SCREEN THE OBSERVER 21 NOVEMBER 1999 15 RADIO As the twentieth century draws to an end, BBC radio seems busier than ever in its attempt to roundup the most important figures and cul tural works of the last 100 years. Centurions (Radio 3, 4.15pm) discusses Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, while The Sunday Feature Viewing the Century (Radio 3, 5.45pm) triumphantly nets Susan Sontag. A formidable writer known primarily for her distinguished essays on subjects ranging from philosophy to pornography, she talks to Noah Richler about her latest work, which has included directing Waiting for Godot in Sarajevo and publishing an article about the role of women to accom pany photographs by Annie Leibovitz. In The BBC Archive (Radio 3, 2.45pm), nov elist Michele Roberts reminds us of three remarkable women from the past Dame Ethel Smyth, the composer and suffragette, Dame Myra Hess, the pianist, and Kathleen Ferrier, the admired contralto for whom Ben- MATCH OF THE DAY Ford Super Sunday: Sheffield Wednesday West Ham Utd (Sky Sports 1, 3pm). jamin Britten wrote The Rape of Lucretia.

Can Benito Carbone (above) help his side Sheffield Wednesday to overcome the Hammers? Roberts admits that hearing Ferrier singing The Messiah moves her to tears, partly because it comforted her after the death of her sister, who like Ferrier herself, died in her 40s. Yet this loud, almost chant-like singing, using a simplified musical scale, has survived since the early eighteenth century and certainly has its dedicated followers today.
