of the fact that It had a musical organisation la this 1 symphonic group of which it can weU ha prouJ Of thorough symphonic pro port lone tha orchestra has the complete instrumentation required for such music and the necessary proficiency In every Instrument to give a thoroughly adequate reading of any score Mora Violins Needed The organization suffers this year from the lack of a first violin section of sufficient strength The orchestra la not alone a college project -but gets considerable support from the outside musicians of the city and this Fall two or three of tho leading violinists who were abla to contribute their services last season have been unable to attend rehearsals Truman Hutton at tha first desk gives his usual leadershiu to the section and to tha whole organization but needs both a larger and a more experienced group of players behind him But in certain respects organisation surpasses the fine orchestra ho brought together last year Tha great variety of solo passages were better sung last night than in any concert before Pre'vdes which closed the program otter a rather harassing array of single passages for horn and woodwinds These without exception were handled moat expertly Arthur Forsbled the director of tha college bend has deliberately mad himself into an oboist to fill a need at tha school and hie jrork last night on this difficult instrument wee exceptionally satisfactory Margot Owen flutist Lend Shuck clarinetist A1 Chsddock baasonist and John Johnson French horn all made flawless contributions to a treacherous score This le tha flret year that the college has been blessed with the tympanist capable of handling a symphonic score among Its enrolled students It was a joy to watch the professional expertness and to sense tha thorough musjk clanship of Jacques Neill- In the percussion department Ha la a distinct addition to tha musical department at the college As in previoue concerts Malcolm Davison as tha leader of the section contributed an appreciable degree of stability to tha whole ensemble Program Is Well Chosen Tha program was selected admirably The Mozart flat Symphony gave a convincing and satisfying beginning The refinement and delicacy of thie great classicist puts a heavy burden on an amateur orchestra and it was a courageous thing to attempt The four movements however were reed carefully end effectively with a nice appreciation of their lyric character The Chaus son Poems brought Samuel Hungerford violinist on the-mualcal faculty at the college to the platform as soloist It wsi tbs universal opinion of last night's crowded house that this accom-plLhed musician has never appeared to better advantage before a local audience than In this romantic and emotional composition of Chausson Tha number is seldom played though aU violinists recognize it as one of tha moat truly viollnlstie end musiclally concerted work" for violin end orchestra It Is warm and ecstatic In the style of the last half of nineteenth century French music with beautifully melodic passages end breathless climaxes in which the whole orchestra takes the theme ewey from the soloist In sweeping crescendos It cells not only for a sparklinglv clear teehnie but a warmth of tona that is responsive to its own emotion Hungerford exhibited the wide range of hia musicianship in hie fine performance The program closed with the particularly grateful composition of Liszt known ae Lee Preludes based upon Lamartine's Poetical Meditations Few symphonic works ere more Imaginative end more thoroughly satisfying to an audl ence than this Here as throughout the program Berdahl displayed those qualities of leadership that have dona so much to bring up symphonic standards at tha college His direction is virile and po-itive hia musicianship is both sound and sincere and his enthusiasm is boundless These are the qualities of which really great conductors era made 'Ghost' Confesses Bombardment Of House May End One of the who
