12 THE MANCHESTER GUARDIAN, FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1934 NEWTON HEATH. (C. maj. 1,244.) Fishwick V. Vnm TjTvY 1 KS9.

LABOUR'S DAY IN MANCHESTER MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS Tories Lose Eight Seats and Liberals One HOUSING COMMITTEE CHIEFS AMONG THE FALLEN HEYWOOD Two Labour Cains At Heywood Labour gained two seats from the Liberals and the Conservatives gained one from Ratepayers. Robinson, who failed by less than 200 votes in Newton Heath, and Mr. F. J. Riley, who lost the strong Labour ward of Bradford by 1,538. Those who had been hoping to see the return of Lady Simon to her work on the City Council were bitterly disappointed; ehe polled only 180 below the retiring member at Wythenshawe and this in spite of the presence of a Labour candidate who gathered nearly 2,000 vote3 and who undoubtedly divided the progressive ranks From yesterday's results two facts emerge the first that there is increasing discontent with the Conservative policy initiated Lhree years ago, the second that Manchester at least has no use for any kind of pact agreed upon by the two older parties with the avowed object of defeating Labour at all costs.

That in spite of the pact, which was observed in all the wards contested by Labour, the two parties lost nine seats and the majorities as a general rule were reduced by a substantial figure would suggest that Liberal electors tended either to abstain or to vote Labour. Polling in the municipal elections in Manchester, yesterday, resulted in the most severe defeat which the Conservative party has yet received in the city. Labour held every seat which it defended and gained eight Conservative scats. It also gained one seat at the expense of the Liberals. The extent of the Conservative defeat was shown not only by the number of losses to the party but also by the narrow majorities by which they held a number of the seats they defended.

In several cases the total Conservative poll was less than the Conservative majority of three years ago, a state of affairs which in Conservative quarters was attributed to apathy on the part of the electors. 1931 AVENGED In 1931 the Conservatives gained seven Labour seats, one Independent, and one Liberal seat. Labour did not gain a single seat, and, in addition to the seven seats lo-t to the Conservatives, they lost on? to the Liberals. Yesterday not only did Lahour make good these losses 'jut an additional seat was won. One of the striking results of the election has been the greatly reduced majorities of the Conservatives and Liberals in the suburban and residential wards.

The seats gained lv Labour were All Saints', Ardwick, Bradford, Collyhurst, Harpurhev, Miles Plattinc, New Cross, Newton Heath, and St. George's (their solitary gain from the Liberals). The medical representation on the city council is strencthend by two of the Labour victor? Dr. Ciiadwick, who was returned for Miles Platting, and Nurse Griffiths, who defeated Mr. Sam Fitton in New Cross.

Tiie only other woman wbo ii a new-comer to the council is Miss A. Horan. HOUSING COMMITTEE SHOCKS One of the hardest blows to the Conservatives has been the defeat of both the LABOUR IN SALFORD TO WAIT A YEAR FOR CONTROL Power to Reverse the Aldermanic Balance In the fifteen contests in Salford Labour gained six seats from the Conservatives and one from the Independents, but as the Conservatives regained the Bocks scat won by Labour at a by-cloction the net result is a Labour gain of six seats, which increases the group's strength on the council to 27. This gives the party a majority of three over the anti-Labour combination of councillors. The position now is that Labour lias gnined control of the election of aldermen, should any vacancy arise during the next twelve months, and if, in November next.

Labour retains this dominance, they will have the power to defeat the re-election of eight opposing aldermen who will then retire. One of the most striking victories is that of Mr. Walter Greenwood, the author, who in his second attempt to enter the council has secured a majority of "50 from the retiring Independent in a three-cornered contest in St. Matthias's Ward, where the Communist candidate polled only 81 votes.
