Schober Fresno Bee staff photographer Spring Choral Fete Is Set In Merced i MERCED Merced Co The 'second annual Spring Choral Festival featuring pupils of the Men ced City Elementary School District will be presented at the Merced High School athletic field Thursday at 2:30 PM -Catherine Lilley music instructor for the district will direct the group in an original production America The Beautiful The program will tell the story of America from the days of the Pilgrims to the modern era Miss Lilley also will direct the 1500 voice chorus accompanied by Mrs Lesta Harter and Lyle Chapin Pageantry Chandler Pushes Probe In Death Of Jailed Youth MADERA Madera Co The body of Earl Pond 20 who died alter a Pacheco Pass Highway automobile accident was sent to Bakersfield lor burial while an investigation into the circumstances- surrounding his death was being pressed by District Attorney Walter Chandler Chandler said he will question everyone connected with arrest and -jailing early Thursday and is seeking possible witnesses to the accident in which Fond was hurt Booked As Drunks Pond and Elmer Pollock 23 both of Arvin were booked as drunks in the Madera County Jail alter the car In which they were riding driven by Don Killian 20 also ol Arvin hit a telephone pole Chandler said his investigation indicates Killian fell asleep at the wheel Pollock and Pond were in the rear seat Killian was not held Highway Fatrolman George Corbin who said Pond and Pollock drunk" took them to jail Six hours later when neither had regained consciousness they were rushed to the Madera County Hospital where Pond died ol head Injuries shortly alter arrival Hospital attendants said condition remains serious Sheriff Justice said he was In the jail office when Corbin arrived at 8 AM with Pond and Pollock and asked Jailer Walter Brown to book them Questioned Officer Justice declared he questioned Corbin as to whether the men had been -in an accident and whether they had been given medical attention The sheriff tsaid Corbin told him he and a Chowchilla tow car operator who had been called to the scene had looked them over and assured him both were drunk Justice said Pond had to be carried into the jail while Pollock was able to walk with two trusties -holding him up Justice declared that later in the day a trusty Informed him both men were unconscious and he immediately called an ambulance and sent them to the Madera County Hospital They were received there at 2:33 PM and Pond died an hour and 45 minutes later Dr John Dickinson the medical director said Pond appeared to be in deep when he arrived but responded slightly to pressure over the right eye The doctor said Pond was placed in a bed with railings around it so he would not fall out Dr Dickinson said both men were examined for external injuries but none was apparent at first Later he said it was found Pollock had a broken left collar-bone He said both men were given intravenous injections of glucose An autopsy showed Pond died of a head injury condition is listed as serious and he still was unconscious last night 1 Stroke Is Found Death Cause For Man At Tollhouse A post mortem examination has revealed Jens Alexander Donsted S3 who was found dead in the Tollhouse Cemetery Friday after he had wandered away Wednesday was the victim of a heart attack Private funeral services will be conducted Monday in the chapel of the Lisle Funeral Home Rev Christian Justesen of the Bethel Lutheran Church will conduct the funeral services Burial will be in the Belmont Memorial Park Donsted a retired vineyard-ist was cn route from Bowie Ariz to Cedar Crest near Huntington Lake with a daughter in law Mrs Herman Donsted She told sheriffs officers he got out of their automobile when she stopped at Tollhouse at his request and refused to get back into the vehicle Instead she said he started walking down the road She sought the aid of Constable Fred Crabb of Huntington Lake but in the meantime Donsted disappeared A search Wednesday night and Thursday failed to locate him and his body was found Friday morning Hie daughter in law told the officers he had spent the Winter in and was going to Huntington Lake for the Summer according to his custom Donsted was a native of Denmark He had lived at intervals in the Fresno area for the past 3G years lie is survived by three sons Herman of Bowie Ariz and Huntington the climax of a day of intermingled rehearsal and fun at the first annual All Elementary School Bandjoree here' The bands were those of the Washington Elementary School of Dinuba directed by Michael Serbu the Hanford Elementary Schools directed by A Thomas Henson Kingsburg Elementary Schools directed by Richard Bayard Lincoln Elementary School of MaHera directed by Wayne Edwards Hoover Elementary School Merced directed by Richard Lewis Taft Elementary School Sanger directed by Cecil Mahurin Roosevelt Elementary School Selma directed by Harley Freeman and Reedley Elementary Schools directed by Chandler Henderson 3Iasxed Bands Tlay The musical climax of the evening was the performance of the entire group under the baton of William A Schaefer director of bands at the University of Southern California Prior to the massed performance each of the hands presented a maneuver of its own on ceived a letter from her son Private Richard Bridgeforth who is in a hospital in Japan The 19 year old Reedley soldier was wounded In a mine explosion during the fighting on the Korean front Mrs Bridgeforth said her son did not write anything about where or how badly he was wounded Bridgeforth was a
