Seven Veterans hospitals in Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma are now under construction by the Corps of Engineers, Department of the Army, or are being planned by the VA, Leo D. Mark, rector of VA Construction and Supply Service for the four-state area, said today. They will add 5,195 VA hospital beds. At the same time one addition is being planncd-at Jefferson Barracks, where 500 beds are to be added, bringing (he hospital capacity to 3,097. Preliminary drawings have been started.

Preliminary drawings have been started for the 745-bed general medical and TB VA hospital at Kansas City; work already has begun on the general medical hospital at Little Rock; working drawings are about 17 per cent completed for the neiiro- psychiatric hospital at Norman, Ok. Inhoma. At Oklahoma City, President Truman has just approved the site for the general medical hospital; at Poplar Bluff, about one per cent of the construction Work had been completed last month; at St. Louis, the government expects to take over property at the general medical site on May 1 and preliminary drawings arc now under consideration; at Topeka, the rite for the neuropsychiat- ric hospital is in (he process of being approved. Mork said had been advised by the Corps of Engineers that contracts totalling approximately $88,674,031 have been awarded since January 1 for twelve general medical hospitals throughout the United States and that a total of 23 hospitals are now under contract at a total cost of $194,253,000.

Many hospitals, Mork said, had to be redesigrmted last year because of increased construction costs The Corps of Engineers has indicated to the VA that of the 46 hospitals still in process of design, 40 have progressed sufficiently to be scheduled tentatively for advertising during the present year. Three hospitals will be advertised for bids during tho second quarter of 1948; fourteen will be offered during the third quarter; and 23 are scheduled for the last quarter of the year. These 40 hospitals will provide 20,751 additional beds. Of this group, 26 will be general medical and surgical institutions; four will be for tuberculosis; eight will be for neuro- psychiatric cases; and two will have separate buildings for general medical and tuberculosis patients. Of the 71 hospitals; scheduled for construction by the Corps of Engineers under the VA five had been, designed by.

R.

Rroadhurst, chairman of Benton County Triple-A Conser- jvation This year about $150 million has been appreciated foi' conservation under Triple-A. Divirl- cd among the 145 million people in I the country, that means a little over a' I dollar per person. But to the farmer it -means that 10 or 20 or maybe 200 300 persons arc cooperating with him in getting the conservation job done on his farm. In actual practice under this partnership program for soil and water conservation, the chair, man explains, the farmer more than matches every dollar put up by the consumers. In addition he usually does all the work.

Often, encouraged by the limited help in getting started, he expands his conservation efforts far beyond the basic practices of the program. Dividends resulting from jthis public-farmer partnership are and varied, says the chairman. jThe farmer has a better farm. Ero, sion and depletion are slowed down. The farm will last longer.

Continued operation is assured and production is increased. The public benefits from continued abundant production of food and other essential agricultural commodities. The land is being held on the'farm and improved. Essentially, says the chairman, the program is an insurance policy which continues to pay dividends indefinitely into the future. Both farmer and consumer help pay the dividends Thursday night, May De- jcatur Community Club held a pip supper at the City Hall, the 'proceeds of which are to go toward buying jpark equipment.

YOUR ideas may be better than any received to date. Only three meetings ago, a few suggestions were made- for improvements, one of them being for a new concrete' bridge to replace the old wooden bridge at the north end of the town of Decatur. A committee vvas formed, and then four sub-committees, each taking a section of the town and country, which was canvassed house by house, and a survey made of what could be raised place, and also the petitions to the Kansas City Southern Railway were signed. On April 17th there were over 500 signers on the petition, and the petition, together with a letter asking for the new as sent to the railroad, and on April 19th we had a letter back from their genera! manager, Mr. Hooper, saying someone from their road would call on us in tlie near future to discuss the matter in detail.

We are very hopeful that our bridge will be by a new concreted one. Don't forget the next meeting, Decatur Hall, Thursday night, May 14th, eight o'clock. The meetings are held regularly every other Thursday night. S. G.
