I More Than $1500000 To Be Paid In Wages During Peak Operations Mora than $1500000 In wages will be paid to nearly 6000 am ployea of Fresno's dried fruit pack ing plants during tha fourteen week peak period of the 1935 pack i ing season for raisins fige peaches land other fruits This was disclosed yesterday in a survey of eleven of the packing 'plants operating within the city A scattering of plants in nearby rural districts and tha employment for the entire packing season will provide an aggregate Income for the workers in excess of $2500000 the packers said Many Now Employed I The various plants In Freano I now have in excess of 4000 em ployes and will reach their em ployment peak about the second week in October due to the late maturity of the 1935 raisin crop The wage scale remains the same as last year with men receiving 40 cents an hour and women work era 331-3 cents except where they do piece work for which they re celve a higher scale Officials of ths various plants the employment to be divided among 4000 men and ap proxlmately 2000 women The employment peak will continue for fourteen weeks during which the employes work an eight-hour day and aix-day week During other periods they work a five-day week On thia basis the daily payrolls of the ten leading dried fruit plants in Fresno wilt aggregats I nearly $110000 and tha total for the peak season approximately $1540000 Labor Supply Is Adequate Packing plant officials say there is no shortage of labor although there ia not the surplus of work era which has existed during the last few years Many skilled trades workers who have sought packing house employ- -ment in recent years have not applied for work thia season one packer said being occupied in tha various building trades due to the increase in new construction work throughout the city Estimates by various packing concerns of their peak employment in Fresno plants during the cur rent dried fruit season follow: Rosenberg Bros and Company 1700
