism that the contributions of applications are sometimes excessive and is satisfied that this is so." Living costs have risen steeply since 1945. when the RushclifTe committee reported, and the committee "does not consider that a fnee income of 3 a week is any longer a correct criterion on which to base a tee, whose comments were published yesterday with the first report by the Law Society on the operation and finance of Part I of the Legal Aid and Advice Act, 1949. Part I provides for the establishment and administration by the society of a legal advice service, legal aid in matters preliminary to and not involving litigation, and legal aid in nearly all classes of civil proceedings in substantially all courts in England and Wales. The committee thus summarises its comments and recommendations arising from the report Although the period under review is too horl for detailed examination, we find nothing to blame and much to praise in the wav the Law Society have tackled their new and arduous task and in the work of the National Assistance Board. We regret the severity of the Legal Aid i Assessment of Resources) Regulations, and the nbsence of legal aid in the county court and courts of summary jurisdiction.

We urge the Government to allow the Law-Society to set up the legal advice scheme as soon as possible and cannot overstress the importance we attach to this recommendation MOSTLY MATRIMONIAL CASES than itiree hours by Grieves and Edrich, i who each obtained centuries, enabled Lancashire to declare at Old Trafford yes- terday far earlier than anyone In the day's lat nuur. however. Keeton and Simpson batted wiih such confidence and ease that Nottingham now need only 112 runs to avoid an defeat with all their wickets in hand. If the pitch to-day is as easy paced as it had become yesterday evening Lancashire may have difheulu in winning this match. i When Lancashire began their innings Washbrook and Howard appreciated the need for quick runs before the effect of the roller wore off.

low NOT EXPENSIVE More important than mere anomalies, it considers, is the fact that legal aid is not available in the county court, which involves very considerable hardship to a large section of the public. Pointing out that there is also no civil legal aid in the courts of summary jurisdiction, the committee comments that the effect of the present act as it is now in force may thus be not only to divert matrimonial "litigants from less serious to more serious actions but also from courts where probation officers offer conciliation services to courts where they do not." It thinks however, that the deferment of the legal advice scheme has had far more serious consequences. When Harvev's length began to fatter Edrich drove him lor six and Grieve-; swept overpilched balls viciouslv to the long boundarv and square cm twice with a lovely wrist action. The new ball was greeted with cant respect. Grieves pivoted quickly and made a fine old-fashioned drive to long leg and Edrich.

having reached his fiftv with a straight drive for four, attacked the bowling vigorously. There was little could do to stop the liow of runs which the batsmen took almost as they pleased. Although Edrich seemed to become a little carefree after his fifty. Grieves was in great form. Essentially a back-foot player, his cuts and pulls were perfectly limed and left the bat with immense powrer.

He overtook Edrich in the nineties and reached his century in two hours. Edrich had a provocative wait at 99 before getting his hundred, but after tea the batsmen enjoyed themselves thoroughly and delighted "the crowd adding 12fi runs in less than an hour before Howard declared. Of the many remarkable strokes played by Grieves the most extraordinary was a six. The ball pitched outside the off stump, but Grieves with the shortest of back lifts ilicked for the stroke was little more it deep into the pavilion over mid-wicket. PRISONERS WORKING IN FACTORY From our London Staff Fleet Street. Thursday. The Home Office announced to-night that by agreement with the Ministry of Labour and the Transport and General Workers' Union eight specially chosen prisoners, all women, from Manchester Prison, are now working at a local factory. It is the first time that such an experiment has been made at a closed prison. The eight women are employed on hank winding on a machine set apart for them at the bottom of the workshop, and they are under the supervision of prison officers.

The other workers in the factory have agreed to the experiment. Though the firm pays full wage rates for the prisoners' work they receive only normal prison earnings. Previous experiments of this kind have been with prisoners at open prisons and with Borstal boys.
