The sociable and ball at the Court House hall, Hilo, on New Year's eve was enjoyed by a sociable lot of people, all seemed to assimilate. It was generally conceded that it was the most enjoyable gathering that has been held in many years.

The music under direction of C. J. Stevens was excellent. At midnight the dancers sang American airs accompanied by the band, there were fireworks, and the bells also raag. The night seemed like day, the moon shone so bright.

Dancing was kept up to an early hour Wednesday morning. On Christmas eve there was a dance at Wilson's livery stable. The carts and carriages were all put on one side and the dancers had a good time, but it was not the same rink as it was before the transformation. Just now we see what an accommodation a railroad would be. The Kinau could not land her freight at Papaikou so she landed it at Hilo.

Wilson's truck with six horses took it as far as Paukaa and the balance of the way it was carried on the backs of mules. J. Nawahi, and K. W. Wilcox have gone on an electioneering tour among the plantations on this side of Hawaii.

Doubtful if they meet with any better success than was done here. An effort was made to get the Haiii church for Wilcox to speak in but most of the trustees objected, so he had to leave without making his little speech. An effort was made to raise money for Wilcox but very little was raised. Mr. Nawahi, who has, for many years been quite an active member of Haili church will not go there any more it is said.

He is angry because the church was refused Wilcox. The church had some beautiful present to give Nawahi Christmas, but he would not accept it. The silver voiced Kekoa formerly a minister and lawyer is also displeased, and will not goto Haili church anymore. Nawahi and Major Baker, it is said, will run for the Legislature. The regular ticket is a strong one.

It is unfortunate that there should be so many in the field. At a' meeting held at the Court House January Rycroft and Kamoku were recommended to be nominated as Representatives. Some of the Portuguese wished to have Silva recommended for nomination. During 1SS9 $30,000 worth of fertilizer and $17,000 worth of flour has been brought to Hilo. J.

Sunday School Festival. That usually quiet place Lahaina, Maui, was the scene of much gayety on New Year's day, on account of a large gathering of Sunday schools. Besides those in Lahaina there were schools from the island of Molokai, Wailuku, Waihee, liana, Makawao, Paia and Hamakuapoko. These different schools were taken to Lahaina on the steamers Mokolii, Likelike and W. G.

Hall. The exhibition took place in the large Wai-nee church, in the afternoon and evening. The building was crowded to overflowing on both occasions. Between the afternoon and evening exhibitions there was a grand luau, and at the first sitting he tables were occupied by 9G0 persons. The exercises and singing of the different schools was really excellent.
