ASSOCIATED PRESS Spartan-like at Notre Dame: Michigan St. wins OT thriller Associated Press SOUTH BEND, Ind. Not even Charlie Wcis could stop Michigan State's mas tery over Notre Dame in South Bend. The Spartans overcame a 2 1 -point comeback by the lOth-ranked Fighting Irish and pulled out their fifth straight win at Notre Dame Stadium with a 44-41 overtime victory on Saturday. Jason Teaguedashed 1 9yards with an option pitch for the game-vvinningtouchdown, handing Weis his first loss as Irish coach after starting the season 2-0 on the road.

"I told them you don't get any medals for trying," Weis said. "I'm never content when you end up losing." Drew Stanton led the Spartans offensively, throwing for three touchdowns and running for another. Michigan State amassed 488 yards total offense against the Irish. Stanton was 16 of 27 for 327 yards. "We wanted to show that this program is back in the right direction." Stanton said.

"There's no better way to do that than a rivalry game at Notre Dame." The Spartans (3-0) have made a habit of beating the Irish on their home turf, joining Purdue (1954-62) as the only opponent to win five straight at Notre Dame Stadium. Irish fans, many of them wearing the yeilow of the school's new spirit shirt, booed as the Spartans celebrated the victory at midfield. "It's good coming into a hostile environment and winning a game like this," said Matt Trannon, who had five catches for a career-high 1 36 yards and two touchdowns. Michigan State's 12 wins at Notre Dame are the most by an Irish opponent. 'league, who had been suspended a week earlier for Michigan State's victory over Hawaii, said he had a hard time breathing as his teammates piled on him in the end zone.

"This is the best time of my life." he said. "league credited Stanton for pitching the ball at the right time and his teammates for clearing his path to the end zone. The Fighting Irish (2-1) rallied from 21 points down in the third quarter to tie the score, but had to settle for a 44-yard field goal by D.J. Fitzpatrick on their OT possession. Michael Robinson threw three touchdown passesand ran for another to lead a well-balanced attack that supported a swarming defense, and Penn State routed Central Michigan 40-3 on Saturday. Penn State (3-0) showed an aerial attack that had rarely been on display at Beaver Stadium as the Nittany Lions limped to losing record in four out of the last five seasons. Robinson was 1 4-for-23 for 274 yards and the offense dominated from the start against Central Michigan (1-2), which had allowed an average of 454 yards and 28 points in its first two contests. The game was in hand for Penn State by midway through the third quarter, when Robinson was pulled for backup Anthony Morelli. Deon Butler, a 5-foot-10 freshman who has turned into Robinson's favorite target, had two TD catches while the offensive line provided good protection and helped Tony Hunt run for 60 yards by halftime.

With the Nittany Lions leading 10-0 midway through the second quarter, Robinson hit Butler, one of several speedy newcomers, with a pass at the Chippewas' 15. Corner-back Vincent Hicks lunged but couldn't catch Butler, who ran into the end zone for a score. On Central Michigan's next possession, Jay Alford sacked Smith at the Chippewas' 3 and two plays later Smith was chased by three Penn State defenders before running out of bounds to thwart the drive. Smith had amassed 478 yards of total offense in Central Michigan's 38-37 win last week over Miami (Ohio). Penn State was ready for the nimble passer as Alford and fellow defensive linemen Matthew Rice, Tamba Hali and Scott Paxson were in the Central Michigan backfield all day.
