Women Reporters Hail Janet Leigh For Cooperation HOLLYWOOD--UP--Film star Janet Leigh, formerly of Merced, and her husband Tony Curtis were hailed by women reporters in the film capital as the most cooperative a and actor of the year. In their annual pre Christmas award yesterday, bers of the Hollywood. en's Press Club 1 ted the couple 'or their Warren in a radio report to the eople. said the joint legislative ict finding committee and other groups studying the problem agree on three main points: The need for building highways faster is apparent to all. Spending 1 Need Is Cited The state must spend something more than $3,000,000,000 on highway construction in the next 15 years in the interest of safety and efficiency.

Additional financing is necessary. Warren said highways and financing will perhaps receive more discussion at the legislative session opening January 5th than any other matters. The governor said it is logical to assume the 1953-54 budget will be higher than the current spending program of slightly over 51,000,000,000. The passage of Proposition 2, increasing school support by $70,000,000 a year, and the constant growth of the state, 370,000 more Californians each year, make that almost inevitable, he said. Fledges Balanced Budget He did not say whether he will ask for new taxes for general state operations.

He promised to keep the budget balanced and to operate as nearly as possible oh a pay as you go basis. As for highways, the governor said, "we have got to develop a program that will slow down the terrible death rate." Inflation has "robbed us of funds we thought would be available for actual construction work," Warren said. He said inflation and 1,500,000 more cars on the roads have made the present road building program inadequate. could ask for my freedom with in a year if I were unhappy. Well was unhappy.
