ETROIT STAR, GREATEST BACK IN FOOTBALL Great Show In Offing Next Sunday Many Trades Expected In Major Loops TITLE IS ITHHELD Biddle's Honestv nized But Action Taken For Good of Game By RED McQUEEN Sports Editor, The Game Would Draw 80,000 National League Meeting To Meet, Starting Tomorrow In New York, Says Visiting Scribe THE Territorial Boxing commiBslon, at a special meeting held yestr. TORRID FEUD LOOMS BIG DEALS LOOM Warner's Team Capable of Giving Detroit Pros Hard Battle Cardinals Want Pitcher; Yanks in Market, Too v-v "ijrj fit 4 --Pti i'yM ir 7j By DICK HYLAND ONE week from today the Detroit Lions, professional football team, will play a game with an all-star aggregation at the Stadium.

Were this game played in Chicago or New York it would draw from sixty to eighty thousand spectators. The class of the men, both as teams and individuals, is that good. Several years ago in New York I wrote a column which asked the question, "Is the professional game CLOSING TITK AFTER THE HOSS ESCAPED IT TURNED out exactly as I expected the Moro-Valdez fight of Friday night It is a matter of record in the files of he of last week that I definitely opposed a -tura match between the two Here are a few extracts last week's columns: "Fin sorry you asked me whadda I think aiout the hox fite Friday nieht I might have heard of a worse card before hut I can't remember when Sonny Valdez is a fine little chap but he is no more of a match for-Kid (Love Me Tonight) Moro than I am for Joe Louis." And in a personal letter to C-eorge Blake the day he met with the boxing eommish to secure their approval of Friday's bout, I told Blake not to push a return bout, that it would be another lousy fight and that I didn't think the joint would be a safe place to be in if they met again There are any number of close followers of local boxing besides myself who told Choo that he was making a mistake by rematching these boys It was brought to the attention of Choo that there was too much to lose and nothing to be gained in having them in a second match after their unsatisfactory bout of last September Now Choo is howling like a stuck pig and he blames the commission for putting the fight game on the rocks Choo is more to blame than anyone else With more talent than he knows what to do with, Choo had no business asking the eommish to approve Friday's main event He threatens now to call off next Friday's card which features Piston Horiguchi against Young Gildo While there is no question that this card will suffer from last Friday's fiasco, Choo realized several days ago that he had made a mistake by matching Horiguchi against Gildo in his first fight here and welcomes the opportunity to use this as a way out. MUST GO BACK TO THE JUDGES THE BOXING commission has reversed the decision of the referee Time alone will show the reaction of the fans to this action Despite the fact that Referee Andy Biddle, who is ithout 'question, one of the best in the Islands, was honest in his decision, he will have to be shelved until Friday's squabble Is forgotten This will leave only George Blake, Willie Whittle and Alky Dawson (who hasn't renewed his license as yet) to handle coming fights Lt. John Lovcll is returning to the Mainland shortly It was suggested before the Moro-Valdez fight that the eommish go back to the old form and appoint two judges for this particular bout, leaving it to three minds instead of one to determine the winner It looks very much like this will have to be done from now on, not only in the important fights, but in all events MORO-VALDEZ ARE JUST LIKE THAT WHILE I still insist that Moro can stop Valdez inside of four rounds any time he elects to do so, we'll never see the day that the Fil champion will put forth his best efforts against the Mexican lad Moro and Valdez are as inseparable as a pair of trousers Moro likes Sonny and showed in their two meetings that he does not intend to hurt him There is a lot of this palsy-walsy affection to be found in local fistic circles I have been told that Valdez was none too anxious to punish Anson Rego in their recent bout, after he had closed the latter's right eye in the first round Gathered on a little island such as this, sparring with each other day in and day out, you would naturally expect the fighters to be a bit chummier than boxers arc on the Mainland But this "my pal" stuff has got to be forgotten when the boys step through the ropes When mention was made of sending Valdez against Gildo in a return bout instead of Moro, the only excuse the matchmaker could make was: "Gildo doesn't want to fight Valdez." Why? Certainly, Gildo doesn't fear the Blake-lad It's another of those palsy-walsy cases.

