lec. Last year, according to Coronet, the Walker company, now known as Talon, made 490,000,000 zippers and income totalled $30,679,622. "MAY," SAYS Changing Times, The Kiplinger Magazine, "is month of flowers." It is also the month of strikes, not only in Hawaii but on the Mainland. And it is the month of further price decline. Some clothing and textiles -may go a bit lower, but not much, for they are approaching stabilization.

The cost of living will slip down a notch or so a month for the next few months and grocery bills will ease off a little more. On the Mainland that is, but not likely in Hawaii if we are to be strikebound again for any length of time, either by the waterfront workers or the sugar workers who are threatening to. pull their strike soon. As a matter of fact, if the waterfront strike continues, plantations will be forced, one by one, to close down operations because the saturation point is being reached in storage space. If this occurs, workers laid off will go on the relief rolls.

That's what we pay taxes for, chum. Back again on the Mainland, John L. Lewis is cooking up another coal strike, according to Kiplinger, unless miners get higher hourly pay, a shorter work week and bigger royalties for health, welfare and pensions. Another coal strike is bound to hurt business. Operators on the island of Molokai may now dial direct to any subscriber in Honolulu. With the completion of this installation by Mutual Telephone radio technicians all of the six major islands in the. Hawaiian group are connected by radio dialing circuits. The radio dialing system used between Molokai and Oahu is the same as that previously installed between Hawaii and Maui. Service between these two islands and Oahu was opened in January of 1948 followed by inauguration of service to Kauai in July of the same year and more recently to the island of Lanai in April of 1949.
