BY NICOLA BARKER Life can be tough. TV can be tougher. But when everything's said and done, it's always good to know that even in a modern, strife-ridden and cynical world like ours, there are still some things, some (how to describe them?) some constants, which help to make the hard and mean and difficult times just that tiny little bit less soul-destroying a) Samantha Fox will always have a musical career in Germany; b) Johnny Vaughan will always be a preposterous flirt; c) illy Goolden will always be an innovative and outrageous fashion warrior; d) Malcolm Hardee (promoter and comedian of 1980s balloon dancing fame) will always get his bollocks out in public if given even the slightest whiff of an opportunity. There's no nice way to put this, but I'll put it anyway if there was a Eurovision for tackle, Malcolm Hardee would be its Johnny Logan. To say the man has not an ounce of shame would be to Not classically attractive, but possessing a certain, inexplicably sexy je ne sais quoi is the lovely Kulvinder Ghir of BBC2's Goodness Gracious Me (9.30pm) who returns tonight in the first of a new series of this very cheeky and always perfectly passable comedy show.

Mr Ghir whips up a veritable storm as a haughty Bollywood Darcy and offers some fine backing vocals to Meera Syal's delightfully embittered Punjabi rewrite of Aqua's Barbie Girl. Who could help but love Davina McCall? Tonight, Leeds and Exeter get a taste of her as she trawls these two towns in a pale blue dress and G-string hunting down a special Streetmate (Channel 4, 9.30pm in her ballsy 'Blind Date without the blinkers'. On her voyage she is lucky enough to bump into a market trader called Neil who owns 4,000 CDs, wears Nicole Farhi and drives a Vauxhall Calibra. exaggerate how much shame he has got. Hardee gives the word 'exhibitionist' not just a whole new meaning, but an entirely different calibration.

How apt, then, that he should be appearing tonight as a 'celebrity bouncer' on Channel 5's The People Jerry Sadowitz (10.40pm). Rumour has it that the People loved Jerry so much the first time around that they brought him back, double-quick, for a brand new series. And Channel 5 (no doubt dizzy with the delight of Jerry's televisual allure) have even forked out a bundle of cash for a theme tune, some props and some snappy new graphics. Good Lord! Next thing we know, Sadowitz will have become as much a part of the establishment he patently loathes as, say, Reggie Kray or the Acid Bath Murderer. To demonstrate this truth, he spends the opening 10 minutes dressed as Hitler, abusing his guests with traditional gusto, and only pausing for a moment to experience the strange phenomenon of a middle-aged man called Philip in a loud suit reciting a poem about how he manufactured a sex toy out of a melon and a cauliflower.

Behind him, all the while, mooches Hardee in his brown tweed, looking every inch like the kind of sweet, brown bear you might buy as a treat for your favourite daughter Sweet? I have personally had the honour of witnessing Hardee's penis four or five times on public occasions. It was for this reason that my knuckles whitened as precious minutes of the show ticked by. Until, at last, the inevitable happens: Jerry asks Malcolm to do an impression of General de Gaulle and Malcolm takes off his glasses and reaches for his trouser buttons. If you want to see the true face of male nudity, it's here. It's real.