3" fc LET'S HAVE A SHOW DOWN RIGHT NOW THE BOXING COMMISSION has shown its spunk In reversing Friday's decision They shouldn't stop at this I'm in 1 favor of having a real showdown right now This business of making personal friends out of certain individuals immediately connected with the fighters and ignoring others should cease And it is also about time a halt was called on some of the set-ups that the promoter has been feeding to the fans I would also I call in Mister Moro and some of the Filipino leaders and give them to understand that fights around here are not going to be 1 conducted according to their rules They must be taught to take the sour with the sweet I would also check Matchmaker i Choo's card a little more carefully Choo has his likes and dis- likes He overpays some fighters and underpays others I They've got to take it or like it when Choo is spending his money I Honolulu is as good a fight town as you will find anywhere Joe and Mrs. Public will always support a half-way decent card And there is plenty of talent available to present one good program a week and if the present promotorial setup can't give it to them, then I say let's have a little competition I'm not go-l ing berserk but right here and now is the time for an honest-to-goodness showdown Yes sir! dooming college football?" Several of the collegiate brothers and sisters laughed at that question, considering it absurd; today they do not laugh. Ss -V rr Professional contests which out-draw the Yale-Harvard game are no longer Inconceivable, no longer even exceptional. They are the rule in New By GEORGE KIRKSEV (United Fress Stuff Correspondent) NEW YORK, Feb. 1 Major league trading may start in earnest Monday when the meeting of the National League owners opens.

Except for Connie Mack's steady dismantling the Philadelphia Athletics, there has been practically no trading thus far. Jim Breadon and Branch Rickey, high moguls of the St. Louis Cardinals, are en route to the meeting in search for another pitcher to aid the Dean brothers in the 1936 campaign. It was reported they desire Fred Frankhouse or Van Mungo. If the Cards get their man, the Chicago Cubs will be forced to seek more mound strength to match that of the Cards.

Otherwise, Charley Grimm's 1935 pennant winners may find themselves otymied before the season gets well started. In the American League, the Chicago White Sox are seeking talent for their outfield. The Yankees may enter the player market because Col. Jake Ruppert is understood to want another pennant and it is generally agreed the Yanks stand little chance of getting one with their present lineup. The Brooklyn Dodgers have already been involved in a Jew deals, but they need another catcher and Casey Stengel hopes to find one at next week's gathering.

In reversing the verdict of Refer Andy Biddle, the commission mat it clear that in doing so. it did not question the honesty of Referee Bia. die, who is regarded as one of the best arbiters in local boxing. One A the most popular fighters in the lands in days of the famous serrice fights, the commission realized the ability of Biddle to call a winner, but in this instance, the fistic solcai figured that he was in error as othtn have been in the past and voted, that it would be for the best Interest of the game to reverse his verdict SET PRECEDENT This was the first time such actloc has been taken by the commission and the fistic solons were reluctaai to set the precedent. But after lengthy huddle they decided that it was the popular move.

The lightweight championship ra not awarded to Moro because he weighed in over the weight limit for this class, which is 135 pounds. Ha official weight for the fight was 131 pounds, although George Blake, manager of Sonny Valdez, insisted that lie scale down to the contracted weight of 135 pounds. The best Moro could do was to drop three-fourth of i pound, after which Blake consented to go on with the fight. REFEREE'S REPORT In his report to the commission Referee Biddle said that he disqualified Moro in the third and fourth rounds for landing low He awarded Valdez the second and fifth rounds and gave Moro the sixth. The rest were scored even.

The authority of the commissira to reverse the dicision of the referee was questioned during the mating. The commissioners insisted thtf they had the right to take any e-tion they saw fit in connection viSh the game. George Blake told the commission that he thought Valdez was entitled to the decision; that Moro had land ed several foul blows. The vote of the eommish unanimous. And, strangely enough, here in the mid-Pacific it will face one of the best football clubs of the season. I saw EARL HENRY "Dutch" Clark, quarterback and captain of the Detroit Lions, is not a perfect back since the game has never produced a perfect back (and never will produce one), but Clark probably comes nearer to perfection than any back modern football has known. He is, to resort to a much abused expression, a coach's dream come true. DOES EVERYTHING the Detroit Lions play the Westwood Cubs in Los Angeles last month.

They went through this Pacific Coast team as a child skips rope down the sidewalk. But and here is the good part for those of us who will see the game Sunday the all-star lads who will play the Lions in Honolulu could have done the same thing against the Cubs. And that set me to thinking that "Gimlet" Shaw might make a good match for Johnny Santiago, the sensational larruper from Waialua. Santiago whipped Tony Medeiros last Monday night.

With Me-deiros out of the way, there is no middleweight in the local amateur circle capable of exchanging greetings with Santiago. So if J.
