July 29, 1999 NEWS Press Sun-Bulletin 3B OUR TOWNS Seven families in running for Pennsylvania Habitat home BY WYN HORNBUCKLE Staff Writer Habitat for Humanity in Susquehanna County is nearing a decision on which family will inhabit its first house since the chapter was established last year. The board has narrowed the choice to about 7 out of 14 families who applied for the home at 24 Locust in Montrose, which is undergoing major renovations by volunteers, said Chairman George Hill. The home will be sold to a lowincome family at no profit and with no interest. The owners must provide "sweat equity" their own labor helping to rebuild the home. A housing survey last year found 1,500 sub-standard houses in Susquehanna County- -homes that lacked proper heating, plumbing and other basic standards.

Hill has mobilized about 20 to 30 volunteers to pioneer Habitat's work in Susquehanna County, the county's first chapter ever. The organization still needs volunteers and donations, Hill said. Town of Kirkwood: Rabies clinic offered A rabies clinic will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Town of Kirkwood Highway Garage. HELP NEEDED For more information on how to volunteer, call George Hill, chairman of Susquehanna County's Habitat for Humanity chapter, at 570-278-3223. Habitat is a Christian organization formed by residents dedicated to the rehabilitation and building of homes for working, low-income families.

All funds come from donations, fund-raising events or private foundation grants. Habitat receives no government funding. Work began on the house, which was donated by Community Bank and Trust, in June. Each Saturday, a group of volunteers meets to work on the house. He said the house is only the beginning of Habitat's work in the county.

Hill hopes building houses will build bridges to other programs and opportunities for economic growth and development in Susquehanna County. "We're always willing to take on more if there are people willing to help. I'm pleased with their progress and the turnout of people who have volunteered their time." Also, the Town Clerk's Office will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday for the convenience of residents. Dinga, Libous doubt they dined on Philip Morris' tab unspecified dinner, and Libous had received a ticket to the annual Business Council's dinner in Albany. Libous referred questions on the matter to his counsel and chief of staff Robert Nielsen who said if the senator ever did receive such a ticket, it quite possibly was wasted.

"When you're a senator, you really don't need a ticket," Nielsen said, noting that the annual gala by the Business Council is attended by nearly every legislator in Albany, as well as a wide array of representatives from local businesses that belong to the state council, some of whom have also sent tickets to the senator's office. "I can tell you the senator sits at the table with our constituents. I can't say with certainty he used that (Philip Morris') ticket." Dinga said most wine-and-dine events are a waste of time, noting that little if anything of substance gets discussed or done. For that reason, he said, he has stopped going to them. "They start late and end late and just aren't worth going Dinga said.

BY DON SBARRA listed as having been a guest at some If the lobbyists for Philip Morris expected something in return for picking up the dinner tabs for a couple of state lawmakers from the Southern Tier, they may be disappointed.
