"Then I got to college and hit .311 my freshman year. "That's when I realized that I had the potential to do something. "I think I improved a lot this year by learning to hit the ball to the opposite field." By MARK EDWARDS Advertiser Sports Writer Eight years ago, Lou Thornton of Hope Hull J)egan his professional baseball career in Kings-port, Tenn. the same place his younger brother Eric will begin his Monday.

Eric Thornton, 21, Faulkner's left-handed center fielder for the last three years, was drafted Wednesday by the New York Mets on the final day of the June major league draft. He signed with the organization Thursday night. "I didn't find out until (Thursday) morning," Thornton said. "The scout (Joe Mason) didn't find out until midnight, so he didn't call me until this morning. I'm very excited and I'm glad to finally find out." Kingsport is the defending champion in the Appalachian League, a rookie league.

Thornton said he has been told that he will play center field for Kings-port. Lou Thornton, 26, spent 1981 and '82 with Kingsport. He was in the Mets' organization until 1984 when he was picked up by the Toronto Blue Jays. Earlier this year, he was traded to Pittsburgh, who released him about two weeks ago. Then the Mets picked him up and sent him to Tidewater, to their Class AAA team.

"It's nice to know that we'll both be in the same organiza tion," Eric Thornton said. Thornton batted .431 this past season for Faulkner and was successful on 31 of 35 stolen base attempts, setting a school record. He was named Faulkner's Most Valuable Offensive Player. He said it wasn't until he enjoyed success at Faulkner that he believed a professional baseball career was possible. mmm mm -i The Intelligent Choice 1569 Cucui! City S'O'ei.

Peters, a key figure in the investigation into Rose's alleged gambling, said it was a "cheap shot" to accuse him of making unfair demands in exchange for the chance to cross-examine him this Saturday. The former restaurateur said he had consented to be interviewed by Rose's attorneys "to try to be fair, to be fair to Pete." Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Brichler has said that Peters told authorities he accepted bets on behalf of Rose that perhaps exceeded $1 million over a two-year span.

Rose's attorneys said in a release Thursday that they wouldn't accept a stipulation that called for a $25,000 penalty if information Peters gave them showed up in the news media. Peters' attorneys countered that Rose's attorneys had agreed to the conditions on Tuesday without complaint. Peters, who is awaiting sentencing on drug and income tax charges, said at a news conference Thursday that he has no hard feelings toward Rose. But he turned one of Rose's favorite lines against him. "I'm guilty of one thing, I guess, and that's picking my friends," Peters said, parroting one of Rose's favorite lines during the investigation.

Rose distanced himself from Peters following the Reds' 3-2 victory over San Francisco, saying he's no friend of Peters. "By the way, he is right," Rose told The Associated Press. "He did pick a bad selection of friends, but I'm not one of them never was, never will be." Rose is the subject of investigations by baseball Commissioner A. Bartlett Giamatti and a federal grand jury in Cincinnati. If he's found to have bet on baseball games, Giamatti could suspend Rose for a year; betting on Reds games could bring a lifetime ban.

Butcher stole second and scored when McDonald fielded Craig Newkirk's bunt and threw wildly past third. Texas made it 6-0 in the second on Butcher's two-out, two-run double and added another run in the third on Steve Be-thea's two-out solo homer. LSU got three runs in the bottom of the third.
