Saturday, Nov. 1964 HONOLULU ADVERTISER C-l CLA OPERATED ON FOR HERNIA T1 eJLy By JACK CUDDY BOSTON (UPI) Heavyweight champion Cassius Clay, underwent successful emergency surgery last night to correct a hernia which forced the indefinite postponement of his title rematch with Sonny Liston. The surgery, performed at Boston City hospital, was described by chief surgeon Dr. William McDermott as a "complete success." The operation took about an hour. MCDERMOTT SAID the abdominal weakness that led to the hernia had been present since Clay's birth but was not noticeable before last night.

Clay was stricken at his fight headquarters at the Sherry Biltmore Hotel shortly after eating a steak dinner." He was taken to the hospital by police ambulance. As soon as his illness was diagnosed, the promoters of the widely heralded Boston Garden rematch between him and Liston announced a postponement until Clay was sufficiently recovered to fight again. The fight had been scheduled for Monday night. The fight will still be held in Boston, probably some- time early next year, according to all sources. Clay was "very uncomfortable" when brought into the hospital, doctors said.

HOWEVER, THEY said, the 22-year-old champion might have gone several more hours before hospitalization without danger. When Clay arrived at the hospital, he turned to a doc-tor and said, "Doc, go ahead and fix it." Dr. McDermott said there would be no lasting affects from the hernia, which he described as "an incarcerated, inguinal or common hernia." A news conference was held following the operation by Dr. McDermott, Dr. George Starkey, a member of the operating team, and Dr.

Leon J. Taubenhaus, department superintendent. Dr. Thomas O'Brien also took part in the surgery. As in all hernias, it will require a week in the hospital and then a month of recuperation, McDermott said.

He said he would advise Clay "not to do any heavy work for at least three months." He said heavy work might include training. The surgeon called it an "easy" operation. Dr. McDermott said the swelling in Clay's abdomen was about the size of a lemon. Chairman Herman Green-berg of the Massachusetts Boxing Commission estimated that Boston's second world heavyweight championship match cannot be rescheduled until March or April.

"But it definitely will be held in Boston," Green-berg emphasized, "because all parties concerned are under contract to hold the fight in this city." Meanwhile Gov. Peabody and State Public Safety commissioner Robert W. McDonald ordered the state police to make a routine investigation of condi- Continued on page C-3 Is Postponed rrn I 26 0 SHIO.S9 holding penalty against Red-lands moved the ball to the 13. A few minutes later the Rainbows started marching again after Eric Soto fell on Dave Kramer's fumble on the Redlands 33. But Mojica fumbled on the six and Chuck etterson recovered for Redlands on the 10. Coach Jimmy Asato ran in his reserves after that and Redlands made its deepest penetration of the game in the final period.

Ikeda-made a spectacular catch as he was falling to the turf. The try for point failed, Moreno muffing the ball, and the half ended 50 seconds later.

The Rainbows struck for two more touchdowns in the third quarter. They drove 70 yards early in the period, going over in three plays. Apisa broke around right end for 11 and after Ronquilio picked up four and a 5-yard penalty against the Rainbows put the ball back on Hawaii's 40, Ronquilio took a handoff on a draw play and shot straight down the middle for 60 yards and touchdown. MORENO'S PASS on the PAT attempted failed with 10:20 left to play in the quarter. Later Bill Jordan returned a Redlands punt 43 yards to the visitors' 30.

A roughing penalty on the play moved the ball to the 15 and Apisa ran it over in three plays, going 6, 5 and 4 through the line. Ronquilio then passed to Norman Lau for a 2-point conversion and a 26-0 lead STATISTICS UH First downs 14 Yards rushinq 377 Yards lost rushinq 16 Net yards rushing ..261 Yards passing Total yards 273 Passes 2-1 Passes intercepted by 0 Punts Fumbles lost 3 Penalties 7-5S RU 49 49 0 74 74 13-7 0 1 3-38 Available only at RUSSELL'S DOWNTOWN Bishoa Hotel Union I All-Weather 42 OTHER SIZES EQUALLY LOW PRICED BUY NOW! By KENNY HAINA University of a a i i's Rainbows broke a 3-game intercollegiate losing streak last night by drubbing Red-lands University, 26-0, in the 34th annual Shrine Aloha Bowl football classic at Honolulu Stadium. THE POWER -RUNNING of fullback William Apisa and the passing and ball-carrying of Ben Ronquilio paced the Rainbows. The victory was the fourth straight over Redlands. Apisa bulled over for two touchdowns while Ronquilio ran 60 yards for one TD and passed to Albert Ikeda for another before a crowed of 10,351.

The muddy field, left a quagmire by heavy rains during the McKinley-Kalani game in the afternoon, handicapped the Redlands passing attack. HAWAII LED 12-0 at half-time, scoring twice in the second quarter after both teams played for the breaks in the opening period on the muddy field. The Rainbows took over on a punt on Redlands 42 and marched over in six plays on the power running of fullback William Apisa. After Ben Ronquilio gained four yards and Steve Moreno lost one, Apisa lugged the ball four straight times. He hit left tackle for six, then powered through right guard and bulled his way 26 yards to the seven before Dennis Schipke, a junior linebacker, brought him down.

With first and goal to go, Apisa picked up three yards at right guard and on the next play he shot through a gaping hole at right tackle for the final four yards with 10:18 left in the half. Thomas Mojica's kick on the PAT attempt was low. A FEW PLAYS later Albert Ikeda, an end, blocked Paul Riggins' punt and sophomore halfback Terry Tindall recovered for the Rainbows on the Redlands 13. In two carries Apisa boomed to the eight, then on the next play he drove to the three, where he fumbled and Terry Singleton, Redlands fullback, fell on Celtics Lose BOSTON (UPI) Elgin Baylor's two free throws with 20 seconds remaining gave the Los Angeles Lakers a 114-112 victory over the Boston Celtics last night and cut the i NBA champion's home victory streak at 17 games. The effort by Baylor, who tallied 36 points to pace the Lakers, was Boston's second loss in as many nights after they had run their opening season unbeaten streak at 11 before being toppled by Philadelphia Thursday night.
