An Editor's Career.

The Bonham (Tex as) Independent, of the 2d inst, comes to us in mourning for tbe death of its editor and pro. prietor, Mr. Johh Milton Crane, who, on the 30th was shot down in the street, by Matthew Saddler. Crane had, a Short time before, struck Saddler with a walking cane Saddler discharged one barrel of a double bar. reled gun at him, at a shfHTdistance Crane received at leasttyeive buckshot in his body, and fell crying "Murder." Saddler ran to the back door of the house, where he was enscon ced, ordered a negro to saddle a horse instantly.

but without waiting, sprang on tbe horse, and disappeared at full speed. Nothing has since been heard of him. Crane was taken home and his wounds pro nounced mortal. He lingered in great agbnv for four hours. He retained his senses to the last.

His distracted wife hung around bia bed soothing and comforting him in his great trial. His two children, one an infant of only four months, and the other some two years were, unconscious of tbe deep tragedy passing before their eves, cooing and playing about his pillow. Occasionally the mother would raise them up to kiss their djing father, who, to the very last, seemed' only concerned about their future welfare. Crane was a native of Frankfort, he was born in May, 1824. Before he was eleven jears of age, having heard of the revolutionary struggle in Texas, he ran away from home to join the Texans, and arrived at GalveBton just after the battle of San Jacinto He was accidentally poisoned found sick by a friend of the family, and taken home.

He had in the meantime loet father and mother Of his own accord, he entered a rinting office and worked bardlearning his trade 6y day, and studying by night by the feeble light of bits of candle that he picked up about the' office. When the Crittenden expedition to Cuba was organized, Crane vas one of its most active friends, and canvaii several of the Southern to raise means for it, After tbe failure of the expedition, he returned to the printing' business, and established a paper, called tba Democrat, at Boonville, Mo, In a couple of years, he sold out removed to Tennessee; started another paper; again sold out; removed to Texas; started a paper at Goliad; again sold out; purchased the hotel at Indianola married a niece of lion. Mr. Orr, of South Carolina got tired of hotel keeping; removed to Bonham; started the Independent and was doing well, when his career was sadly and bloodily ended. (7 Me wrs.

Navy Yard, died there on the 9th. The great political error of a few men of the South has been to declare that a given event occurring, or a certain act being per formed, she is determined forthwith to resort to extreme measures for protection.

The adnusaion of Californin as a free State, and afterwards the success of the opponents of slavery in Kansas, were affirmed by aev eral Southern men as justifiable causes for secession from the Union. Before the result was ascertained, many politicians in the South had expressed their determination to regard such action as a signal for organization for resistance. Tet tbe events happened in due order of time, without producing any shock to the Union, or being followed by any nnusua movement in the Southern States. At this moment the election of William II Seward, or any other probable candidate of the Black Republican party, to the Presidency, it is affirmed, will be a virtual release of the South from its allegiance to the con. stitution.

The postion is a false one. It is impossible to predict the consequence of such an event, should it come to be among the things that are probable. Opinions that are expressed with the object of acquiring popular votes are not always made the basis of aetion in responsible public stations. Abstract principles often be come so modified when reduced to their to an exciting state 'of affaira, that, they seem absolutely to have been abandoned It is not Improbable that an administration which was placed in power by a party ostensibly hostile to the South, should such an even ever happen, may be found scarcely less fav orable to our constitutional rights than others preceding it which had been elected nnder different influences. As sensible men, therefore, the people of the South should lay down no specifio point at which constitutional resistance shall cease; designate no possible future event as decidinfr the course of action of the slave States.

To day we must provide for present neces sities; prepare to remedy present evils; leav ing the future to take care of itself. So many circumstances may exist to modify the effect of a future event, that it is impoaaible to judge beforehand of the course pointed out by true wisdom. It seems ss though many Southern men were determined in their course of action, not by conviction of the soundness of the princi ples upon which it is based, but by the fact that is the most offensive possible to the Northern Abolitionists. The new fever for the reopening of the slave trade has its origin, doubtless, more in this conviction than in any examination of its actual results upon the prosperity of the South. And these men, who seem to have become possessed with this idea as tbe remedy for a thousand fancied ills, are ready to declare, if the laws declaring the slave trade piracy be not repealed, the South must set up for herself.

In this eager strife to defy and exasperate thostt who are mad with fanaticism at the North, the South is likely to neglect, and per haps to endanger the success of a policy in which she is vitally interested. Thrust the negro entirely out of our counsels. Let him not decide every act bearing upon our interest at home and abroad. Dethrone him from the dictatorship in politics, the superiority in conventions and electoral colleges. which he has come to exercise, and let us look to the importance of making the Gulf of Mex ico an American sea of acquiring, if possible by honorable means, the Island of Cuba H)f exercising a predominating influence in Centra' America and reconstructing the distracted Government of Mexico; a These are true Southern as well as national questions.

We need this development We would open these new fields of consumption and enterprise. should hold predominant influence over the future highway of the world's commerce. Then we have the Pacific railroad, with its varied ramifications, to complete an enter, prise which promises more than any other which has ever been projected. fly Tbe Democratic press of Kentucky is almost unanimous in the expression of a preference for Hon. What the Last Congreee Did and Didn't. Tbe National Intelligencer says that Congress, at its late session, passed thirty two acts ana nine joint resolutions of a public character, and sixty acts and six resolutions relating to private claims.

Each House left on its calendar a large mass of unfinished business and a' considerable amount ia tbe hands of committees ready to be reported whenever the rules permitted. Amongst tbe subjects lying over, in the Senate, there were one hundred and fifty bills of a public nature, and more than one hundred private In the House there were left on the calendar upwards of sixty publie bills and lover two hundred private bills. All these bills died with the Coogreet itself, and can onlv be resuscitated through the standing" eommittees upon a new presentation of each case. This state of things, the iDtelligencer thinks, would indicate that, whatever may be thought of the extent of the fir session Coo Kress, the second, it alto 8 ether too short for the proper despatch of the rapidly accumulating business of this great and growing country.
