Australia defeated- South Africa by an innings and 38 runs in the third Test here to-day and so gained a lead of twb wins to one in the best-of-five games series. South Africa, needing a total of 27u to avert defeat by an innings, were all out for 232, -and Australia won with a day and a half to spare. Endean (71), McClean (65), and Watkins (48) all batted courageously, but South Africa's resistance collapsed when Lind-wall and Miller tookv over, the new ball at 159. Endean and McLean, after an enterprising fifth wicket partnership of 99 in 93 minutes, were both dismissed at 167. Watkins was troubled by a back injury but launched, a brave attack on the bowling in scoring 48 runs in 58 minutes, his last ten scoring shots including five fours.

Tayfield, who could not bat, was injured when stopping a stinging drive from Miller yesterday, and an X-ray examination to-day showed a fracture at the base of the thumb. He will travel with the party to Tasmania, where he will receive treatment, but his prospects of playing in the fourth Test, beginning at Adelaide on January 24, are poor. Details SOUTH AFRICA. Clarke said I went out thirty seconds after they had taken him out. They went to the bottom of the stairs and I saw someone strike O'Farrell.

"-He had a glass of beer iir his hand and turned to his friend and said Hold my I then saw him hitting O'Farrell and then, when O'Farrell was on the ground, I saw him kicked three or four times." The Coroner Could 1 you identify the individual who handed the glass of beer to another soldier an'd then struck and kicked O'Farrell Yes. When you saw Innes kicking O'Farrell on the ground were they vicious kicks No, not what you would call vicious. was not kicking with all his force. "Arguing with Sailors" Frederick Albert Fairebrother (16), a toolmaker, of Audley Road, Hendon, said he attended the dance in the civilian canteen and saw O'Farrell arguing, with two sailors. Afterwards some soldiers took O'Farrell out of the building and another soldier who followed them carrying a glass of beer asked one of the others to hold the glass.

The coroner asked Innes to stand beside Fairebrother and asked Can you identify this soldier as the man who had the glass of beer Fairebrother replied, No," and added that the man who held the glass was tall, a lance-corporal, and had a moustache. The coroner Let me get this clear. Do you say you do not think this particular soldier was there or do you think there was someone there like him but he had a moustache There was someone there like him. Fairebrother added that the tall soldier who had had a glass hit O'FarrelL He saw the tall soldier's foot move but did not see the boot touch O'Farrell's head. soldiers on a bus on Saturday and asked if anything more had been heard about the case, but that was all. The coroner Nobody told you to say it was a 'Corporal? No, sir. The inquest was adjourned until Tuesday, and the coroner instructed the jury not to discuss the case with anyone. Evidence was given at. an inquest at Hendon yesterday that the dead man Private John Patrick O'Farrell (22), an Irishman, serving with the R.E.M.E.

had been kicked three or four times outside a dance. O'Farrell died in his barrack-room on December 19 from head injuries. James Henry Clarke, a grave-digger, of Brookfleld Avenue, London, said he was at a dance, saw O'Farrell kicked three or four times," and heard a woman shout Look at him kicking him like that. Why doesn't someone fetch the M.P.s The coroner, Dr J. A.

Gorsky, called Lance-Corporal J. M. Innes to the side of the witness-chair and asked Clarke if that was the man who had struck O'FarrelL Clarke said it was. At the end of Clarke's evidence the coroner again called Innes to Clarke's side and asked: "When you first identified this corporal at an identification parade did he have a moustache Clarke replied Yes," and added that although the corporal was now clean shaven he was sure it was the same man. Dudley Keith Hedger, timber salesman, also of Brookfield Avenue, said the soldier who hit O'Farrell was a corporal.

He picked out a man with a moustache at an identification parade. When Innes again stood beside the witness chair, Hedger said he was not the soldier although of the same build and height Nose Fractured Dr F. E. Camps, pathologist, said the cause of death was inhalation of blood following a laceration of the lip and a fracture of the nose. Mr Lewis Charles Nicholls, Director of the Metropolitan Police Laboratory, said O'Farrell had consumed approximately six pints of beer or nine fluid ounces of spirits.

That was a minimum quantity and had been taken recently before death. Lance-Corporal Walter Stafford (23), of Beadnell Place, Newcastle-on-Tyne, said O'Farrell argued with civilians at the dance. Lance-Corporal Innes and I told him to be quiet and then led him out. We got him by the arms and took him outside the dance hall. Then I went back." As a result the Burnley defence were given ample time to cover! Except towards the when Portsmouth were striving to equalise, one never had the Pfession of attack or forward movement and this the half-backs weFe to blame- Scoular, in his rugged, tough way worked immensely hard but Dickinson had a terrible match. He was slow to tackle and wretchedly inaccurate in nis passes of which possibly his best was one to his own goalkeeper. After eight minutes Holden took a pass from Adamson, drew Froggatt, and waited until Mcllroy raced up beside him. Then at precisely the right moment he slipped a gentle through pass which Mcllroy promptly and with perfect aim glided into the corner of the net. Several rough tackles by Portsmouth indicated a lively game but the referee clearly was having no nonsense and remained admirably in control.

A glorious dribble by Harris almost brought an equaliser and then the game became scrappy and indeed almost leisurely as Burnley fell back on defence Reid had two good attempts, with a header and a shot, and at half-time Portsmouth were still in the game. But a minute later a long corner from Elliott eluded Upriehard and found Shannon. Stephen almost saved his header on the line but the ball was over it and any tension there was almost departed from the game. Harris unluckily hit a post and Froggatt joined the attack without efrect. Burnley were quietly in control until seven minutes from the end Thompson dropped a centre and Gaillard scored easily.

