Late News Ed Will Go Live NEW YORK -- UPI -- Ed Sullivan's CBS hour will originate as a live presentation from the Deauville Hotel in Miami Beach on February 16th. Wilt YOU ACCEPT A \ HOUR NEW YORK--Bill Downs, a globe trotting veteran correspondent and recipient of numerous awards for outstanding foreign news reporting, has joined ABC News, Elmer W. Lower, president of ABC News, Special Events and Public Affairs, announced. Downs, whose background of top foreign coverage includes the Normandy invasion, wartime Russia, the surrender of all German forces in northwestern Germany, atom bomb tests, the Berlin airlift, and the Korean War, will work out of ABC News' Washington bureau. After midnight of the day President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, when Secretary of State Dean Rusk's plane landed at Andrews AFB outside of Washington, his arrival was reported by Bill Downs. Downs had been scheduled to join ABC News the following month, but at the time of the shooting he was pressed into service by Lower. William R. Downs, Jr., became a member of the CBS News staff in London in September, 1942, after five years with the United Press. Assigned in the winter of 1942 to the CBS bureau in Moscow, he remained in Russia until January, 1944. After a brief visit to the United States, he returned to Europe in time to cover D Day, landing with the British forces in Normandy. Downs covered the United States First and Ninth Armies, allied with the British and Canadian armies, during the entire European campaign. After VE Day, Downs received the National Headliners Club Award for "the outstanding f o r e i g n exclusive broadcast of 1944-45" -- his eye witness account of the surrender to Field Marshal Montgomery of all German forces in northwestern Germany, Holland and Denmark. Reassigned in August, 1945, to the Pacific theater, Downs arrived in Manila on VJ Day, entered Tokyo with the occupation forces and covered the Japanese surrender. AD 3-7179 COUSIN--Patty McCormack, who has scored numerous successes on Broadway as a child actress, will have the title role in the Cousin Helga Comes To Dinner segment of The Farmer's Daughter, KJEO, 47, Wednesday at 8:30 PM. After covering the rising strike crisis in the United States, Downs was assigned in June, 1946, to report the atomic bomb tests off Bikini Atoll. It was he who made the pool broadcast of the historic tests to all American networks. In 1947 Downs revisited the towns and cities crossed by allied troops in World War II to gather material for a documentary, We Went Back. Later that y e a r he opened news bureau in Detroit to cover the auto strikes and was first with news of the attempted assassination of Walter Reuther. He went overseas again in September, 1948, to cover the Berlin blockade by the Rus- sions and the US' Berlin airlift. Downs received the 1949 Overseas Press Club Award for "best foreign news reporting" that year. His next major assignment came in 1950 when he was sent to Korea and covered the retreat of the United States and Republic of Korea troops to the Pusan perimeter. He traveled with both candidates (Eisenhower and Stevenson) in the 1952 presidential campaigns, and the following year was assigned to Rome as Mediterranean correspondent. Among his accomplishments were exclusive i n t e r views with Archbishop Makarios in covering the beginning of the revolt of Cyprus, and with Israeli Premier Ben Gurion and Egyptian President Nasser, in covering the Arab- Israeli dispute from both sides. Downs again received an Overseas Press Club citation for his work. As a member of the CBS News bureau in Washington in 1956, Downs covered the Democratic and GOP conventions, and the second Eisenhower election. Born on August 17, 1914, in Kansas City, Kan., Downs attended elementary and high school there, and in 1937 was graduated from the University of Kansas. Factory Direct Prices!
