COLLEGE FOOTBALL Sunday, November 22,1998 Press Sun-Bulletin 5F Son's SU success enhances a dad's view from end zone Zereoue loses rushing battle, but West Virginia swamps BC sruwumHwl'ipw-ULW''-'Wi if EAST Bears draft choice, set it in 1992; Roland Williams had five last year and became the St. Louis Rams' fourth choice. Of much more value than a line in the record book, Brominski's fifth TD kept alive Syracuse's chances of a major bowl berth. In the perfect Brominski script, it would be the Rose Bowl in certain circumstances open to other than Pac-10 and Big 10 teams for the first time in a half-century. The only New York team to spend New Year's Day in Pasadena was the 1933 Columbia team, which stunned Stanford.

Columbia's right halfback, one of four Lions playing all 60 was Ed Brominski, a 175-pound junior from the Wilkes-Barre suburb of Swoy-ersville. Pa. Stephen Brominski's grandfather didn't figure in Columbia's seven points, but newspaper accounts confirm that he had a definite hand in Stanford's zero. Brominski recovered two-time All-American Bobby Grayson's fumble at the Columbia 1-yard line just before halftime. Late in the game, he intercepted a Grayson pass.

Three decades later, John Brominski got only as far as the Columbia freshman squad, he says, a hefty lineman from another Wilkes-Barre suburb where his father was his Dallas High coach. Doesn't genetic research find dominant characteristics sometimes skipping from grandparent to grandchild? Fox is sports editor emeritus of the Press Sun-Bulletin. for Stephen, yes, but I leave that other stuff for others," he said. "My father was both emotional and undemonstrative; I'm the same way." Stephen didn't play his high school sports at Whitney Point or at Chenango Forks, the school district in which John Brominski formerly resided. After his parents' divorce, Stephen remained in Wilkes-Barre, with his mother, Judith, and three siblings.

Wilkes-Barre's Meyers High has a hefty football tradition. The swift Ismail brothers, Raghib and Qadry, are 1980s graduates of Meyers. When Brominski took over tight end as a 1992 sophomore, teammates included Phil Ostrowski, today a San Francisco 49ers offensive guard and former Penn State captain. Brominski became a two-time all-state defensive end, and ranked at the top of Blue Chip recruiting magazine's tight-end chart. Not until a fourth year in college has he risen as high on the Syracuse tight-end ladder as the magazine forecast.

was third-string in '96 and '97, without a reception in his 16 games, some as a center. This season, he got going in a hurry. His first SU reception was for the Orange's first 1998 touchdown, on opening day against Tennessee with John Brominski standing behind the same end zone. He caught another at N.C. State, another against Cincinnati.

With two against Virginia Tech, he tied the SU record of five touchdowns in a season by a tight end. Chris Gedney, a unanimous All-American and third-round Chicago John Brominski is a Whitney Point merchant who does his football watching from behind the end zones. He says he always has. As a boy, he had tagged along wi th his father, a high school coach, on scouting missions. His dad wanted no part of seats on the 50.

"He had to be behind the end zone to tell what the lines spacings are," Brominski explains. It's remained his own choice of vantage point ever since. As midnight neared a week ago Saturday at the Carrier Dome, there Brominski stood on the lower concourse at the east end of the Dome, his complimentary seat deserted hours earlier. Four seconds remained, Virginia Tech's 26-22 lead all but final. In the Tech time out that had just ended, the Hokies' defenders were reminded to watch for one play Donovan McNabb's throw-back to his tight end at the opposite side.

"We'd worked on it time after time in practice because we know that it's their favorite play," Tech coach Frank Beamer was quoted afterward. Now the ball was in the air and in the air, and in the air, almost from right sideline to left sideline, the clock 0:00 throughout. And now the ball was in the hands of the big junior Syracuse tight end in the end zone, No. 87, Stephen Brominski. "It's normally a 3- to 5-yard route, (but in the time out) I told Don if he came to me, I'd be in the end zone (13 yards ahead)," No.

Zereoue rushed for 143 yards and two touchdowns, and Marc Bulger threw for two more scores as West Virginia beat Boston College 35- 10 Saturday. Cloud, a senior, had 179 yards on 28 carries.

Zereoue had 137 yards rushing before halftime, including a season-high 101 yards in the first quarter. Zereoue went 30 yards up the middle for his second score just over two minutes before halftime for a 19-7 lead. Cloud, who broke Zereoue's year-old Big East season rushing record last week at Pittsburgh, finished the season with 1,726 yards. His 3,597 career yards surpassed Troy Stradford (3,504 yards from 1982-86) as Boston College's career rushing leader.

Cloud took over the Big East career rushing lead from Zereoue, a junior, who has 3,569 yards with one game left Friday at Pittsburgh. 87's father react? Most obviously, John Brominski didn't react by joining the tidal wave that immediately sprinted toward and, if successful, onto No. 87 something approaching 16 tons of teammates plus a few thousand trespassing non-combatants. The Dome never has witnessed the equal: Such a frenzied pileup that the 6-foot-5, 258-pound touchdown-maker said later, "I thought that I was dead." As for John Brominski's display of proud-papa triumph? John isn't an outwardly excitable man. The Bombers pounced on Hartwick early, scoring 24 points in the first half of their 40-6 triumph in the Eastern College Athletic Conference Northwest Championship at Butterfield Stadium in Ithaca. Despite their record and a tough schedule that included two victories over Division II teams, the Bombers (9-2) were not among the four teams selected to represent the East Region in the Division III tournament. The College of New Jersey (8-2), which fell to Ithaca 18-16 earlier in the season, earned a bid even after a 21-18 loss two weeks ago to Brockport State, 1-7 at the time. "You want to play for a national championship and this doesn't give you that opportunity," Ithaca coach Mike Welch said earlier in the week. We're everything you want, nothing like you'd expect.
