of the company in Fresno has contracted the logging to the Fortier Transportation Company The company mill is located 51 miles from Fresno on Highway 41 It is the operating plan of the company to begin operations within the next 10 days after logging is completed on privately owned lands The sale ia a virgin stand of timber and this harvest is the first step in placing the stand under forest management practice Only the over mature trees and those unlikely to live until the next cut is made in 20 to 30 years will be marked for cutting In an old stand of this type the growth put on each year is balanced by losses in the unthrifty and high risk trees After cutting the remaining trees are the best trees in the stand and aa a result a net growth will be obtained Beattie said that in connection with this sale existing roads will be improved and new roads will be built and maintained The new roads will be built on a location which will hold soil runoff to a minimum The slash and debris resulting from the operation will be piled and burned along roads and selected ridges thereby forming firebreaks from which it will be possible to fight a forest fire The slash adjacent to tractor skid trails where logs are pulled or skidded will be chopped up and placed in the skid trails The forest headquarters noted this also is a measure designed to prevent loss of soil by water movement Provisions also have been made to plant openings thin the stand ana to Improve the quality of the cutover stand by pruning and thinning Pruning tne branches from the trunk of the tree will makp the growth of clear wood possible in a much shorter time than would be possible naturally Beattie stated that by thinning or weeding out the less valuable trees the added growth will be on the valuable species thus increasing the vglue of the remaining stand This type of work is made possible under the provisions of the Knutson-Vanden-burgh Act which provides a deposit in addition to the
