Applicant: EISHIN KOBA-SHIGAWA. Firm Name: PALM GROVE where droop-shouldered soldiers, half asleep from fatigue, march on in ankle-detp sand. It emanates from the eyes of hollow-cheeked peasants, crawling from hideouts to help the Chinese soldiers find food. It shrieks from burned houses where only the odor indicates that something once lived there. Packs of dogs are abroad in Kaifeng at night, sniffing for food.

Four-fifths of the people of Kaifeng have fled. All rickshaws are gone. Almost every show window is boarded up, and the streets are sandbagged. The city is without adequate protection, since many of the police have gone to the country to fisht the Japanese. Only the highest military officials and the poorest classes and foreign missionaries remain.

Human Fragments On Kaifeng's battered modern railway station hangs threads and bits of flesh. Parts of bodies are scattered through the wreckage of freight cars which have been demolished by bombs. Every house in the vicinity of the station has been smashed into fragments by bombs. The terrain is pockmarked from aerial attacks. There is lighter damage in the city itself.

The newspaper is still publishing, putting out extras for all Chinese victories. I have come from the midst of war where attacks and retreats were sudden where nobody slept more than two hours a day, and then rushed out together to stave off another Japanese attack. I've seen young men and boys who never fought before rush into the front line, cut down by artillery and machine gun fire as they neared the enemy. I've watched the officers plan fheir attacks, entreat their men not to be afraid of battle, and then cry as they returned to the field after battle for the lifeless bodies of their fellow officers. The battle has been raging back and forth across the railway, with the Japanese controlling the railroad east and west of Lanfeng.

The Chinese hold the main line of the south railway, and are attacking the Japanese in flank maneuvers to the north. Throw Grenades Japanese balloons ascend every day to locate Chinese movements and guns before opening their attacks. The Chinese usually retaliated by advancing infantry forces, yelling and throwing hand grenades. Chinese ammunition supplies were growing smaller rapidly this week. Food had been cut to simplest rations, since the railway had been cut, and water wells were inadequate to supply the troups.

Last night, the Chinese staff prepared for an advance by burning all documents at headquarters, then following tanks through a Japanese envelopment, which was sweeping toward Kaifeng. Peasant farmers who accompanied the troops started running when shots echoed in the dark, and dumped their baggage, fearing the Japanese were at our rear instead of in front. When we arrived at a point west of Kaifeng (which cannot be disclosed) we discovered the Japanese had retreated to the northwest. Peasants crawled from their underground dugouts and welcomed the soldiers. The peasants said "the Japanese only bayonetted some dozen men.

and didn't kidnap any women. They hunted our girls and raped them," they added. Late today, the staff ordered another advance, this one in quick time to the northwest in an attempt to catch General Do-haira's troops, which are vanishing in the direction of the Yellow river.
