THE OBSERVER, SUNDAY 22 JUNE 1980 32 Extraordinary feats Courage and cowardice by PHILIP FRENCH listen to Gaye himself. Then a line delivered by that characteristically hoarse falsetto voice suddenly commanded attention and one 'realised what a beautiful voice it is mellow and incisive and, to use the correct term, soulful. Like his stage presence it has a kind of passionate elegance about it, at once proud and vulnerable. Of all the MoKvwn singers, he seems to have the gift of communicating with a live audience. Stevie Wonder could, no doubt, stagger us with his ingenuity; Diana Ross is achingjly beautif ul and her job inside out; but Marvin Gaye is a born, instinctive performer.

Seasoned artist he may be, but he is also a natural, an earthy spirit who at least gives the impression of acting on the inspiration of. the moment. At- 40, Marvin Gaye is an unlikely sex idol. He dresses fairly conservatively and his hair is noticeably thinning, WHY IS IT that black pop 'singers can overact so outrageously and yet not cause embarrassment to their audience Take Marvin Gaye, for example. He pulls every trick in the book he makes corny little speeches about universal love, gets girls up from the audience to dance with him on stage, and indulges in medleys of old hits and positive orgies of nostalgia without inducing a moment's discomfort.

The answe: liesynot in his stagecraft, nsum mate though it is, but in his idiom. Behind the supplicating gestures and ingratiating, smile is a musical tradition of great age and subtlety; derived equallyvfrdm the; church and showbusinessi When he is per-' orming he is' touched, with the Spirit, to wallow in emotional excess, 'and everyone accepts the fact. The cold, critical eye sees DAVE GELLY on a great Motown performer. how it is done, but cannot really account for the effect. It all comes down to rhythm in the end, the sinuous beat with tricky interjections laid down by a 10-piece band and three backing singers.

Gaye has complete freedom within it to deploy a phrase, elaborate an idea or simply dance around the stage. He knows that his wonderfully elastic structure will accommodate whatever he decides to' do, and it gives him confidence to. get away with extraordinary feats. He can expand a line to breaking-point or, cut it Off with a snap of his fingers and the backing will close' around him. The band was so impressive during Sunday's concert at the Rainbow Theatre that one, occasionally forgot to Marvin Gaye A passionate elegance, -rr: but his movements are live and youthf ul as ever.

For the young men in the ence, in their diSSn" casual's, he obviously repre- sented some kind of idea3C black dance-floor Valentino, the eternal ladykiHer. Judging from the way tKSjfc squeaked, the girls thoughfSB1 too. Graciously he acknjy0 ledged their applause and left the stage sweating discreetly. 1 BRIEFING I Catherine Deneuve as the chanteuse In Courage pher Strong in which, back in 1933, Katherine Hepburn made her second screen appearance. He's better looking than Dean Martin, a more accomplished fallabout clown than Jerry Lewis, so it's quite plausible that in his latest film, Courage Fuyons (Curzon, AA), he can attract the beautiful Catherine Deneuve, yet prove a hopelessly incompetent suitor.

"As in Pardon My Affair and its sequel; Pardon My Affair Rochefort plays another of those repressed, cliild-like figures that currently dominate French popular, comedy. Once more he's a -desperate middle aged, middle-class Parisian attempting to escape from his cage of domestic respectability and embark on a passionate adventure. But the character he' plays, one Martin Bel-honime, isn't just trapped by a stern wife, disagreeable children and a dull iob (running a pharmacy). He has, too, a heritage of extreme cowardice, unfolded in a lengthy flashback. In 1916 grandfather raised the white flag and surrendered his platoon at the first (accidental) burst of German machine-gun fire on the Western Front.

In 1938 his father handed over his factory to the workers in a national strike, and when the Germans invaded he took his family to hide in a Jewish household down In Toulouse. During the 1968 evenements Martin demonstrates his courage by picking up a truncheon for a cop one minute and helping students destroy his own new car the next. After "this egregious display, Martin can't face going home, and winds up instead wicli a beautiful chanteuse, Eva Silver (Deneuve). He follows her to Amsterdam, pretends he's a thriller writer, and Bhey start an affair, which ends when Eva's former lover threatens his life. Martin then returns home, pretending to be an amnesiac.

And so it goes. Given the immense talent of i the leading actor and a passably inventive plot that has echoes of certain Danny Kaye vehicles from the 1940s, Courage Fuyons provokes mirth than it should. sound cinema's first Dr vau.c Frankenstein) appears as the Office Code was ngidly en-Tory Minister, Sir Christo- forced. They have worked with Rochefort often before, and clearly he is another of those stars whose progress has been impeded by the directorial wagons hitched to them. Dirk Bogarde's development was adversely affected by his long association with Ralph Thomas, that of Paul Newman by has decision to make film after film with Stuart Rosenberg. One would like to see Rochefort work again with a director worthy of him as Tavernier was, back in 1973, when rhe actor gave one of his best performances in the relatively straight role of the sympathetic police inspector in 'The Watchmaker of St Courage Fuyons is the week's only new- commercial offering, but -at the ICA there's an odd little half-hour picture called Amy, co-directed by Laura Mulvey and one of this country's leading film theorists, Peter Wollen.

and designed to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Amy Johnson's solo flight to Australia. It begins with some inarticulate teenage girls talking about heroism; Mary Maddox sits in a bedroom reading the aviatrix's diaries and walks down the street in a flying helmet; the hazardous journey to Australia is conveyed by a camera tracking over a map as a voice reads contemporary headlines from The Times; Jack Hylton's band plays 'Amy, Wonderful Amy' in extenso over a long take of her Gypsy Moth Jason hanging in the Science Museum. At the service of some theory of communication, the film communicates little, and does not even point out that it was the cycle of late 1920s flying pictures, and especially that helped inspire Amy. The day is however, by the ICA's decision to accompany Amy with a revival of Dorothy Arzner's romantic melodrama Christo- hunt to hnd a woman over neasiae lamp ana piayiug with a travelling clock as two 20 who has never had an affair and a man who has been faithful to his wife for five years. Made in Taiwan in 1969, this tale of a timid provincial Chinese portrait painter, getting involved in imperial machinations during the Ming dynasty is an amazing achievement intelligent, imaginative, exciting, beautifully designed, though at three hours ovenlong and at times overblown.