Any hope of Portsmouth equalising disappeared almost immediately when Mcllroy was brought down from behind and Elliot was able to demonstrate the perfect, unstoppable penalty kick. p. -j. BURNUEY. Thompson; Aird.

FUND FOR PRESTON PLAYER Subject to the approval of the Football League, Preston North End F.C. supporters propose to raise 1,000 in order that the club shall not lose the services of J. IVIarston, its Australian centre-half. Marston stated in November that he intended to take his wife and child back to Australia at the end of the season because they were homesick, and intended to remain there as he could not afford to return to England at his own expense. League rules allowed Preston to pay Marston's passage to England three years ago and would permit their paying for his return to Australia, but not for a second passage to England.

Now a fund to enable Marston and his family to have their holiday Australia is proposed, and the Mayor of Preston, Mr J. J. Ward, has agreed to act as chairman of the organising committee. He has written to the club for approval and asked it to submit the proposal to the League F. Howarth, the Football League secretary, said yesterdav "The League management committee must ensure that this is for a specific purpose and properly score might have been much closer.

O'Kane opened the scoring after some neat tackles by the schools defenders, but Warrington eventually equalised and it required two quick goals by Booth to give Ramblers a half-time lead 3-1 and emphasise their superiority in front of goal. After half-time the boys scored again through Livesey, but then they became unsettled and Ramblers scored tour good goals, mostly headed, and then forced another off an unlucky back. A score of 8-2 would daunt most sides, but Gemmell reduced the arrears with a fine shot trom 18-6-33-2. Johnston 14 6-0-51-1. Ring 12-1-54-0.

UNIVERSITY SPORT Rugby Tour in Italy As a missionary effort, the University Athletic Union's recent Rugby Union tour in Italy was most successful, although both games were lost. The Northern Italy Select Fifteen at Parma generally outweighted the visiting team and were surprisingly fast in the "conditions. The U.A.U. defended so well that only one try was conceded. At Cagliari the Italian Universities were lighter than the Parma side and.

in better conditions, a fine game resulted between two well-matched teams. After a scoreless first half a clever interception gave the Italians a converted try and Wilkinson replied with a good try. To judge from these two matches It would appear that the game is making encouraging development in Italy. The standard of back play was good, movements being executed with speed and much versatility. The forwards also were fast but lacked the finer points of scrummaging, so much so that under home rules they would have been more frequently penalised.

It seems fair to say that the standard of play was equal to that of a good English club side and one gathered the impression that a fully representative U.A.U. side which took the fiela unfatigued by long-distance travel and which showed greater precision in attack would have won both games comfortably. The Italian officials and press were nevertheless greatly impressed by the exhibition of Rugby given by the visitors. The match arranged with Waterloo for February 21 has been cancelled. On account of injuries and county fixtures several changes have had to be made in the English Universities Rugby team to meet the Scottish Universities at Old Anniesland.

He was captain in the United States in 1947. His aDPointment is much to be applauded and the early announcement also is commendable. Cotton, the outstanding personality in British professional golf for many years, hopes to return to regular tournament golf this season and will be in a position to make his own decision as to whether he will play in the Ryder Cup match. COTTON WORKERS' CLAIM Case Before Tribunal Discussions on the aDplication for an increase ia wages of two sMllings in the pound affecting 265,000 cotton workers were heard in private in London yesterday by the Industrial Disputes Tribunal, and the inquiry was concluded. The findings will be announced through the Ministry of Labour at the end of this week or during next week.

The workers' case was presented by representatives of the Amalgamated Association of Operative Cotton Spinners and Twiners, the National Association of Card, Blowing, and Ring Room Operatives, and the Northern Counties Textile Trades' Federation. The employers' organisations concerned are the Condenser and Allied Spinners and Manufacturers' Association, the Cotton Spinners and Manufacturers Association, and the Federation of Master Cotton Spinners' Associations. Waloanks RUGBY CLUB WILL NOT BE FINED Dispute with League Mr Justice Upjohn was told in the Chancery Division yesterday that Mr B.

Manson, chairman of the Council of the Rugby Football League, Mr J. S. Barritt, a member of the council, and Mr William Fallowfield, secretary of the league, did not intend to act upon a resolution from the league's management committee, purporting to impose a fine of 50 on Dewsbury Rugby League Football Club. No order was made on a motion of Mr George Oldroyd, president of the Dewsbury club, and Mr George Arthur Lister, a member of its governing body, for judgment in default of defence against Mr Manson, Mr Barritt, and Mr Fallowfield, on an original motion for an injunction to restrain them from acting on the management committee's resolution but Mr Oldroyd and Mr Lister were awarded costs. The resolution arose out of the transfer of a player from Dewsbury to Wigan in 1951.

Mr Justice Upjohn said the three defendants represented a well-known body, and if they formally admitted to the Court that the resolution was of no effect, that would meet the club officials' purpose. Mr J. J. Lindner, for the club officials, agreed. Mr C.

R. D. Richmount, for the defendants, said that to ask his clients to submit to an injunction, when they said that the resolution was void, would be insulting. Mr Lindner I accept that but my friend's attitude is a complete somersault from that adopted on the last when he intimated that the action would be most strenuously contested. Mr Justice Upjohn That makes your victory all the more pleasant.
